I dont know shit about expanding and play 1 base all time. A lot of my games end in early pushes. If the game goes I start to play really sloppy and i either win due to the other player handling 2-3base worse or lose due to them being better at it. How do i improve? How do i get out of this style of play and move into diamond? I know its not the correct way by timing but in starting to learn to expand, I generally expand when either 1.) Im pushing and have the extra mins (or will save up if close) or 2.) I have the mins and I control all paths leading to my nat (usually the middle of the map on blizz maps). I find both of these are pretty good times to expand. FE timings are usually once you have the minimum to defend on like 1gate, or with forge (around 30 food usually, i just know for toss). Also, instead of just using hellion thor vs zerg (which isn't good against ALL zerg builds) you need like 3 or 4 builds vs each race, each one good against different groups of things zerg can do. Like MMM vs toss is very very ineffective against a good toss who can get colossi out fast then hold you off with them while teching to templar. Once they get templar, if your stick to MMM without ghosts you pretty much lose. Heck, Gateway + Colossi will most likely beat you unless you get vikings. It seems from your post that to me, the best way for you to improve is to learn to adapt to what your opponent is doing (while trying to hide you adaptation until they win the game for you)

Thats intereseting because I have found that 4 gating against zerg is really easy to hold off. Put down a few spines and gets some lings and you are good to go. If they get greedy thats the only way they will loose to it.

So getting to my point I am in no way a skilled player, and it baffles me at what level of low brain function someone has to be at to not atleast be at 600 diamond. Having that said I think you have to be a 2 on a scale of 1-10 to be in plat. 10 being skilled, 1 being mildly retarded.

As of my writing, there are less than 250 players in the entire world who have 2k + rating. So only 250 players are decent? With that being said, it is true that not all diamond players have good understanding of the game, and there are definitely all in cheeser sneaking into diamond. But to say only 2k+ rating are decent player are just pure bull shit. Hell, as of this writing, I see guys like Lzgamer, and people in the prime and werra clan in the 1900-1800 rating. Are you telling me that those guys are not decent player? Instead of saying what rating is consider "good" or "bad", people should define what people at those rating are capable of doing. Unfortunately my first post wasn't explained well and properly worded and I just pulled out some numbers out of my head. I'll admit it looks a bit like a troll post now that I'm reading it back and shows some elitism towards those reading which clearly wasn't my purpose (if you look at my next post after that). I'm not saying the players you mentioned sucks (lol what makes 99% rest of the world then?) but like you said it's better to mention people of what they are capable of doing instead of good/bad or set a limit on (which I unintentionally did). People in leagues below should just focus on improving themselves rather than look in which division they are. Diamond may be the highest division but it doesn't mean that being in diamond makes u capable of alot of things just yet. No matter the rating / skill everyone is learning (this was the point I was trying to make to the OP). For instance someone capable of competing with the worlds best who just started playing sc2 could very well be stuck in platinum due to promotion system like Idra etc had during release of sc2.

Personally I'm quite unhappy with being in platinum, even if I was a low diamond I'd be happier. I only started playing 1v1s the other day and while I have a lot of RTS game time under my belt I have almost no 1v1 experience. Team games are what I'm used to and the 1v1 experience is a hell of a lot different and in my opinion a lot harder. I was placed in platinum on day 1 and stopped playing for ages, started again 3 weeks ago and got demoted to gold, back in platinum as of a few days ago and winning 2/3 games. I should be in diamond fairly soon, I'm being pitted against diamond players and that's a sign that it's unsure if I'm ready for a promotion. Hoping to be there by the end of the week.

In plat, there are many people who knows what they are doing, but they make few, but sometimes critical mistakes like getting expo or upgrades too late / lacking of easy multitasking like producing units during a battle.

I played SC1 back in the day, and I watch loads of pro replays and commentaries, so I have a pretty good understanding of how to play (always build workers, don't get supply blocked) and the unit counters, and when I actually play I feel like I am playing pretty well, constantly building units and doing drops to disrupt my opponent's economy. Admittedly if I get to mid/late game, my minerals start piling up, but I'm working on that, but most of my games seem to last about 15 mins. Unfortunately I have no idea what ranks my opponents have been since I never check (since I never thought of it before reading this thread) and I really think Blizz should show this on the loading screen, and they should show your opponent name at least on B.Net in your match history. I guess the simple answer is I am at 50% win rate so I deserve to be in bronze? Just feels like I am doing as much as I can at the moment, so I don't know how my play is different to a higher ranked player (not meaning to sound obnoxious). I should probably upload a replay and you guys will just shoot so many holes in my gameplay I'm not aware of ^_^ (although I do analyse almost every loss if I don't know why I lost).

