I hate unsubstantiated claims, but you can't ask for 5 academic papers every time someone says something. It's not like he said "oh I saw that issue on Vietnamese TV news too!"
.

So it's up to 2-10 sample size now? Very good. Try 10,000 and the appropriate robustness tests and then I'll pay attention to your claims.

Can't forget a control sample either...

You clearly go to university and are very proud of this fact.

I guess anyone that doesn't know how to find or reference academic papers doesn't have an opinion worth hearing anymore? And of course everything in this world that exists outside of quantified and categorised data musn't be worth talking about.

Ugh, now I feel bad for adopting the same snotty tone you were using.

Just trying to say the tone of your messages is very elitist and you can't just demand everyone who wishes to talk about something needs to reference their claims as if it's a university paper. This isn't an academic forum so hoping for that would be a bit silly.

Nothing against you personally just I think you're posts were a little off.

Good day!

He/she made factual claims without providing evidence for them upon request. His beliefs on this matter were formed from a sample size of 1 individual, and perhaps news reports. This is how racist people think. They draw inference from crappy data. I was just pointing out that he was thinking about this badly.

I know you are very proud that you just had your first statistics course or something, but you don't actually have to back up every claim you make in a casual discussion. The fact that Vietnam has problems with foreign sex-tourism is pretty common knowledge. Common knowledge does not have to backed up in an academic setting, let alone an internet message board.

The common knowledge defence. lmao.

its called social commentary. There wont be a scientific research on every fucking topic, especially if its rather subjective. If you get out every once in a while, you might make certain observations that wont have "5 academic research" to back it up. Think about the claim that alot of people buy apple products to be hip. There wont be research for this kind of thing, but that doesnt mean it wont resonate with some people. God pseudointellectual nonsense gets on my nerves.

Ahh, yes, the common knowledge defence... just like the one you used to support your statement on the IQ of those who have a high pigment content in their skin. Telling someone that something is "commonly known, just google it" is...

EXACTLY THE SAME THING YOU'RE MOCKING HIM FOR USING.

Troll.

Apologies to the rest of the universe, but I cannot possibly read this without responding or having an aneurysm. Or both.

How is pointing him in the direction of scientific, published evidence, an appeal to common knowledge? What are you talking about?

There are gold diggers in every country, not just korea. I don't really see it as a problem because thats what those women are choosing to do. It may often be a dumb choice, but it is their choice. Theyll either wise up, get lucky and find the right guy or not.

And before we go feeling too sorry for them I would spare a moments thought for those individuals who do wind up hitched to a partner whose chief interest in them is material.

Edit: also, lol at that guy who demanded 5 scholarly sources. Like anyone is going to be able to get a significant sample of materialist women to participate in a study that demeans them, or take a bunch of mens' word on the subject. love to the see the objective standards you all would devise for a study on gold diggery.
What is best? To crush the Zerg, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the Protoss.

"As the guy in the video said, they tend to be quite rush in developing relationship with foreigners so it can lead to several issues such as HIV or scam which is the opposite with having relationship with Korean guys in which they have more time to figure whether the relationship is worth it."

Is a claim about the behaviour of a population of people. I merely asked for a piece of evidence in support of it. None was provided.

Sorry but surveying 1 to 2 people does not count. News reports don't count.

Learn how to think.

Even professors of statistics don't argue like that. We get it, one personal incident does not back up a blanket statement. No one said it does and no one here thinks that.

Tension with American occupation in Asian countries however is a very commonly discussed topic. I can only speak for Korea but the problems in Itaewon and recently Hongdae concerning anti-foreign sentiment are well known. It IS common knowledge for people who actually live there. Itaewon is infamous in Korea for being a foreigner hotspot and has strong connotations of being populated with shady white people. It's like you're asking for 5 academic papers or a 10k sample size on the fact that Detroit is dangerous as fuck.

If everyone says something and you're ignorant, go research it on your own and tell us what you find out. If you know we're right and just being a prick, well, I can't help you. Maybe consider signing up for an ethnic studies class next semester along with Stat 2.

I was just saying you can't ask for 5 academic papers every time you make a claim. You want me to go through your post history to see if you attach 5 academic papers every time you claim something ?
And don't use that condescending tone on me please.

You think something is true because you experience it in 2-5 sample size. This is bad thinking. So here N is 3, N-1 is 2, your standard error is massive and you can't make inference from any z/t that you estimate. Is that better?

I checked your history post and you seems to be obsessed with "scientific" arguments, yet non of your post really contain any "academic papers". "E.g. Black people have less IQ on average" <-- LOL WHAT?
Seriously though, get those textbook out of your head and start using common knowledge.

Except that he's completely right, both in his point in this thread, and that blacks have a lower IQ percentile on average (although the cause is disputed). Go ahead and look it up. I'm sure he would have provided studies to back up his claim had you asked for it. But go ahead and laugh at him. Just because something sounds plausible (like the shit in this thread) doesn't make it true, likewise, just because something sounds unlikely or racist (blacks having a lower IQ percentile on average) doesn't make it wrong. And THAT is why he is asking for research data.

