In all seriousness though, I wouldn't put a fake name on my account, there's really no point for me to do this. It's like fixing a water leak with duct tape - seems convenient and fixes the problem temporarily but it just feels flimsy and not right.
What should happen is for Blizzard, whom I trusted with this personal information when I created my account, to not then go and tell everyone what my real name is!
EDIT: I love my name!

For example, if you ever have a billing dispute, or need to verify your account to reclaim it (if it was hacked, or if you need any info changed that does not don't have direct access to it). For WoW players with credit card infos for monthly payments its even more complicated. Here's the thing though, this only matters if you play WoW (and Diablo 3 when it comes out). For Starcraft 2 it's a great temporary solution. Personally, I'll be making a new Bnet account on the 27th, with a fake name, just for SC2. If my account for some reason gets hacked, then it won't matter at all, all I lose is a ladder record. Besides which, as long as you remember the fake name you use, and answers to any security questions they set, you can verify it just fine for reclamation. It's not like they ask for your SSN or anything.
When the hacker is able to get your Bnet password its not that hard to get the Email pass too and then your lose is not just your ladder record but the full cost of Starcraft2 and all games you connected to the Account.

Again, that would happen the same way whether I have my real name on my account or not. You can recover an account with a fake name just as easily as a real name, and the same goes for an e-mail account. If you lose them both to a hacker, chances are you lost other stuff as well, which means having to shell out 60 bucks for a new copy of SC2 is pretty far down on your list of concerns at that point.

Actually, its not that bad. Way back in SC1 my account got hacked or my CD key got out (keygen?). I called up Blizzard and told them and they issued me a new key and cancelled the old one. I did have to read a number printed into the CD (not the CD key), so don't lose your disk.

Silly mods! Real names are for realID!
More constructively:
Personally, I've been constructively posting on the Blizzard forums for years (since the days of Starcraft 1 and the original battle.net). However, if my name is going to used as my posting alias, I just won't feel comfortable enough to post there anymore. It's sad, because I really enjoyed being a part of that community.
The worse part is that Blizzard had another method of fixing this. You probably already know this, but battle.net accounts will now encompass all (future) battle.net games. Meaning, they could have just let us designate that account with an alias and allow us to use that in lieu of our real names. Players would have remained diligent because new battle.net accounts would require a 60$ minimum (the cost of a new game) and their identities would have remained protected.
I don't know, I think the initiative to combat trolling is a good one. I really do. However, I think that this is not the right way to go about it. I mean some people won't mind posting with their real names, and they should have the option to do so... but don't force it onto a large proportion of your community who isn't comfortable with it.
Blizzard, you've always been MY gaming company. Throughout the years, there have been good and bad ideas, however you've usually listened to your community on the bad ones and managed to fix them. Please, don't make this an exception to that rule. Come up with an alternative.
You don't promote free speech and intelligent discussion by imposing constant surveillance. This whole thing feels like something out of 1984 to me. Like I said, I understand the reasoning behind it (actually I agree with the reasoning behind it) but I definitely don't agree with these means, especially considering an alternative is available.

I think TLO hit the spot once again as to why using real names on a forum is really bad ...
There are MANY "John Smiths" out there, so if you are mad at one of them you will confuse him with others. Your alias however is unique and you can identify exactly as to which "John Smith" (or rather ESPORTS for Starcraft 2) you are mad about. I hadnt thought about it and the folks at Blizzard probably havent either.
Hmmm, why am I showing up as "Alexander Lawson"?

btw, this thread is not long enough!

In discussion with some of my friends, it's apparent that there's a great divide between people who don't care about this, and people who think it's a bad idea. I haven't actually found anyone who thinks it's a good move. Anyway, the disconnect I have noticed is that the people who don't care usually have big facebook pages, share their names freely over the net, and have never run into a problem with privacy or the like.
I just want to stress to people with that opinion, that just because it is not a problem for you, does not mean it's not a problem for anyone. I myself am an Engineer, and I absolutely do not want coworkers or potential employers to be able to google me and find out that I'm a gamer. In my field, that information has to be controlled. In my previous job, after working there for just a couple weeks, it was apparent that I could share my gaming habit with only one of my coworkers. The others, I never wanted them to find out, because it was apparent their opinion would not be a positive one, and it would impact the working relationship. They were clearly the sort of people that have the stigma that gaming is for kids, and I am sure they would have looked down on me on the job because of it. I am also sure that many potential employers would immediately reject me just because I am a gamer.
Now, obviously this is not how it should be, and in an ideal world there would be no problem at all with me stating loud and proud that I'm a gamer. But we do not live in an ideal world, and that appears to be hard for some people to accept. Please remember, just because it doesn't happen to you, that doesn't mean it happens to nobody.

Whoa, why is everybody's name showing up in this thread?

There are thousands of "Johns" playing, so what would it help accomplish? Basically nothing and only the "akaanonymous" would be the identifying part. So we are kinda have to go back to using our UNIQUE online alias with name.identifier.

Sup?
What? I get some lame generic hispanic name?

I'm quite tempted to take whatever name I get on here and sign up my BNet account with it.
Edit: Now I see how unoriginal I am with that idea. I need to read more carefully.

Excuse me if it's already been spoken about, but Bashiok's personal info is spreading like wildfire.

I've actually already been stalked online. Three times over five years and none of them were people I knew in real-life. Of the three two were relatively harmless, but one was a real threat and I had to get in touch with his ISP to complain about him before he stopped.
People can downplay the threat all they like but it is real.
Edit: Haha, Thomas it is!
