Some people would simply not play on a team that wasn't with their friends. Other teams have crumbled because of a lack of unifying factor outside of the team. In general, it is common sense that people who want to play together on a team will put more effort into the team and therefore the league. For example, people make Skype channels that they frequently check, or are in similar timezones. They are more likely to practice together, discuss strategies, etc. The free agent team idea really is suboptimal; if the team in question has already overcome some hurdles and created one they think will work, all the more power to them. Sure, it seems stacked, but if it is indeed a tiered system then it doesn't matter THAT much. And remember, they are less likely to have good organization or proper unifying factors like some of the established teams have. Never underestimate the power of teamwork and communication. If Teamliquid has shown anything, it's that people will always whine about balance  | ||

One thing you have to consider is some of the teams have been for awhile so there are often built in practice partners in complementary timezones. (Mind you, neither of these look hopeful this time due to Brit and Kiwi times vs PST and the others I practiced with are either not playing or else are on other teams, but the point stands for the most part.) Furthermore, some captains recruit quite a bit. For instance, Birdie is always finding people to join the low level leagues as evidenced by our D and D- player roster. (Actually, he was the one that convinced me to join the DRTL.) However, those players are most likely (at least at first) to want to play for the one that brought them in first place- the recruiter is their connecting point into the tournament. Although maybe we will need some team trades if one team is too heavily C with no D's and another team is too heavily D and D- with no C's. (Salary cap if you will.) ...less to do with fairness and more that every team can field players in every tier. | ||

Also, I keep telling teams that they are hurting themselves by recruiting only C or C+ players. You still have to field D ranks every week. You can't substitute down a rank. Just food for thought when you guys are recruiting players. | ||
