Imagine a job where you get paid all day to think of absurd shit to say. Must be like paradise. As an european I don't get much exposure to LBJ, but whenever I hear him talking he sounds like a very reasonable and nice guy. Yeah, I saw the Decision and the show in south beach, and he probably did not behave very smart in both circumstances, but well, it doesn't really matter. And ever since Dirk won his ring, the NBA is a happy place for me. OKC has lots of time to win a ring, and next year this thread has 50 pages less LBJ-nonsense in it, so everything is good.

That's more than people can say about nearly any superstar out there. Maybe it's the reason why people focus so much on his "failings" in the basketballworld. There is nothing to report about his private life. Obviously i wanted Dallas to win last year but i think this year the heat just deserved it and Lebron deserved it. he made up a lot with his attitude this year.

There's nothing wrong with coming together to play with your friends on a team that gives you the best chance to win. All this "MJ and Kobe wouldn't have done it" is bullshit to me because well, those players were given the necessary help. They were lucky to have teammates like Scottie and Shaq. LeBron had to seek it out for himself, especially when his best teammate was fucking Mo Williams for seven years. I don't remember people shitting on Boston Celtics for doing pretty much the same thing and earning instant gratification in the same year. If anything, people were mostly annoyed by the infamous "Decision" and the proceeding celebrations afterwards. I was irked, too. And LeBron's apparent insecurities and immaturity. Personally, though, all this stuff feels irrelevant to me at this point. He's a worthy champion, the greatest player of his generation, and making history as we know it. He's not cheating on his wife, driving around drunk and he shows respectful manner on the court. The truth is that he's a nice guy who made a few fuck-ups and they exploded out of proportion, and he saw his own failure last year at the biggest stage because of these reasons (do not forget that he was otherworldly prior to the Dallas series) - crumbling under this immense pressure that has been on his shoulders since high school. Haters gonna hate, people are entitled to their opinions, all I know is it's undeserved. Congrats to the Heat and LeBron, hard-worked, well-deserved victory. As for the Thunder, I don't feel so bad; they will be back.

This quote is an excellent summary of my feelings on the matter: On June 12 2012 19:21 TieN.nS) wrote: For some reason people object to the idea of players determining their own destinies. If players get screwed by the front office, "it's just business." Personally I think that what Miami did in deciding to team up was great, for a variety of reasons: they decided to come together and sacrifice individual glory with the goal of winning; they all took less money in order to do so; the (potential) level of play with LeBron and Wade teaming together has to be appreciated by any real basketball fan -- there is NO prettier play in basketball than a LeBron/Wade fast break. When Tim Duncan and Peyton Manning took pay cuts to help their respective teams out, they're celebrated for being team players and model citizens; why should it be different for these guys? And yeah, "The Decision" was a terrible idea on LeBron's part, but he was a free agent and simply exercised his right to choose where he wanted to play. Peyton Manning got hurt and the Colts dumped him like he meant nothing to their franchise, and this is pretty much standard practice in sports. Why should a professional athlete ever feel beholden to his team when this is the case? As far as the idea that teaming up with a competitor is "anticompetitive," what do you call repeatedly tanking for draft picks for nearly half a decade, as the Thunder did? And should a team break up when they get too much talent, in the name of competition? After this season, win or lose, the Thunder will likely lose either Serge Ibaka or James Harden to free agency because they just won't be able to afford both while paying Durant and Westbrook max contracts. You can't be mad at them if they leave, because they're young players and it's perfectly within their rights to go out and get theirs while they can. But this exciting young team with so much potential will be broken up as a result, which no true basketball fan can truly be happy about. What great joy would it be to see Ibaka and Harden take less money in order to keep the team together! Yet, what is so different about that to make the media paint these guys as heroes and LeBron, Wade, and Bosh as pariahs? The Heat should be celebrated for their unselfishness in pursuit of what, ideally, should be every professional athlete's motivation: winning. These guys are the antithesis of every selfish salary cap hogging team-killing cancer that everyone rightfully should hate, yet instead of being appreciated they're getting killed for it. It's ridiculous.

