Hi, I am a 25 year old African American and I have been playing starcraft for a very long time. I played broodwar for nearly 10 years and hopped immediatly to sc2 when it came out. Throughout all the time I have played starcraft racism online has been something ive had to deal with and in sc2 it seems the number of racists has increased dramaticly.
This post is an extended hand to any other minorities who really love starcraft but want to try to avoid being harrassed by avoiding.
Through this post i would like to form a black list of players who are racists and use racial slurs online. They are making the online experience a regretable one for minorities and I find that the community as a whole is willing to ignore this problem for the most part.
Because noone with the power to act on the issue seems to be concerned id like this post to be a reference. When you see the names on this list avoid them and do not stoop to their level. I ask that any and all posts here are supported with a replay (or multiple replays) that show the player useing racial slurs and intending to insult minority players.
I hope that cleaning up B.net of racism is something that people can get behind. Please show your support.
Unfortunately this doesn't work. As there can be thousands of players with the same ID, with little to no way to prove/verify the offender. Use the report feature in game if you feel it's necessary.
Not sure if this is a joke thread, but I'll treat it like it isnt:
Most everyone is going to use racist language on video games, simply because the player-base is younger people. This coupled with anonymity, it's basically a recipe for bad language (and racist language). Writing a list of people who do it isn't really going to solve the problem. (Unless you find a big name using racist language or w/e, see orb). Just report them.
Oh god. Dude just ignore the comments and don't let it get to you, there are jerks on the internet and everyone has to deal with them. Everytime you give this attention you just make it more of a big deal than it really is. Don't waste your time on this.
On March 31 2012 02:28 Shinespark wrote: Why is the "black list" the bad list?
Because he's a.... wait.. I won't say anything. I rather ask: What constitutes as a racial slur? Who judges that? Are we also hunting evilz that use sexist or religious slurs?
And finally I ask: Can an admin please stop the witch hunt now? Where is this report button again?
So how would a blacklist on TL help with this issue in any way, shape or form? Realize that we're talking of a small niche audience of the game, and only a small % of those would actually contribute to or read that list. While I understand where you're coming from, you're completely delusional if you think this thing will have any effect (or work out in the first place).
I don't think black listing players and starting witch hunts will sure solve this problem. Not nearly everyone who plays even visits TL, so this seems rather pointless. Like others said the best you can do is report them in game.
Being 25 years old, you should know what the internet is capable of. The best you can do is ignore them, report them, and let Blizzard handle the situation from there. No need to let trolls ruin your gameplay experience. Just play the game and have fun.

Public shaming doesn't work on a large gaming online field.

Shinespark wins the thread.
Honestly, just report them. What purpose would this serve? Someone drops an N Bomb in a match, so you run to TL.net to cross reference? "Oh shit, he IS a racist!"
This is not a very good idea. The internet isn't a courtroom where we can all judge people. Are you even sure people using racial slurs are racist? Don't try to make it your sacred duty to stamp out racism. Just enjoy the game and use the report function if you can't simply ignore it.
How can your experience be affected by what people say? If someone is being a racist douche bag just ignore him! Wasting your time on these people is the last thing you wanna do. They don't deserve any attention at all, quit getting butt hurt over something that doesn't matter and work on your macro or something!
You've noticed an increase of racial slurs recently? Guarenteed it's because of Orb, that guy added great number of racist terms to the average SC2 player's lexicon after his use of them made him imfamous
On March 31 2012 02:30 Gamegene wrote: Use the report function and then ignore.
How does your opponent know you're african american?
Regardless, black listing isn't going to do anything. Blizzard wouldn't even accept reports from TL's anti-hack initiative. And witch-hunts are equally tasteless imo.

