it all depends whether you consider yourself a casual player or not. come off it, if you're 1.5k diamond (and have been there for some time), chances are you are either trying too hard or not trying hard enough. Sure, you're good - better than me, in fact, but where does that take you? Nowhere. You're very good, but not good enough to compete as a pro, yet you obviously sink too much time and effort into a game to be a "for fun gamer".
I consider myself to be a for fun player. That is, totally casual. I'm 500+ diamond and actually stopped playing league altogether when I got there. That is to say I have no illusions about my skill level - it's pretty bad. But if you as a platinum (barring those bugged players - cauthon etc. who clearly belong in high diamond) think you are even decent at this game, you need to wake up really.
Especially those in plat with 1.1k+ points who can't promote - I'd say you are either a slow learner, or just not cut out for high level RTS play, and there is no way you will ever be as good as a low diamond without learning from your mistakes. How do you play that many games and not get into diamond and still think you are good?

You can sit in your armchair and evaluate how badly a team is playing and how their strategy and teamwork is way off, and your critique could have some truth to it. But the fact is, the people you are criticizing are some of the best players in the world, and the fact that they make recognizable mistakes speaks to the difficultly of executing strategies well in the heat of the moment.
Exactly right. I've been a lurker on these boards for a while now, and while it's somewhat refreshing to see a bunch of people on a gaming forum proclaim that they're terrible rather than awesome, it can get a little overblown. @sleepindog: 3clipse did not prove your point; he dismantled it entirely. Just because you can spot "facepalm" mistakes at high levels of play does not mean the play is not high level. Execution is what ultimately matters, and even the best players in any game or any sport are going to make mistakes.
"Good" and "bad" are not objective; they are relative by definition. If your definition of "good" is perfection, you'll be bad at everything.

ummm. I can't think of where I saw it off the top of my head, but there has been threads on here, they are going to run it like the WoW arena seasons. after every major patch. (read : 4-6 months) they are going to do a tournament for the top section of players.. and then reset the ladder.

what I simply not get is, why so many ppl actually think they are "supposed" to be good - why?
I mean, a bunch of kids with personality issues...ok....but it seems like for the vast majority it's a big deal to be considered as a bad player; hell, on the bnet-forums every day there are a couple of threads from bronze-players who complain about that none of the other posters takes them seriously when it comes to balance/strat-talks and how they actually know how to play the game
why...just why? I mean, I have a good theoretical knowledge but have no probleme admitting that I pretty much suck at playing; why is it such a big deal for everybody what others think of them? why do plat-players wanna be seen as "good"? why do low-diamonds wanna be seen as "good"? I don't get it....seriously, somebody enlighten me plz

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on what "good" is. It's really hard to determine if someone is good or not by just looking at what league they are in. You have to take in so many different considerations before you can call someone bad.
I haven't had time to play for the past 2 weeks, and now I'm finally getting back at it. I have over 260 bonus pool points from this and my rank just stayed while everyone else kept getting points. Does that mean I'm suck at the game? No. I just can't play as much as some.

When I get matched against someone who's platinum, I almost always shit on them. Lately the game just pairs me with 1400+/- diamond players and I'm only winning 2/5 atm >< I would never consider someone in platinum to be pro. Either they'll be moved up soon if they're any good, or they're just as bad as the rest ^^
I don't think you really start seeing people being really good until they have a pretty decent amount of points in diamond. There's still plenty of not so great diamond players.
i think this guy got it right. platinum is a joke. some diamond players are a joke but in plat it is worse.

I'm in platinum, about 300-400 points, but I think it's because I haven't played many games. I have a huge bonus pooled massed up, and most of my games net me 30 points, while my losses drop me by 15 or 10.
I should be placed a lot higher, but not sure if I'll get promoted to diamond.
But yeah, the difference between high-plat to mid-diamond level players is quite substantial.

You think just because you are in diamond with 500 points, that you are better than someone in platinum with 1.2k points?
Then you are under a illusion of your skill level.

