Hello ladies and gentlemen,
Today I am unveiling the latest addition of my tournament spree, the LRM) Island Tournament. You didn't read wrong, it is an island map tournament. There is nothing more entertaining to watch than close micro games, and that is exactly what island maps force. Without further ado, the details:
Time and Place: Saturday April 30th, 2011 at 19CET/1PM EDT at op LRM) on iCCup.
Prizepool: $75 1st: $40 2nd: $20 3rd: $10 4th: $5
Format: 32 players, single elimination, island maps. Any match with more than one game is loser picks an island map. Round of 32: Best of 1 Round of 16: Best of 1 Round of 8: Best of 3 Semifinals: Best of 3 Finals: Best of 5
Map Pool: Round of 32: Gorky Island Round of 16: Symmetry of Psy Round of 8: Neo Forbidden Zone Semifinals: Crimson Isles Finals: Island Hop
Rules: By signing up for this tournament, you by default agree to these rules and the consequences that come with breaking them. + Show Spoiler + 1) No Korean IP's. 2) All games must be played on iCCup AntiHack. 3) All games must be played on /dnd mode. 4) All matches must be played on Island Maps. 5) All replays must be submitted to the referee before starting the next round. 6) You cannot play the same map twice.
All players are subject to administrative discretion. This tournament will be casted by none other than the amazing Sayle. And finally, where to sign up:

In representation of this tournament, I wish all players good luck and all voyeurs a good time.
Highlights:
1. There are some players who think it is a requirement to make capital ships to win on Island Maps. Despite looking like he is about to be steamrolled and gay'd, Joekim comes back with mass Scourges from 5 gases to kill all of his opponent's Carriers, Scouts, and Corsairs. 2. This Terran plays Gorky Island like it is Lost Temple. He uses his scouting Barracks for support against the Shuttle in addition to landing a Siege Tank and two Vultures. 3. This Protoss goes for a good old fashion Photon Cannon rush on Gorky Island. 4. Semih showing us who is boss with an epic Zealot Spider Mine drag. 5. JoeKim using two wraiths to hunt for enemy shuttles, obviously showing he brainstormed how he would play on Island Maps. 6. JoeKim spreading out his Wraiths across the minimap for a contain on Neo Forbidden Zone. 7. A Terran decides to make a couple Valkyries for help against Mutalisks since he already has the necessary tech for Goliaths. 8. Another player who thinks making capital ships is a prerequisite in doing well on Island Maps. The Battlecruisers and Valkyries are not only Plagued but then Scourged to be finished off. 6 gas Scourges are a force to be reckoned with. The Terran had upgraded Yamato Cannon to kill the Nydus Canals. 9. A Zerg showing a fancy Scourge contain on this minimap, with two scourges spread out to two-hit kill any Shuttle. 10. Bakuryu nearly ends Karate's impressive Wraith harass when he Ensnares and destroys every single one of Karate's twelve Wraiths. Karate showed Leta-like micro vs Zerg the entire tournament. 11. Bakuryu makes 4 Nydus Canals so he can get to all of his expansions in a hurry. 12. Bakuryu laters uses the same Queen to negate the stimpack of Karate's M&M followup. 13. Karate takes the "Island" out of Island Map and replays it with Air Map. Karate uses Wraiths to punish Bakuryu's lack of anti air. 14. Bakuryu finally ends Karate's impressive Wraith harass when he Plagues Karate's control group of 11 Wraiths. 15. Bakuryu this time Plagues two control groups of stacked Wraiths later in the same game. 16. In one of the finals games, Karate nearly forces a stalemate when he turtles on an Island and denies Semih's expansions with his Mutalisks. 17. Karate goes on to snipe one of Semihs last two Shuttles and the pylon powering Semih's Robotics Bay. Semih had kept 200 minerals for another Shuttle incase his last one got sniped, however Semih would now not be able to afford another Shuttle. 18. Semih uses his last Shuttle to elevator mining probes back and forth. Karate harasses these probes to guarantee a stalemate. Semih at the time only had 200 minerals, not enough to expand with a Nexus. Karate had every one of his expansions hunted down until he was able to turtle on an Island and go Mutalisks. 19. Karate exploit Semih's lack of Shuttles to expand onto another Island off of the connects parts of the map. 20. Semih tries in vain to break into Karate's island. Semih lost the above mentioned finals game but wen't on to win the Island Map Tournament.

Question for clarification - will the Bo3's and Bo5's all be played on the same map, or will maps played in previous rounds be included?

YO GUYS!!! You are the best! On russian forum we've been many times discussing how modern SC lacks this piece of nostalgy that island maps are. I'll surely repost these news on our site. And screw all those balance discussions - with the current "forgotten" state of island strategy, any race can win. 
erm... does that mean that all 3 games of ro8/ro4, and all 5 (!) games (ZOMG) of final should be played on one map? Or what? Please maybe you post the map order for each stage? For example like this

Maybe it would be useful to post a link to an island map pack in the OP? Soujiro_ already linked the starting maps, but you did say the loser could pick any island map.