People are so quick to praise Lebron for taking less moeny on his contract, but it's not like the guy is strapped for cash. When he signed his contract with the Cavs it was his THIRD highest paying contract (behind Nike and Coke sponsorships), so forgive me if I don't find it in myself to praise him for taking a few less millions in NBA contract that's more than made up for endorsements. I think, at least personally, what irks me the most is the route their decision took the NBA. People talk about Shaq and Kobe, but remember that just a few years prior the Pistons laid out a blueprint for winning with team basketball. They had relatively no stars on their team, but won with a talented all around roster and excellent coaching. Lebron didn't leave a team that was shit, he left a team that won more than 60 games twice. He was on the cusp of reaching a finals with a team built around him, that really showed a lot of potential. Bosh and LBJ were both being courted by multiple teams, and they had an opportunity to really bring an air of competitiveness to the Eastern Conference. I can understand wanting to group together to win, and when you play a sport that has 5 players playing the majority of the minutes of the game, getting 3 stars on the court together is likely to yield excellent results. Ultimately though, this is the guy who anointed himself The King. Calling yourself The King implies that you are at the top of the hierarchy, or more specifically, you are The Cheese. To then walk away from a team that had done pretty much anything it could to help you win to go join two other stars just screams to me "oh shit, maybe I'm not that good." Since the Heat formed their superteam, the majority of the NBA has shifted from having one or two star and building around them to having teams of demigod players and role guys, look to the Knicks for a prime example. I can't blame OKC for tanking multiple years, as in what is now the current NBA without multiple superstars you're not really going to get anywhere. Look at the Spurs or Mavericks this year. This trend didn't begin with the Heat (it did with the Celtics in my estimation), but it really took the league by storm, and now the majority of big stars aren't looking for a city and team to call their own, but rather finding other players they can combine with to win. The league got much more stagnant, and for me removed a lot of the joy in the season, knowing it ultimately will always be 2 or 3 teams in the East that matter. And for the record, I don't think anyone should give credit to professional athletes that don't get into trouble. I support criticism of those that do, but you're being given the keys to the city and more money than most people see in a lifetime. If you can't handle that, you deserve criticism. If you can, you're merely living to the standard you're being paid for. No more, no less. I choose to see the money donated from The Decision not as sign of "what a nice guy, he's raising money for kids" but rather an attempt at saving PR face from an otherwise unforgivably arrogant decision. I don't give him credit for how he went about free agency, look at guys like Peyton Manning for sign of true class. He didn't create a circus, he accepted being shit on by Indianapolis like a gentleman, and went about his business professionally. If LBJ wanted to actually handle that with some amount of class, he should've said something to the Cleveland management. To make your city (which deemed you the prodigal son) wait for that live press conference to know you're abandoning them (fair or not, that's how Cleveland viewed it) was pretty low. Had he made it clear he wasn't returning, I'd probably be less disgusted by how that went down. On June 23 2012 01:19 TwoToneTerran wrote: also lol holy shit the Drew Brees analogy slipped by me. I am a Saints fan, and have been for my entire goddamn life. Drew Brees is holding the franchise hostage to get the maximum amount of money he can squeeze out of the team. He is a symbol of the team but he's not Mr. Lovey Dovey New Orleans and he is most CERTAINLY one of the most arrogant pricks in football. He's a class act otherwise but this dude absolutely believes he's the best quarterback in the league and should get paid as much or better than everyone of Manning, Rodgers and Brady. Doesn't get more arrogant than that. + Show Spoiler + I find it ironic that Brees is being lambasted for holding hostage the same organization that he was previously praised for raising from the ashes. In the NFL thread there were constant posts about Brees being the best QB in the NFL, how he raised his team from the 'Aints to the Saints again, and how he was a savior for a previously pitiful franchise. You wanted me (and others in that thread) to believe that Brees was on the level of the Mannings and the Bradys, yet now when he expects to be paid as such he's the bad guy? There's an interesting article on the NFL.com site about Percy Harvin's issues in Minnesota, where they mention how the only real move for a player that wants more money is to hold-out of camp to show you mean business. I actually agreed with you after the year about Brees, and I agree he deserved more credit. The guy finally won a championship, raised his game to unreal levels, and his organization has brought a taint to his championship with their bountygate shenanigans. I don't blame him for what can come off like holding a grudge (though I don't think that's what he's doing- and the Saints should open the checkbook) To relate this back to the NBA and topic, it's great for LBJ to win his championship. He's a tremendous athlete, and considering how he's taken the league by storm for a decade now, it would be unfortunate to see him never get it done. I've always felt bad for Dan Marino, and though I don't really care for Lebron, as a professional athlete you always want them to reach their goals. However, after he left Cleveland to join the SuperFriends, I'm don't think I'm ever going to consider him in that true circle of the greatest elites, as his leaving Cleveland for Miami reaffirmed to me that even he didn't think he was good enough to carry a team to win.

1. Lebron James was everywhere. Not in the sense that he was where the ball was, but he was everywhere all the time. This was amazing. On one defensive play in the 3rd, he contained 3 Thunder players. It was ridiculous. He was on the block, he was on the wing, he stormed baseline and right through the paint. It was disturbing to watch. Simmons called him Bird 2.0? I think that's almost not good enough. He was like...a Garnett, Chris Webber, Magic Johnson mega hybrid. 2. I think Dwyane Wade should take 6 months off. He's Dwyane Wade so he can still get to the rim. But he can't really finish in traffic. I'm not sure what it is, he can still step, he can still get up but when he's contested at the rim, he can't finish. Because I love him so, I think I'm gonna just say he needs some time off. 3. I love Russ Westbrook. I called him a Gundam a few dozen pages back, and that's what he is. He's Wade 2.0 without the pedigree. He's Buck from Call of the Wild. He plays like he's on a Magic Carpet. I don't think he needs to "mature." He just needs to smooth out the stroke and improve his court vision some. Great player, great character in the NBA narrative. I hope he never changes. 4. If I could wax poetic for a bit: Chris Bosh will never get the cred that he deserves for that game. While Lebron James is everywhere all the time, Chris Bosh is where he needs to be when he needs to be there. Some writer called him "noble." I like this adjective, he was reliable and steadfast. Even when Chalmers tried to get him that alleyoop from 34 feet, it was like the basketball gods struck him down for trying to be a showman: the pass was 3 inches too high. 2 plays later? Chris Bosh is on the floor having poked a pass to Wade and from the floor, he watches D-Wade Euro-step his way to a gorgeous finish at the basket. NARRATIVE. 5. I don't think Scottie Brooks is a great coach. I think his roster is WAY better than he is. 6. That Fisher flagrant was TOTALLY a flagrant. No, you can not tackle a player in the NBA. And no, putting your hands near your groin as you slide in the shoulder check someone doesn't make it a charge.

Don't get why you think this. Not too many of the Greats had to do it alone, just because he had The Decision and that huge celebration and such he can't get grouped in with the greats. Magic had Hakeem Bird had McHale and Parish Kobe had Shaq + Bynum/Gasol later Wade had Shaq Jordan had Pippen Allen, KG and Pierce came together to win. So, yeah. Just because they either were together by drafting or whatever they didn't do it alone.
