the 3rd place match has always(?) been a bo5. or at least for the last couple of seasons. guess the korean viewers arent interested in the 3rd place match that much

Seems kinda weird to play a Bo7 to get into the round of 4 but then play only a Bo5 to figure out who gets third, especially since it's the only set of the day

in sports often 3rd/4th-place-matches are regarded as a match that nobody wants. in some competitions it gets dropped completely.
I think Bo5 is a good solution.

actually that's not entirely true.. in World Championship or Olympic competition, game for 3rd place is sometimes even more hard thought than the Final.. everyone agrees that better to get a medal than to get top 4 and leave with nothing.

Let me introduce you to the match-up of Terran versus Terran.

HAH! What is the estimated time of BO7 TvT? Is one day enough?

What a trash series, really...

I thought about that.. first blush looks off but actually makes perfect sense imo.. ro4 basically decides who is 1st/2nd place those more important than a match that decides who is 3rd

Because often times you actually win the 3rd place match (if it's a tournament not a race, for example) but you lose the final.. so 3rd place ends tournament with a win while 2nd place end with a loss.

didn't say it's in all sports, but in most there is only semi-finals and finals: NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. Tennis Grand Slams, Football Champions League, European Championship...
I think 3rd place match is cool, keep it, but Bo5 is fine.

i've got poor memory so this has and will continue to surprise me twice a year loool, but the resulting discussion has been eye opening! i think i agree that Bo5 is fine for 3rd place match. i hope hero feels redeemed after getting 4-0'd.

Lets not forget 4th gets significantly less price money than 3rd. I'm a very pragmatic person and to me money is a bigger factor than a title unless the trophy opens doors for me. I'd imagine if for some odd reason 3rd got a trophy but no money while 4th got money but no trophy, then people would likely be happier about placing 4th. Except for people who already have more than enough money.

Right, in any tourney, third place definitely feels better than second.
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/thoughtful-animal/why-bronze-medalists-are-happier-than-silver-winners/
As with most social psychology, this is pretty straightforward common sense when you think about it. Second place is like "nooooo i was sooo close. If only I didn't screw up that one push/harass/tiny but critical mistake which will haunt me forever...that would have been me kissing the trophy..." Whereas third is like, "meh who cares, it's not the finals or anyth--woohoo I won lolz, let's get drunk now kekeke".
