Please understand, folks defending this change saying there is nothing wrong with it, that its not the change itself that's the problem, the problem is the precedent that it opens... It starts with the name, then is the country , then is the city, then its your phone number... ...were will it stop?!
For those defending it saying that "it's just the name and no one can do nothing with the name alone" what would be the info that would make you angry about it being shared? phone number? race? sexual orientation?... ...for some of us the name is already the limit.
Ppl forget to value privacy until its lost, and by then its already too late..

lol......i look up to you nony and see your point but bad comparisons most have body guards and/or security around their homes and several did not "get by", assassinations?
If Bashiok gets assassinated I'm totally not posting on the new bnet.

Given your outdated Myspace information, I can make the correct calls and inquires to trace your movements. You have old landlords, old bills, and old contacts. Once you relocate your trail does not disappear.
I have to butt in and say that this guy is not bullshitting and is completely correct. I have no idea if he is actually capable of doing such things, but I have a police cruiser sitting 100 feet away in my driveway with a computer set up to login to several national, as well as most of the statewide databases.
It's not hard to find out where you are.

I should have the option of AT LEAST blocking out my name so it says SXXXXXCXXXXX s and c being my initials, and the rest of my name is blocked out. Not doing so is invasion of privacy - simple. Not giving users the choice one way or the other is wrong. Those of you who can't understand that I think are beyond hope.
You're not forced. You willingly post on the forums knowing that your name will be revealed. Forum is a privilege, not a right.

All the people defending blizzard for this have still yet to give a single good reason for this change.

Trust me I was off the grid for almost a year. There is a dead end based off that info.
But anyways yeah my current city is listed in the TL Community thread and my real name is here. The world has gotten too paranoid. In fact you can gain more info from me by walking into my work and spending 5 minutes talking to me. I give out my full name, city & main crossroads where i live, and if asked will tell you the make of my car.
You can spend your whole life in fear or spend your life living life. I prefer the second.

Yeah it really surprises me that people here don't understand that some have access to databases not available to the general public, and can use them to find out a lot of information based on a name.
Luckily for them, it seems like the people who can find the info on TL aren't asshole enough to do it just to prove a point. To think that this applies to everyone, however, is just naive.

Saw the front page of reddit, immediately came running here, and wow. 59 pages before I could even post.
34 on the blizz forums. Hornet's nest stirred much?
But seriously. Faceboook was nearly forgivable. This... this is not.
Though it's not like anyone here uses the blizz forums for much other than laughter, but this is just... wrong.

Its true, that it doesn't happen frequently, I will concede that point. However the fact is that it does occur. The world is a dangerous place with sociopaths who will kill you for killing one too many scvs if given the chance. Why allow these rare individuals more tools to locate their potential victims? Why allow a future employer to see information that you would not like to have at their fingertips? You are supporting Blizzard in this yet I have yet to see you raise a valid point in thread. Speak now or concede you do not have a valid point to raise: If this system is implemented how is it beneficial to the STarcraft II community?
Edit: Yes. I am a Biology Major(Intrigued with cellular biology at the moment). It's beneficial because it raises quality by raising accountability. It's the first thing I said!
Trolls are the people most likely to give a false name when they create their battle.net accounts. Therefore this does nothing to raise their accountability. Got anything else?

Cause it's making gaming personal. Which is a good thing in my eyes. It's a lot easier to befriend Kenny Roberts than "Madgodghostfacedbabykiller420187"

I know quite a few woman that could care less and some that would. It all depends on how you live your life. When your time comes it comes why spend all my time worrying about absolutely bat shit ways it can happen or I can go have fun and debate with ppl on TL. The TL thing is WAY more fun.

It will stop spamming? And trolling?
The Bnet forums will be a useful, professional place instead of a cess-pool of angry or mean people?
Maybe? I dunno. It's an experiment.
EDIT: And it's soooooo much more expensive/burdensome to have a crew of people employed purely to ban trolls. And it's a PR nightmare.

There is no dichotomy there. You do not have to live in fear to take easy precautions. I have a very common name so it would be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack but that is really irrelevant.
Being cautious is not being paranoid.

Benefits in theory are less trolls, less spam/etc because you are more accountable for what you say. People tend to be a lot more real if they aren't hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

How about your medical and legal information? Maybe you wouldn't even care about those, but a lot of others might. It's not hard to think of a scenario where you can completely fuck someone over by releasing that information. And believe it or not, there are gamers who can get that info. And don't think all of those people are going to be mature or responsible (although they should be).

No this is the definition of paranoid. You are worried about the following scenario happening.
1: You piss off someone on the b.net forums. Not TL or PA just on b.net (which is like 1 out of 200000000000000 forums). Odds are already pretty low.... 2: They have enough computer skills to find some info about you on the internet. 3: They are smart enough to run a background check or dig REALLY deep to find personal info. 4: Travel from possibly ANYWHERE in the world to your town. 5: Find you 6: Hurt you.
Yeah I might want to talk to a mat guy but I thin I have a better odds of hitting the lotto.
