What we just witnessed was the first day of TSL3. And man, will I say I was hyped. I'm not sure whether it was the fact of such big name players, or if it was the koreans playing foreigners, or just because it was all made possible by a community I am part of. I've never been so hyped and excited to watch a SC2 tournament in my life, and I have to say; it did not dissapoint. Not to mention it had more viewers (38k combined) than practically every tournament to date.
At first I'm sure people had their doubts, considering GSL does have the larger prizepool, and GSL "should" have higher level games. But I think, after today, many of those people might think otherwise. So I follow up with the question, what tournament excites you more?
Note: Not the higher level tournament but more ENTERTAINING or EXCITING
Poll: More Exciting Tournament ?TSL (198) 71% GSL (80) 29% 278 total votes Your vote: More Exciting Tournament ? (Vote): TSL (Vote): GSL
Now it's still hard to say what TSL will turn into, since it was only one day, but I'm sure we have a decent idea now. And I'll just post a quick summary of what I thought of the players and games:
+ Show Spoiler [Tyler vs Strelok] + Wow, was I impressed with Tylers play. Pretty much everytime he was moving out, I'm thinking to myself, Tyler are you a noob? His army is so much bigger than yours, and somehow he managed to crush it every single time. Very very good control and decision making in game one took him the game, not to mention, the holding of the push in game two with his upgraded stalkers was insane. Strelok played well, he could multitask well, but in the end, Tylers perfect sentry usage came out on top. Sad to see Strelok go, but happy to see Tyler advance.
+ Show Spoiler [Sen vs Fenix] + Sen is scary. Each game, by the time Fenix was floating to his natural - Sen had 45-50 drones. Lategame it honestly didn't matter what Sen did with his banelings and zerglings. The style really seemed similiar to the famous Sauron Zerg BW style of just sending a constant stream at your opponent. Fenix by no means played horrible, but I felt he could have been more agressive to prevent that scary 5 base economy.
+ Show Spoiler [FruitDealer vs ThorZaIN] + After game one I wasn't sure what to think. Thorzain gained a huge advantage and I felt like he almost let FD catch up, but in game two, his play was outstanding. I'm a fan of Thorzain now. His play was just so calm, relaxed, passive; but in a good way... Something about his play was just really really nice. He never felt like he needed to attack, he was fine just doing drops and expanding, making a scary army etc. Fruitdealer obviously not playing his max potential, lost lots of mutas carelessly but I didn't feel his play was horrid, just a couple key mistakes.
+ Show Spoiler [NightEnD vs Boxer] + I wasn't very impressed with either of the players this match. Both player seemed too passive to me, Boxer didn't drop, NightEnD didn't use his pheonix to harass. Although every battle I felt like NightEnD should win since that collosis army seemed scary, but Boxer managed to come out on top... In the third game actually, I thought NightEnd could even come back after losing his two expansions because he had a good number of collosis. NightEnDs collosis just don't do much damage to marauders for some reason, or maybe it's Boxers marauders that are so strong

Ehh this GSL is leaving me with mixed thoughts. Some very good games, and some ......games. So, so far, TSL>GSL

FD, when will you stop disappointing me...sigh... TSL, so far so good, reverse judgment until first round finishes.

Do we really need this? Both contribute greatly to E-Sports.
Personally I prefer GSL, though.
But obviously considering we're on TeamLiquid.net we already know the outcome of the Poll.
|
Voted GSL, but that was more as a product, watching Tastosis live is a thrill even when the games fall flat sometimes.
However TSL had better games i feel, at least from today. And i do like Chill and ofc OUR BOY Day9, but i wish we could see them, at least in a webcam once in a while.
I dont swing that way, i just wish to see them but otherwise fantastic start to TSL!

I dont see how you can tell right now considering GSL finished and TSL hasn't even finished round 1. GSL had some great games but the finals were extremely horrible.
|
Don't you think its a little bias posting this on teamliquid?

Well say you don't have 8 hours to watch SC everyday you need to pick one tournament. I'm curious which you would pick and enjoy more...

TSL 1/2 > OSL and MSL
highlight of sc always <3

Voted for TSL because
1) I like to watch more foreigner vs korean games 2) I don't have to wake up late at night 3) I like TSL's production value+community 4) I like the idea of different people from all over the world playing with different styles in one tournament.

I would pick GSL since my favourite player(MarineKing) isn't in TSL and I still feel like Koreans are better than foreigners, eventhough this season of GSL was disappointing.

It was cause of the fact that it was new. If TSL was like GSL every month it'd lose it's hype as well just like the GSL did. Both provide different experiences so it's not really fair to compare them.
I love and enjoy both of em.

tsl doesn't have tastosis.
|
i like tsl more, but tasteless and artosis are priceless and irreplacable, so gsl all the way:D

i guess you havent seen the macrofest that is Boxer v Nightend? I like TSL mainly due to the hype, the fact its made by the community and that basically all the most awesome players from the world (including my personal fav TLO) are playing. However i hope matches will be like the Thorzain v FD quality, and not Boxer v Nightend...coz that seriously was subpar
|
TSL showed less refined builds and moderately good execution from some players. It isn't really a Korean v/s European "style" problem as one of the most disappointing players was FruitDealer (approximative unit control, uninspired build orders) and Nony/Tyler showed almost perfect execution, but it seems to me the Code S players show overall a better understanding of the game and more attuned builds. Sadly, this goes against the "excitement" of the match as SC2 heavily favors the "Two-base timing push" style.
Therefore, i would say TSL is more exciting on the initial rounds, but starting from Ro8, it's gonna be korean packed and probably, it will look like just like GSL (good gaming, but a little boring).
|
I think the poll results would look very different if it was made right before the GSL5 finals occurred. Right now they GSL hype is over and the (disappointing) finals has left a somewhat bitter aftertaste for many people while the TSL hype train has been in full swing and the tournament has just started.
|
While i like both GSL and TSL, i prefer the GSL just because you play live to avoid issues of cheating, cross-server lags and dcs.
|
Live lan tournaments are different from playing at home. The KEY skill of handling pressure in front of a crowd at a live lan event is not showcased here, which is why these two events are not comparable.
As far as the overall level of play, it's too early to tell. I can, however, say that the GSL Team League in February showcased a much higher level of play than anything thus far, in either the GSL or TSL.

