Combat shield isn't that big of a difference if Protoss had reavers and BW storm and terrans had BW tanks and vultures marines would have still been limited to TvZ only .

Dropships are used in BW as well and MMF in BW gave you complete map control until defilers were out . Map control depended on the micro vs Muta/lurker + ling , but now zergs have it because of creepsread and no early medics ... They are not more mobile then BW marines especially in the early game . Not to mention that it was a lot harder to drop against zergs do to scourge .
So it's not that marines became super good in SC2 it's more like everything else became worser then the BW counterparts .

The problem is that CH had no upgrades for his blords, it didn't make sense for him to go full air, and even if he had, very few vikings are always better than 20 because of transitions and the fact that they are pretty bad vs infestor/corruptor, I've seen mass vikings vs zerg air lose infinitely more than win.

pvp is ridiculous, all about composition/mechanics and very little actual micro involved. Losing 2 immortals by itself was enough to lose the match.
edit: And yes, taking them back was not the right move. He had observers, I didn't see if he saw the army move out, but he should have.

What do you do with mechanics then? Queue probes?
Losing 2 immortals and a warp prism in any matchup means a good chance you lose.

I think they are actually stronger in sc2, in dont know what it is but I need more lings to deal with them than I did in bw. I know lings are weaker, but i feel as if the marines are stronger too.
