That being said, in general most platinum players can't deal with early all in agression sufficiently well to have a comfortable late game either. Around 1000ish points in diamond players are seem DECENTLY comfortable at playing during all stages of the game and therefore matchups become a bit more dynamic in that sense. Who wants to 4gate and play vs 4gate all day?

I've been playing high plat/low diamond for my last 30 games and most of them are terribad (I got about 90% win over these last 30) What has me wondering is I still don't get promoted from... silver =) The wonders of the magical mystery ladder system...

There are huge population groups that that are always vocal about how they are in bronze or gold, but almost no one says Platinum.

Everyone below that needs to work on them. Platinum league is filled with cheese because most players think that they earn bragging rights for being in diamond.

Most people have the idea of Diamond is the highest league so that means if you reach Diamond means you're good which is such an illusion. There are about 750k active bnet users on sc2(?) which lowers the bar to reach Diamond severely. Unless you place good in high level tournaments don't think you're good.

Getting to Diamond/Plat is like climbing a mountain and seeing that you are near the top. You are pretty happy with your self that you've made it this far and it feels like an accomplishment, but then the next day the fog clears revealing the mountain is three times as big as you thought it was and becomes increasingly harder to climb the further you go up. This. If you keep playing and are on TL platinum league is just a blink of time in your life, maybe 3-4 days. and This. Took me 39 games, with 23 wins to go from initially placed Gold -> Platinum -> Diamond. I play random and can do only a few things (barely) consistently: -make workers -expand -make units -micro roaches against zealots, stalkers against roaches, stutter step MM, etc. That being said, here are the things I suck at: -timings, knowing when to attack, when to expand, when to tech -army placement/flanking -complex big army engagements requiring lots of micro, e.g. overlord carpet bombing, force fielding, etc. -late game and this list goes on and on - I'm only now starting to realize how much i DON'T know about this game. Basically, you only need to do the fundamentals decently well to make it into diamond, at least in this season. Watching someone like Cool play only makes you realize how far you really are from top Diamond. Reading stuff on this forum and learning about different strategies and mechanics definitely has improved my game, in addition to watching pro replays and my own replays. I believe anyone that actively learns the game (and hence will probably be on TL) will inevitably be promoted into diamond, unless your reflexes are REALLY bad or other mechanical limitation. Oh and if you're consistently getting matched up with opponents in a higher league, that's a sign that the matchmaking system thinks you can win against these guys, and if you win enough, you'll get promoted. I started getting diamond opponents while I was still in Gold, and it only took 5 games or so to make the jump from Gold -> Diamond.

I think as it stands now most players in platinum don't have their mechanics down, low level diamond (900-) is players that are just starting to get their mechanics working. Mid level diamond (900-1700) is a mixture of people who are at their skill cap and casual players who just got the mechanics from SC1 but don't feel like putting in an effort to get any better. Then from there on up it is varied, some people are horrid but ride on a few well executed strategies, other people are damn good and could give the best players a ride for their money. But if you really want to judge your skill join some of the open weekly tournaments. For the record I play on EU.

I hate this term "good", what does it mean? Diamond is top 5%, some would consider that good. Gold is better than average, isnt that good? Placing high in a tournament doesnt mean you're good, it just means you're better than everyone else, but you could still be terrible? Unless you define good as "better than the rest" but then diamond would be good aswell. Platinum players arent bad, they are better than gold, worse than diamond. Diamond players are better than players in every other league. I'd say that being better than 95% of everyone else is quite good. If it isnt then i dont see how anyone could be good. Good

When you get into diamond. You are excited to be at the top, but be rest assured just because you are in diamond it does not mean you are hot shit. I am friends that are 500 - 800 point diamonds.. somehow I wonder how they got in the league. I myself am a 1500 diamond ... yet better players like murder on my team are 2k+ It is very hard to compare myself to murder because he is seen to be on a whole different level. So think of diamond being separated.. thats why it seems so far from platinum. The game becomes brand new as soon as you breach the diamond league.

Up until diamond all you're doing is just making units, and keeping money low. That's all you need. You could get to diamond making only Carriers, or only marines, it doesnt matter as long as you keep your money low and keep making drones. I'm only like 1300 diamond and i am terrible at the game. I will get supply blocked and forget important upgrades. So will 2k rated players. It's always funny how people with theorycraft for hours and find new strategies, when they're still in gold/bronze. Because at those levels, it doesnt matter, at all. Then again, diamond players are still pretty bad. It will be a few years before anyone will actually be good at the game (non pros). 1800 diamond still means you make a ton of mistakes, and probably get supply blocked alot. But there is still a big jump from platinum to diamond. Bronze players are really really bad, and probably never play the game. silver - platinum players are pretty similar, i can rarely tell them apart. Not all Bronze players are really bad. Some of us just can't get promoted. Like all my matches this week have been against high plat players, and last week were pretty much top 5 gold players and some low plat. It's funny how they get pissed when I tell them I'm in bronze as I'm beating them though (with macro/micro and not cheesing, only time I cheese is if they leave my probe in their base alone and I then do it to punish them.)

1400+ is about the top 0.5% of all players. That is ridiculously hard to crack! Starcraft takes a lot of games to learn. The diversity all off 3 races openings and what you need to do to beat it takes a very long time to learn. Even the dudes who play this game for a living have barely scratched the surface on its complexity. If you have made diamond you have a very solid understanding of the basics...and in my opinion you have really gotten down 1 base play. Which at this point in the metagame is good. But you also have a LONG ways to go. Every once in a while I get a 1v1 vs a guy who has about 500 points in diamond And like 45 games under their belt with a 65%+ win percentage. More often than not, I steamroll them. I'll watch a replay and they have a solid 1 base build order, but they get lost after that since at the lower levels the game is decided on that very first push and they don't learn how to progress. It takes time. It doesn't mean he sucks, he just hasn't gone swimming in those waters before. Point being, you don't "suck" if you aren't 1400 diamond, you just have a lot to learn before you hit a point in the ladder where a deep understanding of game mechanics and timings are required to win. Until then, learn the units and basic build orders (yes, plural. 4 gate and proxy reapers every game will only get you so far). You will need those tools as you progress. Edit: to further my point, a USCF "master" represents the top 1% of all tournament chess players (rated 2200+). You are extremely talented to reach that level. Anyone even close to that rating is very very good at chess.

Good If you really want to start that way :p than you can ask the same about what defines pro / bad or any other measurement about gamers. The only way you can measure someone good is if you measure it from the perspective of the world's/region's best. Like you said: "Placing high in a tournament doesnt mean you're good, it just means you're better than everyone else, but you could still be terrible". Unless you place good in high level tournaments don't think you're good. With this I meant tournaments / leagues where top ranked ladder players are competing and I mean top ranked from sc2ranks / top200 bnet rankings not rank 1 from a diamond division. Just to clarify for you. It is just because the game is new and with the players being very competetive makes 1400+ look like nothing in a week or 2 for the diamond players involved. You are right that we should word 1400 diamond with something else than bad/decent or w/e something like refining the basic game mechanics or something would be beter fitting since due to the bonus pool the ratings are increasing very fast for everyone.

I win because i master the scouting/reacting part. I know how to use counters and unit skills. And use good timing for drops. I don't try to improve, dont watch any pro game and I'm really bad at multitask... As soon as, i need to micro seriously, my eco goes up 1 000 minerals. So, yes, Platinum is bad.

Nowadays, I feel this extends to 1200pts Diamond or even higher. These would all be D players on the old ICCUP ranking system. Games in that range are a high percentage of cheese, one-base all-ins, or in the best case single-expo games with just one major battle and gg.