Is OP serious?? How would online players know your race unless you tell them? I dont see how you would face more racism than anyone else. Just report them.
Besides, when someone is calling people niggers on the internet doesnt that say alot more about them than it does about black people?
Why do you have to deal with racism? How does your opponent knew you are a african american? are you opening every game with "gl hf, im black"? Just ignore people on the internet. Yesterday a guy wished me cancer and said if im not dying to cancer, hes going to hunt me and my family down with a knife. ^^ I didnt answered anything he wrote, owned him and then BM´d back by reporting him for reallife threat. I dont understand how anyone can take shit like this serious, you clearly need some self esteem.
I get called "Nazi" everytime I say that I'm german, all I do is ignore and report them. I think u should do it too, a "Blacklist" won't change anything.
How do they know you're black in the first place? Unless you tell them, any form of insult are aimed at you because you play zerg/terran/protoss/allin/cheese/turtle etc.

It's more like randoms on b.net will drop n-bombs for no reason and shit that he's talking about.
In any event, I agree with pretty much everyone in that they should just be reported. I mean, I don't need to cross-reference a name to know that they're racist.
I truly believe you are initiating something very important here. I have witnessed a lot of racial slurs thrown out on battle.net as well and it definitely elicits deeper issues about our society--one where people (in my opinion) cannot distinguish what words can be said jokingly or not (especially online since a lot of people are more careless with their words online).
Blizzard actually does a wonderful job banning or warning people who do say inappropriate things. Please report people on b.net.
Minority on a international community what a joke. But I guess you are stuck with the idea that the only minorities are those that aren't white while over 50% of the worlds population is Asian.
Playing online no one knows if you are white, black, asian or anything else so why do you take offense? Using racial slurs are only used as an general insult for most people. Some people take offense when you use religious terms as an insult and some racial. Just get thicker skin and ignore the players. (you can ignore them while ingame)
If I won a match every time I was called a "gook" I'd be in grandmaster league. If I won a match for every time I cared, I'd have 5 placement matches left.
Some things need to be made clear. This is not a war against racism on the internet. This is ment to be a reference for minority players who log into b.net when they get home from school or work and do not want to be bombarded by meaingless insults that sting deep. This is ment to be a tool for players so they can knowingly avoid contact with players who frequent the use of racial slurs. This is no witch hunt.
I understand your feelings, but personally I'd just ignore them. If you're really annoyed or offended, just report them. No use (imo) getting fired up by people that are not worth it.
that is a bit ridiculous i think its better to ignore and dotn let them affect you so much .... Go read the thread abotu being Offended i think it will be useful...
Hello there! As a fellow minority i agree, that racist comments can be annoying. But just do what the rest of us have done our whole lives, ignore them, report them and grow some thicker skin and stop giving a shit about what people say! They're only making themselves look stupid.

You are being ridiculous. Stings deep? Were you a slave? Did you get blasted by a firehose for stepping on a white mans shadow? No? Then stop. The horse is dead. Most civilized people are way above and beyond the mindset that people were in back then, so if you want to just sit there and keep reminding people that slavery happened and there are some close minded idiots still left in the world (weird..) then maybe you should just stop posting. We get it.
i really could care less what ppl say for the most part, but when you join 5 play/obs games in a row and everyone of them someone is typing "GOD**** N*****S" it seems to be a problem. when you have to report someone in every game that you play, thats work, i should get paid for that.
this list could help ppl avoid constantly reporting and just avoiding all together those ppl

I dont mean to sound insensitive and promote any sort of "we're racist and it's okay" attitude because frankly that's not accurate or true at all, but, seriously? pandemic? could you be anymore sensationalist?
just ignore them getting offended over something a person wrote on the internet after losing to someone has no meaning at all. The whole orb "upset" was just silly and words have often times different meanings. Faggot for example rarely ever means "i hate you because you are gay" and is almost never aimed at gay people it rather is used to make hetero men feel uncomfortable.
I don't think the implementation would work, way too easy to abuse and make false reports.
However, I think people attacking the basic idea of it is kinda ridiculous. Why shouldn't someone be called out for their immoral behavior? Why can't I share that event with other people, is playing SC2 a private relationship like a man and his priest/attorney/wife? Of course not.
And seriously, blaming the victim for being too sensitive? That's on its face ridiculous. Someone's life might be easier if they are not sensitive, but it isn't wrong morally for them to be sensitive. An extreme analogy is blaming a rape victim because of her clothing.