Zerg Island Tournament Primer
*You can use Hydralisks and burrow and unburrow to surprise and intercept enemy drops. A Queen's usefulness increases dramatically on island maps. *Parasite Whereas Terrans can float buildings and use Comsat to scout, Zergs can not use ground units to scout like on normal maps. Past a point in the game, sending Overlords out to scout is difficult. A Zerg can parasite enemy Dropships and Shuttles to know exactly when and where an enemy drop will take place. Alternatively, the Zerg can parasite an important enemy unit that they would be unlikely to suicide. Keep in mind that you can use Parasite continously every 75 seconds, which is comparable in usefulness to an Observer. *Ensnare Since it is much more likely your opponent will go Wraiths, you may want a Queen anyway to Ensnare those Wraiths and counter their cloak. Keep in mind that Ensnare will negate the effects of Stimpack if your opponent does a Marine followup after the Wraiths. You can use Ensnare to help you chase down enemy Dropships and Shuttles. You can us ensnare to help you chase down enemy air units. At the least, with nothing else to do, you could ensnare your opponents mineral line who may be playing off only one base. *Spawn Broodling Furthermore, you may use the Queen to Spawn Broodling any Siege Tanks or HTs. As island matches are longer, you will likely be able to use Spawn Broodling more than once. *The usefulness of a late game Nydus Canal network increases dramatically on island maps. *Zergs can slow drop expand to save money, instead of researching Overlord Speed. *Zergs are punished the longer the game is.

There will be a referee. Any map that your starting base is an island - is an island map, even if there is a non-island part to it. When I am back from school I'll look into throwing a map pack together.

As this tournament is taking off tomorrow, the sponsor and myself, the organizer have been banned from the iCCup webpage via abuse by the famous abuser cheloman (see: banning of Oldy, ret, IdrA).

I have posted under another name that surely will be banned for "You know why" (so legit and professional - clearly a person who should have power) in the Tournaments forum on iCCup to have the ownership of the tournament moved to this name and or one of the other tournament admins, as the player list needs to be edited and the brackets need to be produced, as well as maintenance during the tournament. Also in the turn of these events, iCCup has taken a duty upon itself to add an iCCup admin to the administrator list of the tournament. How convenient.

Update: Another account banned with the explanation "Same than other", as he explains in a thread that I was banned this time for accusing him of abuse. But originally I accused this stupid fuck of abuse for the original ban, so it's physically impossible that the reason I was banned originally was for accusing him of abuse. This Karate vs Bakuryu game was pretty crazy. I wish (semi-)island maps made a reappearance in the korean leagues too, this tournament showcases some pretty unique and oldschool play, a lot of fun to watch.

Well Zerg definitely will not be winining the tournament, though it would be cool if you got some mapmakers to make some good island maps before the tournament, because a lot of the maps in the map pool definitely are not balanced at all. But really nice idea, hosting a tournament with island maps =D. Would it be nice to possibly favor ZvZ in the brackets for the first round on the island maps?

@Quasar- I saw you reposted this tournament on reps.ru site. Thanks! Please post whatever ideas Russians at that site have for the #2 Island Map Tournament. There seems to be alot of love for island maps there.
Also, what maps would people like to see in the #2 Island Map Tournamnet?
@All & CaucasianAsian- I am leaning towards Gorky Island, Halls of Valhalla, Estrella, Dire Straits, and Island Hop. I think it would be unforgiving to not pay those maps their respect since they are all so unforgetable.