Overall I am high silver and played a friend´s account in placements, got platinum and kept playing and did a 60% W L, till playing low diamonds(edit: then stabilished to 50% ... ) Didnt see that much difference of silver bronze gold and platinum, but when I got to a point where playing custom games around mid-high diamond I got COMPLETELY roflstomped, it was like kid playing soccer against an adult, so overall i think bronze should be bronze, silver gold and platinum should be silver and diamond should be gold, but diamonds are so far in skill level it´s not even funny, it´s easier a mid silver beat a low diamond than a low diamond beat a high skilled, from what I played/saw in replays ...

When playing exclusively toss, i was about 1.1k Plat.
If you think people in Plat are bad players and have no concept of how an rts works you're flat out wrong in my opinion. You most likely have no grasp on what the typical gamer really is capable of. Team liquid is not a good place to judge how good or bad an rts player you are, it's the hardcore crowd.
l know people who have been playing RTS games since Dune, and I trust those people's opinions on RTS games in general way more than diamond or even pro sc players. Give me a gray haired RTS vets opinion anytime over they guy who started playing an RTS a year ago and is diamond.

Most video games teach you to be sorta lazy, so if you're coming to starcraft from non-competetive games you'll probably have a lazy mindset you sink into when you play that you'll have to make yourself break out of in order to remember everything you have to do and do it fast enough. I think that might be part of the reason why most people are so "bad" at starcraft. You probably have an inherent advantage if you haven't spent much time playing stupid, brain rotting games like WoW or jrpgs (not gonna lie, i've enjoyed some jrpgs in my time, i'm just sayin').

Personally I think this league system is stupid. I'm in Gold league and consistently facing 1200+ Diamond players.
None of it makes sense.

No, points don't mean shit. I have a 400 bonus pool, and i'm a 1400 diamond player. Does that mean a 1600 diamond player is better then me? I dunno, no way to tell. He could have 500 BP or 0 because he plays alot. He is in diamond, because he's better.

This kind of what I'm alluding to. This community is so full of individuals who represent the top 0.5% of all players, that they have no concept of how good they actually are. So they throw around the "I suck balls" card nonchalantly.
They are very very much on the right side of the bell curve.
Edit: iPhone grammer.

Beside the maintopic alot of people dont really understand the laddersystem. There is your League/Rating and your hidden Rating.
simple version:
If you are a Silver/500 Player and play against a Platinum/x Player it's just because your hidden Rating ist about the same. To be promoted to a higher league you need to get a higher hidden Rating. If your not getting promoted even if you win a lot against higher ranked players its just because their public Rating doesnt match their hidden Rating - they are worst then their rating.
PS: Hope my english isnt the worst.

really the only thing I feel that sets ppl apart in leagues bronze-mid diamond is macro. I mean im 1300 diamond atm and I dont know 1 build order and I dont have many timings down I just macro my ass off.
so to answer your question about how I view plat players well I think they have a good understanding of the game in general but if im ever pushed against a wall I get out by just having more stuff.

I'm in diamond league (not that it means anything) and I can say that after my experience with the league system, I think it is counter productive to what Blizzard was probably trying to achieve.
As I understand it, the league system is in place so that people are less disheartened by their ranking because it being rank 5 platinum sounds better than rank 121033 worldwide (or whatever is the equivalent). However, I can't help but notice that what happens is most people think, anything not diamond is trash, and so even if you're rank 5 platinum, you just feel like crap because you can't get into diamond for whatever reason. And what's with the whole segregation thing anyway? The rationale supporting the new league system seems to hinge on a variation of "separate but equal" sort of thinking.
But I'm curious, for those not it diamond, are you proud of your current ranking or do you just feel like trash because you're not in diamond?
DISCLAIMER: I realize that being in diamond means NOTHING really and that not being in diamond does not mean you're worthless and your opinions are trash. I by no means endorse the idea that anyone not in diamond is trash.

Yes they are. I have quite a few r/l friends, people i video game and board game with that play SC2. They are no where near the gold/plat/diamond level, and I believe that is a good representation of the population as a whole.
StarCraft isn't hard, it's acutally simple and elegant. What's hard is execution. People know what they have to do, they understand the concepts of economy, battle, research etc, that's not what's lacking. what's lacking is execution not understanding.

i dont consider myself very good after playing and seeing pro players play, im at about 1500 diamond with z.