I can look at published statistics which verify that that is factual (murder rate in Detroit, jail rate, whatever). I don't need an academic publication, just something other than "common knowledge", news reports, or "my friend experienced X". These can too easily be wrong. I've learnt that most people are complete morons: what is it like 90% of people in the U.S. believe in the Bible? I don't believe in "common knowledge" or 1 sample sizes for a reason... people are fucking stupid.

Also remember that it was "common knowledge" in Germany that Jews were the reason for the depression. More evidence that large amounts of people can be completely idiotic and the reason why your appeals to common knowledge do not provide me with a good reason to believe your claim.

This no different from what happened when foreign men starting to come to my country on a larger scale several decades ago. This is what happens when you start internationalizing your country Korea, sad but true. And also dont forget that stupid girls gonna be stupid girls.

The problem isn't whether or not it's a real problem, the problem is how it's portrayed. The point is that when women are being loose and having unprotected sex with males they don't know, problems arise. The problem is that this program, and the debate, is focusing on the bad guys being foreigners, when it could just as well be koreans. The focus should be on having safe relationships, not on foreigners being dangerous.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnnnddddddd Godwin'd. Thread over, everybody go home. Nothing to see here.

Regardless, people are generally interested in dating foreigners EVERYWHERE. British guys find italian, romanian, french, even german girls "interesting" and ever so slightly "exotic" compared to born-n-bred english girls. I've heard more than a few times that japanese girls love foreign traits like blonde hair and above average height, and americans have a real thing for latinas from what I've seen.

While I've no doubt the video is really extreme (haven't taken the time to watch it yet), I don't think it merits some huge discussion on whether people rush into relationships with foreigners. From what I can tell people all over the world rush into relationships with foreigners. If I had to make a guess, I'd say maybe its down to two things - Seeming a little bit exotic, new, exciting, and secondly, because people are more socially forgiving when someone comes from another culture. They'll give and recieve more chances to do the wrong thing and that fosters greater communication later on as the dynamic is more open.

This is like nazi propaganda from WW2
I have lived in Korea 4 years and everything in this documentary has absolutely nothing to do with foreigners in korea or any other racist bullcrap.
Its so stupendously misinformed my head hurts. This is the kind of stupidity one might expect out of 4 corners or maybe CNN (not sure about american tv)
Really, why is real cheese so hard to come by in Korea? ^&^

Hilarious. A bunch of people defending the scientific method and holding up as their example a study on intelligent quotient, one of the least objective measurements ever, an inherently flawed attempt to quantify the mind and reduce human potential to a number. Might as well link those old 19th scholarly works about the cranial sizes of the various races.

The fact that you link a bunch of numbers with no coherent interpretation or analysis that takes into account the social and historical factors contributing to results shows just how blinded this obsession with data has made you to the actual truth. In the absence of studies, a condition necessarily imposed the complexity and difficulty in studying this particular issue, a truly wise man would settle for what data he could get, in this case, anecdotes. I make no defense of the video, but let's not dismiss every person who comes in here with first or secondhand knowledge, when scholarship is unlikely to provide anything better.

Demanding academic studies when you KNOW that any that exist, if they even do exist, are likely to be heavily flawed is the opposite of smart. It's rigid thinking at best, disingenuous at worst.
What is best? To crush the Zerg, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the Protoss.

To give all foriegners who live there a single stereotype is almost normal. People on smaller levels put people into groups all the time. Yes it is indeed a bit outlandish for MBC to have something like this on there but at the same time it is only filler the piques the human mind into social melodrama that the people can come together about. In the end i would
have to say that this is like fox news. Itll blow over after a couple of months if they dont update on it.

Also remember that it was "common knowledge" in Germany that Jews were the reason for the depression. More evidence that large amounts of people can be completely idiotic and the reason why your appeals to common knowledge do not provide me with a good reason to believe your claim.

Again, common knowledge does not mean it's necessarily correct. Yes, you're right. I think you missed my point. There's a lot more to social interaction than being "right". If a lot of people are being agreeing on something that you think is false, maybe you can help us out and go find evidence of the contrary. Don't care about it enough to do that? Then don't post in this thread.

You think you're so much better than everyone else? A lot of people are probably less educated and more ignorant than you. You said you were top 3% in your university? Well that's 97% of people you out performed at your school. Is that what you want? For us to suddenly acknowledge how smart you are? Do you really have to join this thread purely to point out other people's logical fallacies or lack of data? Do you even remotely care at all about the issues at hand? I slightly modified this chart a fellow TL'er made about you a while back

Do you want to be known as "that one asshole who comes into random threads and asks for large quantities of academic research on every claim made in the thread?" Because that's where you're headed. Nothing you said was wrong, it's only how you said it that makes it so stupid. If you want to come off as intelligent, you're doing an awful job.
