President Barack Obama, seeking to calm unrest over the police killing of an unarmed black teenager in Missouri, declared Thursday that there is no excuse for violence against police or for excessive force by officers against protesters.
The president spoke after four nights of protests in Ferguson, Missouri, over the death of Michael Brown, 18. Police on Wednesday fired tear gas against protesters and arrested 16 people, including two reporters. Police said that rocks and a Molotov cocktail were thrown at officers.
“There is never an excuse for violence against police, or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting,” he said. “There’s also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protesters, or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.”
He also said that police should not be “bullying” or arresting journalists who are trying to do their jobs.

Steve King is a real piece...of work. I would be ashamed to have him as my elected official. I also wouldn't want to get within miles of his district, must be full of ignorant racists.
i don't think when a man is being criminally treated, that some criminal has the right to tell that man what tactics to use to get the criminal off his back.

"Continental origin"... F*cking moron...
Seemed like he wasn't sure how to word it. It was awkward, but it shouldn't be noteworthy.
Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) called on President Barack Obama to declare martial law in Ferguson, Missouri, where police and protesters have clashed after a police officer shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown on Saturday.
"It is very sad and unbelievable. It's unreal to see what the police is doing there," Lewis said in a Thursday interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. "First of all, Ferguson, Missouri, is part of the United States of America. People have a right to protest. They have a right to dissent. They have a right to march in an orderly, peaceful, nonviolent fashion. And the press has a right to cover it."
Lewis, whose skull was fractured by police during the 1965 march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, told Mitchell that the situation in Ferguson reminds him of "the '40s, the '50s, the '60s," pointing to the dearth of black officers on the St. Louis suburb's police force.
"So my own feeling, right now, is that President Obama should use the authority of his office to declare martial law. Federalize the Missouri National Guard to protect people as they protest," Lewis said. "And people should come together. Reasonable elected officials, community leaders and address what is happening there."
He continued: "If we fail to act, the fires of frustration and discontent will continue to burn, not only in Ferguson, Missouri, but all across America."

What a fucking idiot.
It's already militarized in the sense of equipment, and the people are mad that the PD, not "the establishment." Like a lot of publications have mentioned, this is very much a white vs. black situation, reminiscent of the Civil Rights. Bringing in a more disciplined (and racially diverse) group might make things better.

I think he knows a bit more about dealing with over zealous officers than you do... But yeah, sure, we'll go with your enlightened perspective of this national hero being a 'fucking idiot'...
I mean it's not like the police are arresting innocent reporters.... Oh wait they are...
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Thursday in a Time magazine op-ed that the events in Ferguson, Mo., meant that it was time to "de-militarize the police."
"There is a legitimate role for the police to keep the peace, but there should be a difference between a police response and a military response," he wrote. "The images and scenes we continue to see in Ferguson resemble war more than traditional police action."
Paul blamed in part the federal programs that allow local law enforcement to obtain military-style equipment.
"Not surprisingly, big government has been at the heart of the problem. Washington has incentivized the militarization of local police precincts by using federal dollars to help municipal governments build what are essentially small armies," he wrote, "where police departments compete to acquire military gear that goes far beyond what most of Americans think of as law enforcement."
"The militarization of our law enforcement is due to an unprecedented expansion of government power in this realm," he continued. "It is one thing for federal officials to work in conjunction with local authorities to reduce or solve crime. It is quite another for them to subsidize it."
He also touched on the racial component of the Ferguson protests, sparked when unarmed African-American teen Michael Brown was shot by police. The police force in Ferguson is almost entirely white, while the community is two-thirds black.
Given these developments, it is almost impossible for many Americans not to feel like their government is targeting them," Paul wrote. "Given the racial disparities in our criminal justice system, it is impossible for African-Americans not to feel like their government is particularly targeting them."
Sorry but people are just way too PC. What is and isn't PC is in constant flux and it make speech just too difficult when you have to constantly pause and wonder if what you're saying can sound insensitive or not.

This isn't a situation where local civil authorities are systematically discriminating against blacks. This is a situation where a cop MAY have done something incredibly stupid or even criminal, and now blacks are using it as an excuse to go apeshit with rioting, looting, and all sorts of other bullshit. Federal intervention is not warranted. As for the local police, I'll be the first to say that is fucked up how they are essentially armed like a military force. Really, my point was that we don't want MORE soldiers handling domestic issues.
Blacks kill white people at a much higher rate than the reverse and for black victims almost 90% of the offenders are black themselves. So who cares? If this policeman is a murderer then so be it, no need to start acting like this is the 1800s.
3127 were white offenders 2694 were black offenders
Yet blacks make up less than 10% of the population. Oh my god, we should start reversing our entire livelihoods and get all lame. I get that this is a policeman and things are different, but judging from theguardian it would appear unarmed blacks are being killed by the dozens every day by the great evil white people. Stupid shit to get riled up at. People are people. Race card is lamer than farcry 3s multiplayer

This comment shows you know nothing about the actual situation. This incident was a flash-point for something that has brewing for a long time in Ferguson.
Some are committing various criminal acts but the vast majority are peaceful protesters.

This is a situation where the racial make-up of the police force is so different from the community they serve that it amplifies any feeling of racial discrimination of what happened to Brown, even if that feeling may be misplaced.
Also, watch yourself:
blacks are using it as an excuse to go apeshit with rioting, looting, and all sorts of other bullshit.
That's a statement that seems quite loaded with racism.

Don't be dumb. Over policing of black communities specifically in Missouri goes way beyond this one incident. Heres the data as collected by the States Attorney General s office. http://ago.mo.gov/VehicleStops/

Wrong. This is a situation where local authorities are systematically targeting blacks. Heres the states own data on racial profiling. http://ago.mo.gov/VehicleStops/