There were no obs in TSL games, it was casted via replay so there wasn't any cheating involved (unless either play used 3rd party software). But yeah there is cross-server lag and dc, as in the boxer game 1, which was unfortunate.

This is like comparing apples and oranges. It doesnt make sense at all. GSL has been on for 5 seasons, TSL is just starting today (not counting the first 2 since they were SC1.) The format of the tournament is different as well as the setting. Maybe after the TSL is over we can make some sort of comparison but it makes little sense at this point.
|
Although the TSL production + stream quality was much higher, the games themself have not being as fun to watch (skill-wise) compared to the GSL so far, most of the games today seemed pretty one-sided. The live studio really gets you pumped for the GSL games, even if it's Code A. That's something the TSL really lacked.
|
It really comes down to the individual games. GSL has produced some of the best games of SC2 yet played. TSL has the potential to show the best games between the best players in the world, not just in Korea.
Sure the last GSL finals were disappointing, but that was expected considering that July's ZvP was definitely not up to snuff to MC's style, and July was absolutely clueless against MC's 6 warpgate sentry timing attack. A mismatch of skill levels and an unsolved abusive build all contributed to an expected roflstomp, but it's not truly representative of the GSL as a whole. We still got tight games between SanZenith and everyone else not named MC. Nada vs July was absolutely intense. MKP pulled off one of the most immaculate mass factory pushes against Kyrix. GSL is still awesome, but you just need to look for the proper games to watch, not just the roflstomps.
TSL should be an absolutely amazing tournament, especially considering the lineup in the brackets. We have the best of the Korean scene, the best of the non-Korean scene, former BW legends, and ominous upcoming unknowns all battling it out in what could possibly be the best international tournament yet. Of course, not all the games will be entertaining and close. MC vs Ciara is expected to be yet another roflstomp, possibly eclipsing MC vs July in pure ownage. There is no guarantee that TLO vs Nada, Jinro vs Morrow, or Nestea vs Goody will all be fantastic series. There is no guarantee that players will play their best or not resolve to use cheese. Heck, there is no guarantee that we won't get random disconnects during games. We could be seeing cheese for the rest of the tournament, or we could be seeing epic macro games. GSL has been played, and many of its games are quite good. TSL has yet to be played, and like a Christmas day present on Christmas eve, we all shall eagerly await the games that will come out of it.
Essays and walls of texts aside, I guess I prefer GSL slightly more than TSL. The entertainment is more likely to be top notch considering the lack of cross-server lag, the quality of the Korean players, the production values, THE MUSIC, and Tastosis. TSL is still looking quite good so far, though.
|
GSL, obviously. Casted replays with horrible cross-continent latency isn't my idea of an ideal tournament.
|
Voted GSL for the following reasons:
-Only the GSL has the one and only casting archon, there's no couple that can compare -The GSL is completely live, and has booths, and music, and k-pop, and all that insane production value and ridiculous things only koreans can do. -I like how exciting every match is, even allins are. -This poll is biased, since it's made right after the TSL playday 1
Imo it doesn't matter if I don't know the results. Being live just gives it that little something extra that makes it better and more exciting. Also, I've watched so much GSL I've grown fond of the players, a lot more so than EU/NA players except for a few names. For example, in today's matches tyler's win didn't cause me any feeling, while FD's loss ripped my heart from my chest from sadness. I just never "see" tyler playing, while I "saw" FD performing the miracle, LIVE, and it was goddamn awesome.
On a game level, the GSL players seem to have a better understanding of the game. Many here say "well, all koreans do is allin, so boring so boring". But the real reason we don't see that many macro games in the GSL is because EU/NA players have yet to nail early pressure as thoroughly as KR players do. When players do hold, and games go on, we get INCREDIBLE macro games, not these "let's mass 200/200 and clash at the middle then GG", but games with action all over the place, drops, simultaneous multi-pronged attacks and other feats of epicness, tense micro battles for better positioning, awesome forcefields, EMPs, storms, tank positioning, etc.
TL;DR: As a whole, in a game level, in a "TV show" level, and on a heart attachment level, there's nothing like the GSL.
The TSL is awesome as well!!, I'd say it's the second best tourney ever, and when it becomes live, it will probably be right up there, side by side with it.
|
TSL is awesome!!! But personally I still think more highly of GSL. The players are more serious about it.

There was really a lot of hype, and it was easier to watch, but with online cross-servers between EU and KR there is always this feeling : "would the games have gone differently if there wasn't lag from each side?" so as cool it is to see KR vs foreigners we can't really compare. Both are cool. (edit : quality of the games skill-wise we'll never hit the level of GSL sadly :/)

i can relate a lot more to the players in TSL therefor to me it's more exciting
only plus for GSL is tastosis

I don't think we need a thread like this, we run different events with different goals at different times during the day. I'd much rather focus on cooperation and promoting both events than pitting them against each other.