All that is easy for you to say. Are you Black? I'm sure you're not, because you wouldn't be saying all that with a tenth of the ease that you just did. To state that the OP is taking the situation just a little overboard is one thing(which is fair). To outright state that racism is not an issue(using controversial examples), is completely different and not appropriate.
Let's not be children here and pretend that words don't hurt people. They absolutely do. There are people in this world who are more sensitive than others. Is that their fault? I'd say no, it is not. The only thing that's left to not fight fire with fire(which makes the problem worse) but rather simply use what tools we have available to us to minimize it.
People rage, and say stupid shit over a video game, nothing new here. Calling it a "pandemic" is just silly, and such an obvious attempt to be sensationalist.
Don't get offended because some faceless name on your screen uses a word you disagree with, just ignore them (like use the in-game option so you cant see what they type) and report them to blizzard, or use the Fing language filter (it's there to protect your fragile growing mind). There's no reason to start a "black list" just don't stoop to that level yourself in the first place.
On March 31 2012 02:28 Shinespark wrote: Why is the "black list" the bad list?
Like others have said, that while your reason is admirable, this is the vary definition why the ignore and report buttons exist in SC2. OP says that "this will be a tool for players who want to avoid people who use racially insensitive terms", but how would that even work? You get matched up with someone and you might recognize their name from a "black list" so what? Do you automatically block chat? Hmm it seems to me that reporting a player to blizzard would have a greater effect than compiling a list of names here on TL.
Since the game came out I don't think I've ever had any racist comments used against me. Just the typical rage and "fag" and so on. I've met so many more nice people who I wind up chatting with about our game and eventually friending. Maybe because I play late after all the little kids are in bed...
you still say what you said, just like sarcasm is hard to read when you say racist and derogetory things like that the people on the other end dont know that somewhere deep in your heart your not a horrible person you just say these things to vent. I dont think that is a valid excuse, thats really stupid actually. You say what you say, mean what you say dont be cryptic, especially not when other ppl are the butt of the joke.
Racist Pandemic? Come on dude. Racism is not THAT bad. Yes there is the occasional flamer here and there but it is not like every other game you play someone calls you the N word or some other racist comment. As someone who is 25, you just really need to grow up and not be affected by the random internet troll. No need for a black list or anything of that sort.
As much as I hate racism, seriously, they are not after you specifically. Unless you tell them at the start of every ladder game "I am an african american" then people will say stupid shit. If someone call me a faggot on the internet, it's not because they actually think I am gay and want to hurt me, it's just a thing you say carelessly. So whatever "black list" you or anyone else has got I will not stand behind, this is the internet. If they all knew who you were beforehand it would be another thing, but they don't. The way you say it makes it sound like every other game is like this, which makes me think you are a cheesy player...
This is one of those thread again... if the op with 5 posts is considered "serious" and i give a "hahaha" or " something orb related" or " x/10" than i get warned, if its considered to be troll/pro orb guy and i leave a serious comment like " I didn't knew there was a way to see someones real life "race" online" than i get ridiculed.... theres not way of getting outa this
I never see jews complain about the hate, they just deal with it. Seriously making a big issue out of nothing, aslong as they're not harrasing or bullying you there isn't a problem.

From my point of view using the N word is far from being racist because no one rly mean it(Trust me you would find out if they do because a real racist wont stop at calling you out badly only). I mean how can you take it seriously when in some hip hop clip some afroamerican yells "nigga, nigga, nigga" while grabbing his balls ? They use it normally and are touched when someone from the "other" side used it. Feels kinda dumb right ?