Well no, beign at 50% means you are at the right place, diamond players have also 50%... but at diamond this meens they are at the right place. When you will start winnig more you will go up until you go back to 50% in silver for example. As for being bad or terrible in bronze. Well yes bronze player are just bad, this is the lowest division anyway so bottom 20% of players database. What this thread is about is that for many when you are below like 800diamond this just means : - You don't know basic stuff (money low, building workers constantly, general counters) - You lose to cheese too much So for many this is considered the tutorial part of the multiplayer or the easy part, medium part beign 800 to 1400 and hard expert whatever above. Personnaly I'm 1300diamond and I just clearly see that I do some horrible stuff here and there. Just my basics are ok, I have some openers and I can counter the common cheese. I know I could get fairly good but my main issue is I can't put enough time into the game to actually play a lot more to get higher.

However, it isn't that hard to get to mid diamond (1400ish). I don't think I've improved drastically since platinum. IMO I think the most important thing you can work on is macro, my rank shot from platinum to mid-diamond when I started constantly producing workers/supply buildings and units.

Ehh 50% w/l ratio means you prolly should be in bronze. What I dun understand is how I've had like 20 wins in a row against high gold/mid-high plat people (and like 40 wins total against them with like 10 losses at most) and stayed bronze (im at 63% W ration atm and going up constantly). I mean I have the lowest number of wins and I'm number one in my league (only played like 100 1v1 games)... most people in the top 10 have at least 200 games played some up to 500, and I have the lest number of losses out of like the top 20 (35ish out of 100 games).

Most platinum players lack in either macro (which is fixable pretty easily) or their army composition is just not very effective. That's where most of the differences come from between various levels. Also the lower you go the more people do these "cute" rushes: DT's, Banshees, etc., while forgetting to keep on top of their economy and main army. Often times they have no plan past their harass. Other things to note, I know I can get away with building zealots against another weaker protoss player who's massing stalkers and get away with it because he won't micro his stalkers. Terran players often do not try dodging storms much or do not counter collosus at all. Zerg players often overextend themselves early and will die to any early pressure. On another hand, some zergs will pretty much all in early and then die from having half the production capability.

I've noticed that a ton of platinum and low diamond players can't transition out of a strategy, people will open reactor hellion and do some damage but get stopped by my crawlers at this point instead of transitioning they just keep going hellions.

In reality what most people in Diamond, that have been there since launch basically, don't realize is that as you play games in any division lower the competition is getting harder because everyone is learning this game at the same time. So even if you were in bronze in the beginning you might be now playing in bronze, but at the level of someone who was originally placed in platinum at launch. Now in some cases this is not true. I'm in Platinum at around 1100 or something I'm not sure I haven't played in a day or so and I started in Bronze at launch. I'm not good, But I am a million times better than I was when I started. But going through each division and staying in each for quite some time (I think I'm like 215-190 or something) I have an idea of what people at each division play like.. I've played the lowest of bronze and I've played Diamonds up to 1700. And I think I can safely give a generalization. Bronze: They know a build order, they have trouble executing it and it tends to make their resources climb high. They usually won't expand, and if they do they won't add more structures. They have the foundation but haven't been able to really smooth out what they have seen in replays. Silver: They keep their resources down a bit better. And some have even learned to expand fairly decent. However most still don't add structures and usually only take the 2nd base when the 1st has mined out. They seemed to think sending their entire army was a harass technique. Gold: The second base is going down on time and they are keeping their money low. They don't take map control and usually turtle blind the entire game moving out when they run out of room to keep their army in their base (an exaggeration but you get the idea). They can keep pressure on the opponent a little bit considering the other person has trouble defending harassment. Platinum: The expo is a given (unless it's a one base all in) and now players have started experimenting with a third base timing. Harass is hit and miss and the macro usually suffers quite a bit from the attempt. Diamond: Same as plat in the lower tiers but the harassment seems to be a lot more polished. Once you get around 1200-1400 it seems players are much smoother with their builds and harassment and the multitasking is on a whole different level compared to platinum. This is truthfully where I first started seeing people with APM near 100 without mindless spamming. As for the 1700 level I've played a few (custom games with people trying to help me get better) and from what I see these people are just discipline and practice away from being 2000+.. Everything is about the same just not polished as the games you'll see in pro replays. As for 2000+ check replays and streams of major tournaments.

I am still a terrible player. I just got better game sense and tighter build orders. Don't much care about getting better - I play only in spare time after work and I'm too old to care about competitive gaming.

Hehe, yeah I thought this was probably the cold hard truth, but it just doesn't feel like I am a bad player, and the guys I play against aren't all bad. It's not like I roll in there with my army and they have like 5 units ^_^. I'm a little embarassed though at having played 141 league games and still being in Bronze :-(. Anyway, I will just have to try harder. It's a bit tough to advance though since I only have time to play about 3 games a night after work. Edit: I just realised I am actually in Silver, but still... :-)
