Think twice before hitting post; this thread will be moderated for idiocy and useless posts. Consider this a warning. |
its just a ladder game It is just a ladder game, but its also a ladder game that was probably being streamed live to thousands of viewers. This isn't the first time he's used these choice words either. I watched his LoL stream a week ago when he used the same choice words to the other team while he had a little over 4k viewers.

This community will never grow if we don't call this kind of garbage out. So you saying Destiny are killing Esports!!? Nope. I'm saying racial/ethnic/homophobic slurs will cause issues with the growth of the community, regardless of who says them. What about a useless post meant to defame a public figure while hidding its true purpose under a political correct theme. I think that would be a greater threat to the community? So if you guys keep up with this we might get to a point where people are so affraid of saying anything becuase of the horde of angry jealous dramaqueens who would rather want to create drama instead of watching starcraft games. You mean to say people might be held accountable for what they say like other public figures?
Ahh so if you are a public figure you not alowed to be human and do mistakes. Gotcha.
Seriously im so sick of this community. You are graving for drama 24/7 and if there isnt some kind of drama hell we will just create something.

Every grown-up and sensible person agrees that Destiny's behavior is just plain stupid and immature. As we've seen with the Orb incident, it is - in the end - the community that decides whether players actually receive punishments for this kind of misbehavior. In contrast to Orb though, Destiny seems to have a plethora of pubescent fanboys that leap to his defense everytime somebody brings up the topic. And it's hard for a site such as teamliquid to punish him by for example removing the feature status of his stream, because it inevitably leads to a fanboy shitstorm.
I personally would like to see that Quantic makes clear that they do not endorse this kind of behavior. But as said, they won't act until enough people complain.

This community will never grow if we don't call this kind of garbage out. Some of us actually live abroad in a foreign land with many races in a super enclosed community and find slurs used in a manner like this quite trivial. "the rest of us" do not all agree with you. I live in an area that is fairly diverse. Racial slurs are a huge deal. I'm curious as to where you live if you say that's not the case there. I live on an army base near many other bases in Japan. I grew up with many kids that I known throughout the years of all races and in turn we see each other as people. I know its something that many people are not going to have the chance of doing but because of it racism is not a big deal. I'm aware that 99% of the people in Japan are Japanese but I am around quite a bit of the 1 %. If everyone had this view of everyone just being people and taking racial slurs lightly things would be much better around the world. Its taking them seriously that causes death and turmoil. Yes, a black guy should ignore the group of morons calling him a racial slur and THATS what will stop him from getting beat up and/or killed. I never knew that racism was the fault of the person it was directed at and if they would only grow thicker skin it would stop the issue. You obviously did not read my other comments. I said racism IS A PROBLEM. The fact is, the way its being conveyed now is NOT. The reason why racism will never be fixed is because we make big fucking deals about it when shit like this happens. No, we should make a big fucking deal out of it when racism actually infringes on harming another human being. Taking racism seriously exponentially expands the ideals to be world wide in turn making the problem worse. If your so god dam passionate about the problem why don't you start a activist group and fight REAL racism. Instead you fight this trivial problem on the internet so you can pat yourself on the back afterwards thinking you made a difference. Free speech is based on the marketplace of ideas, and societies responsibility to discern the good from the terrible. I'm just trying to do my part to point out how ridiculous it is to try and condone this kind of language.

The stark contrast between this thread and the Orb thread is rather amazing. Both are "community figures" who profit off of pushing their personality. In fact, a majority of Destiny's success is based off of his personality, not his results in tournament play.

There seem to be a lot of responses about how much each individual doesn't care about what Destiny said. What makes something offensive or hurtful is not whether or not it hurts you individually. It hurts others. I know the internet has made us desensitized to those things, but this is a community; a real community of people who deserve respect. What he said offends me.
Furthermore I would never have wanted to share my eSports passion with my friends if I was worried they would be exposed to this. It would offend them, and reflect poorly on this community. It DOES reflect poorly on this community. Thinking that everyone should "grow up" and expect, condone, or passively endorse this kind of behavior is completely backwards.
People say a lot of stupid shit on the internet, it's true. That doesn't mean it has to spill over into our budding eSports economy. You talk about getting mad at those wanting to tell sponsors? Get mad at Destiny for putting us in this position! I support eSports NOT RACIAL SLURS. Blame the person responsible, and expect responsibility to be taken. That is how you act "grown up".
|
People always say, "grow up" to things they don't like, and both sides always say it. "Destiny needs to grow up." Or, "Grow up, stop getting offended. You won't make it through life like this." It's funny that both sides see the other side as immature. "Immature" and "grow up" just means "I don't like this."

Absolutely people are allowed to make mistakes. However we are allowed to call people out on their mistakes...and in this situation where Destiny continues to do it over and over again we will continue to point it out.

Hard to respect Quantic if they're happy to sign players that throw racial slurs around whenever they see korean characters.

A repeated pattern of behavior he's openly defended and admitted to is not a "mistake." It's an intentional action.

There is a huge difference :S

Now who of you has used their stream to hold a charity event for Doctors Without Borders, an organisation known to help people in... you know, foreign countries? GUY MUST BE A RACIST I trust you'll replace the money he's made for children in need with your own once you're done getting him fired and shit. Take care of your own business ffs. If you have a problem with what he says on his stream, don't watch it.

Thank you for quoting this, I missed it in this thread.

Someone needs to make a list of approved words, thoughts, and actions and everybody should only be allowed to do those things.
I'LL go make the list, brb.

The way he said gook sounded like it was used in a replaceable fashion. I dont think that constitutes racism as much as it does poor vocabulary.
Seriously guys.