"Offense is not given, it is taken".
I'm not saying racism is not an issue, I'm saying that to take offense from a word, typed by someone you don't know and will likely never speak to again, while your profanity filter is off, is really your problem, and doesn't warrant a blacklist thread on TL.
From this guy's standards, all Koreans/Taiwanese in KR server should be banned. We all shittalk each other with racial slurs all the time. No one gives a shit, and everyones playing fine. Man up/report and move on.
On March 31 2012 03:05 TheBigHurt wrote: is ignoreing a problem how it gets solved?
For this one, yes. Yes it is. There is a report button, an ignore button, and a language filter for a reason. The world is full of assholes, and the fact that they exist is no excuse to be lazy and not use the tools you have to deal with them. A blacklist will solve absolutely nothing.

This is a false dichotomy. One does not have to be a racist to engage in racist activities. A racist activity is a racist activity in spite of the intention of the subject who engages in the activity.
While I disagree with the notion of the blacklist, the OP is justified in wanting to tackle racism online. There is no excuse fro racist activity, even if it is not intentional. I am tired of people using the excuse that "it's just the Internet, what do you expect."
I want to report the OP as a racist. Shame to him, his family, ancestors and offspring.
Oh wait... turns out I was mistaken. Sorry. Too bad he already got excluded from his team and lost his esports job. /i hope this illustrates the possible problems with any such kind of approach
Racism and anonymity have always gone hand in hand. You can say "let's make a campaign to get rid of it," but unless you have a personal way of getting to someone, I really don't think there is much we can do to fix it. I am by no means defending racism nor do I practice any racial slurs, just stating the facts. Also, your black list idea highly reminds me of that episode of south park (reverse discrimination). That was a pretty funny episode actually.
edit: Did you create an account just to make a thread?
I have never experienced "Starcraft racism" myself. Can you give some examples of what you have experienced so those of us who haven't witnessed it can gauge just how offensive people are being?

man up AND report? doesn't go together. If he truly "manned up" then he wouldn't even be thinking about reporting, correct? I just leave it be(i don't report them), because i know the other guy is pissed and he's just venting.

Again, why is everyone always drawing this distinction? We have this attitude like the real thing that matters is whether the person is racist or not. The intentions of the person engaging in racism do not matter if the effect is racist.
Jay Smooth has spoken about this topic. I suggest that everyone check him out.
The "what they did" conversation verus the "what they are conversation."
As a Scots-Irish American, I would like to promote this thread. It would be great to be able to log on to b.net and knowingly avoid the people who would call me "Potato-Ginger", "Blightboy" and "Bagpipes MacGingerdrone." These all remind me of the times when my ancestors were persecuted for their heritage - and, of course, the more others say these things, the more true it makes them.
I can understand why you are upset when someone is using racial injures, but in this case the words are not directed to you; they have no way of knowing if you are part of a minority. Internet is a garbage place for all the frustrated of this world, the best we can do is ignore them.
a person offended doesn't know if your phony using racist language or a "real racist" using racist language. If you do not want to be associated with racism don't use racist language.
Racism isn't the word I'd use to describe it. I'd go with something more along the lines of child like temper tantrums or just plain stupidity. They call me "nigger" too and I'm white. One guy called me a Jew, but I'm not Jewish. They don't know what race you are so I hardly think that they're bad manners are racially motivated.
Orb was dropping n-bombs all over the webz but he isn't a racist. People just say stuff that's not always well thought out when they're upset.