Island Map Guide
-=Zerg on Island Maps=- *Can research Burrow for Drones to avoid enemy drops. *Can research Burrow for Hydralisks on Island Maps for unburrowing and surprising enemy Shuttle Drops. *Multiple Nydus Canals are required in the late game on Island Maps. * Dark Swarm helps dramatically while attacking Islands. *Plague is good against Capital Ships. *Zergs can Parasite Dropships and Shuttles or expensive enemy units the enemy is less likely to suicide. *Ensnare helps chase down Wraiths and Corsairs. You can Ensnare those units and then run-by them and go do your drop. You can also ensnare Carriers and Battle Cruisers to chase them down. Ensnare also negates Marine's Stim Pack's effects. Ensnare is very good in conjunction with Lurker drops when dropping enemy worker lines. You may want Queens and Spawn Broodlings if you are against High Templars with Psionic Storm. *If a Zerg goes mass Mutalisks versus a Protoss, if he can make it to Hive Tech, Devourers should help significantly in beating Corsairs. In fact, Devourers may make Corsairs obsolete altogether since Devourers are so effective. *Zergs need to double expand in the early game to hold their own with gas. Kind of like Sauron Zerg mass expansion style. *Hydralisk + 1 attack upgrade should be preferred over +1 defense for intercepting enemy drops. *You may want to send Drones early to potential future expos, and then burrow them there, since it may be difficult in getting Overlords (with drones) there later. *In ZvP, two Lair Hydralisk Drop rush is a viable strategy. (Nicknamed "Twin Lairs") A second Lair will give you a time advantage where you get both Overlord upgrades quicker and can expand quicker. A second Lair only costs 100 extra gas but allows for a quicker first expansion. On maps like Halls of Valhalla, Dire Straits, and Island Hop, where slow drop expand isn't an option, two Lairs may be a better option. *In ZvT, again a two Lair Lurker drop rush is a viable strategy. (Nicknamed "Twin Lairs") A second Lair will give you a time advantage where you get both Overlord upgrades quicker and can expand quicker. A second Lair only costs 100 extra gas but allows for a quicker first expansion. On maps like Halls of Valhalla, Dire Straits, and Island Hop, where slow drop expand isn't an option, two Lairs may be a better option. BESIDES, Lurkers are good against a Terran who goes Wraith because the Terran foregoes an Academy+Comsat Scanner. *One opening possibility for Zerg is to make both a Hydralisk Den and Spire. The Spire is only for four or so Scourges to scourge Shuttles and maybe Corsairs, while the Hydra Den is for Hydralisks to counter any possible Zealot drop. *Excess minerals can be spent on an extra Sunken or Spore Colony to slow down Zealot or Reaver drops or Marines & Medics, Goliaths, Vultures, or Wraiths. *Hydra Range first before Hydra Speed will help better defend against Corsairs. This will allow your overlords and overlord drops to stay alive longer. *If you have say 20 Scourges versus 4 Battle Cruisers, the proper way to micro is to do the "Divine Wind" method: One group of four scourges are sent ahead to get one-shot killed, while four groups of four Scourges all are split and kill one Battle Cruiser each. On Island Maps, Zergs with mass expansions can pump mass scourges. *Knowing how to Doom Drop is important. *Reavers excell in not only killing drones but also expansion Hatcheries when the attack upgrade is done, which changes from 25 to 125 damage. *Queens & Devourers vs. Protoss air is a crazy-good combination. Ensnare can allow you to chase down the enemy units. Ensnare reduces the rate of fire of Corsairs by 10%. Any Interceptors Ensnared won't attack. Each Devourer's Acid Spore increases a unit's cooldown by 12.5% while also for each Acid Spore the unit takes one extra damage per attack. Finally a few Devourers at 250 health may be used with Overlord sight upgrade to snipe enemy Observers while your Lurkers rampage.
-=Terran on Island Maps=- *Old school Goliath Drops with +1 attack upgrade for use against enemy drops. *In TvZ, maybe always make at least one wraith for scouting and harassing. The Starport will be needed for mass Dropships eventually anyways. *In TvP, mid to late game, a Terran may want some Wraiths to attack-move chase down Shuttles. In the early game, they would be killed by Dragoons. Also, Wraiths can snipe enemy Observers to kill Carriers while Cloaked. *In TvP, if both players are equal, the game will progress to massive air on air battles with victory fleets. The Protoss won't be able to break-into the Terran without Carriers. One Terran might turtle with abundant cheap Turrets, ranged Goliaths, Spider Mines, and Sieg Tanks. The Protoss might turtle with ranged Dragoons and other tech surrounding his base's periphery. *In TvZ, two Starport Wraiths is a very viable strategy which will give you air dominance and also give you map control on Islands where scouting is more difficult. Wraith micro wasn't as refined back in 2005 when Island Maps were last played. Two Starport Wraiths would of course be followed up with Two Starport Dropships with mass Marines & Medics. *In TvZ, Mechanical play may be worse than Bionic play because Hydralisks do increased explosive damage against Mech units. *Terrans may want to lay Spider Mines where they think the enemy will drop or recall at. They may place Spider Mines near Turrets incase a Turret luckily kills a Shuttle and the Shuttle unloads units shortly before dying. *Maybe twin academies (two academies) for rushing super fast Marine Range and Marine Stimpack would be fun to try. *Knowing how to Dropship micro is important. *In TvP, because you are map blind in the early game of an Island Map, you may want to make a fast Academy + Comsat Scanner + small Bionic force in the early game.
-=Protoss on Island Maps=- *Old school four Zealot Drop rush is a possibility. *You can Hallucinate Arbiters for Recall. *Maybe can make shield Batteries for use with harassing using Reavers, Shuttles, and Corsairs since one has to make due with less gas intensive units on Island Maps. *Several observers should be made since less scouting can be done on Island Maps. *Arbiter's Recall ability, possibly with Hallucinated Arbiters, remains a possibility. If it is a small island, a player may attempt to use his workers to partially block the recall by pulling the workers away from a worker line to intercept the recall. *In PvZ, the main build order possibilities are Reaver/Corsair or Robo/HT & DT/Corsair. *In PvT, if both players are equal, the game will progress to massive air on air battles with victory fleets. The Protoss won't be able to break-into the Terran without Carriers. One Terran might turtle with abundant cheap Turrets, ranged Goliaths, Spider Mines, and Sieg Tanks.
