It depends on the definition of prime numbers. For example, you can define them by how you did, which would make 1 a prime number. But you can also define them by: a number is a prime number if and only if it is divisible by exactly 2 numbers. Then 1 isn't a prime number, because it is (the only number that is ) only divisible by one number, by 1. The reason why math uses the second definition and not the one you have given, is that there are a few theorems about prime numbers which only work for prime numbers =/= 1, as the unity number one has various special properties which other numbers don't have. | ||