best way to get rid of this is start to be upset about something different more, so people prefer that to insult others, making threads about it will increase it, reporting people silently will not shine light upon that this works as an insult and only the person that got banned will be reinforced in their opinion, that they can upset the most people by it. I would say 2% of the people that insult other with racials slurls actually mean it as an offense towards a race. 98% will use it because its super effective. Forcing a game to change all their skins on some enemies doesn't help you stop racism, especially on the internet it will just point trolls towards using this. So i guess this thread convinced a few more that they should research into this matter more, to insult the opponent in better ways.
that show the player useing racial slurs and intending to insult minority players.
And there is another problem. 99% of people who use racial slurs aren't intending to insult minority players. How do I know? Because you don't know the ethnicity of the person you are playing with. This idea is just bad.
The thing is the idiots that BM dont even know your race, gender or sexual orientation. I've been called a nigger a few times and I'm blonde. A girl I play with have been called faggot usually resulting in lots of amusement on our part. And we cant forget the classic "everybody is a noob" even if you would have won the GSL 20 times in a row you will be called a noob by some gold guy as soon as you enter a 4:4 game.
You just have to remember the old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones...".

my bus driver in middle school called us white trash, we told our parents, they got him fired.
but, this is the internet and most of us aren't in middle school. People need to realize that regardless of what color your skin is or where you come from, people don't fucking know this on the internet and are going to call you every racial slur in the book regardless. Obviously, racial slurs on the internet doesn't mean someone is racist, it means they're a raging nerd that's trying to offend you (and you're letting them...). Sometimes I think racism is perpetuated more by the offended than the offenders.
I control+F'd "4chan" and didn't see anything. People say nigger just because they know that they're not supposed to do it and that it pisses some people off. They're just trolling you; they aren't actually racist. It's just one of the less desirable aspects of internet culture. By getting upset at it you just let them win.
Also shinespark wins the best /thread post ever award.
They aren't racist people are just using words. Calling someone a nigger jew or chink on starcraft isn't racist if you knew they were said ethnicity and you were using it to offend them personally then maybe but we all know that wont be the case.
If anyone high profile enough acts out in a way that reflects negatively on the sc2 community, it won't go un-noticed, and random non prominent players saying offensive things is not a big deal at all.
I'd say the majority of the people throwing out words like nigger, faggot, etc, aren't in anyway hateful of a specific lifestyle or ethnicity. It's a part of many people's vocabulary. Destiny for example uses these words constantly, and he has even had people such as Debo support him in doing so. When people use these words, they generally aren't targeting the specific audience, more so you. It's no different than saying something such as "Fuck you newb." The whole purpose of it is to try and anger you.

Don't speak for everyone. I'm 100% non-racist, yet I joke and troll everyday with my black friends and coworkers, hell, THEY even start it themselves 50% of the time, and take no offense obviously since they know I'd do everything I can for them, as I'd do for any of my friends, regardless of age, sex, race, color or whatever means of sorting you use. Out of habit, I happen to swear with homophobic or racist slang sometimes since the words are just there, yet I have gay friends, too.
It all depends on the context the words are used.
Just speak for YOU and not for "of course, everybody else think that way", thank you very much.

TheBigHurt: do you think its ok to harrass someone? You: that doesn't answer my question You: if you think it's okay to "fuck someone up" because they called you a name, you're just as bigoted and intolerant as the racist and you're promoting a selfperpetuating cycle of hatred TheBigHurt: im not going to "fuck you up" TheBigHurt: im just letting other ppl know how you act so they can avoid you You: that's not even what I was suggesting You: but okay, you're free to do that, I really don't care
So basically someone was trolling, and was extremely successful. My opinion is that racism is not socially acceptable, obviously, but intentions are important. Just like TheBigHunt said, it's fine for a black person to call a black person "nigger", because while it's a racist remark, it all has to do with the intention. In this case, the intention was to troll.
Wait a minute, how does me using the term "nigger" qualify me as a racist?
I dont have any problem with people of african decent, I have a problem with niggers. Just like I have a problem with "white trash/wiggers/trailer trash/ect" To instantly assume that every black person is a nigger or that every white person is white trash/wiggers/trailer trash just because the color of their skin is silly, but having a problem with niggers/white trash/wiggers/trailer trash isnt really being racist. I just dont like people who act like that, race doesnt matter.
