In reality what most people in Diamond, that have been there since launch basically, don't realize is that as you play games in any division lower the competition is getting harder because everyone is learning this game at the same time. So even if you were in bronze in the beginning you might be now playing in bronze, but at the level of someone who was originally placed in platinum at launch. Now in some cases this is not true. I'm in Platinum at around 1100 or something I'm not sure I haven't played in a day or so and I started in Bronze at launch. I'm not good, But I am a million times better than I was when I started. But going through each division and staying in each for quite some time (I think I'm like 215-190 or something) I have an idea of what people at each division play like.. I've played the lowest of bronze and I've played Diamonds up to 1700. And I think I can safely give a generalization. Bronze: They know a build order, they have trouble executing it and it tends to make their resources climb high. They usually won't expand, and if they do they won't add more structures. They have the foundation but haven't been able to really smooth out what they have seen in replays. Silver: They keep their resources down a bit better. And some have even learned to expand fairly decent. However most still don't add structures and usually only take the 2nd base when the 1st has mined out. They seemed to think sending their entire army was a harass technique. Gold: The second base is going down on time and they are keeping their money low. They don't take map control and usually turtle blind the entire game moving out when they run out of room to keep their army in their base (an exaggeration but you get the idea). They can keep pressure on the opponent a little bit considering the other person has trouble defending harassment. Platinum: The expo is a given (unless it's a one base all in) and now players have started experimenting with a third base timing. Harass is hit and miss and the macro usually suffers quite a bit from the attempt. Diamond: Same as plat in the lower tiers but the harassment seems to be a lot more polished. Once you get around 1200-1400 it seems players are much smoother with their builds and harassment and the multitasking is on a whole different level compared to platinum. This is truthfully where I first started seeing people with APM near 100 without mindless spamming. As for the 1700 level I've played a few (custom games with people trying to help me get better) and from what I see these people are just discipline and practice away from being 2000+.. Everything is about the same just not polished as the games you'll see in pro replays. As for 2000+ check replays and streams of major tournaments. This. I'm on the "I suck" train too (Platinum Zerg, EU server) and because I have friends from low to relatively high Diamond, I know that these players have to work on basically everything too. But people should take into consideration that the overall skill level improved. I for example got into Gold league back in the Beta and my game was basically horrible. I massed endgame units like Broodlords (and people actually allowed it) and Golds played like that. Since then I improved much, but anyone else in Gold did it too and I did not advance because I improved with the same pace as my league fellows until I got promoted some days ago. I spend so much time in the Gold league that I feel qualified to judge it better then some people perhaps. The Gold skill level improved significantly since late Beta (ofc still pretty bad in comparison to everyone above), they have now some build orders down (at least until 30/40 food), they have somewhat of a gameplan, a little bit multi-tasking and harass going on. In Gold and Platinum people expand about one or two times a game too (Zerg players have to for example), but their timing is still a little bit awkward. They often know counters etc. But I noticed that the overall skill level of Protoss players is a little bit below that of their ranking fellows. No offense, but I got the impression that Protoss rewards 1base all-in play a little bit more than Zerg or Terran.

From my experience if you haven't been promoted to diamond after trying for a while you are most likely lacking in some basic rts skills. I am still in gold after 40 games. I started in Bronze because I threw my 5 initial placement matches because I wanted to get some practice in 1v1 and work on my macro mechanics, rather than start at a Platinum level and be stressed out. The match making system has been putting me against 1000-1500 rated diamond players consistently for the past 20 matches, and I have been winning about 67% of my games in those situations. Obviously I'm not good (I consider 1800 to be good) but I am obviously good enough to be in mid-level diamond. I've heard of other people with similar experiences. With that said, I think if you play enough games and are winning it's just a matter of time before you get promoted in a league. As for whether that is good or not depends on your own mentality. If you're comparing yourself to the average than you're great. If you're comparing yourself to the best, you still suck pretty bad. Personally I think anything other 1800 diamond at this point means you have a ton to learn and work on. It really doesn't matter what other people think. Your best competition is always going to be yourself. ![]()
