I havent followed any of the visa discussions, but it is really bad that players can't attend the computer game olympics because of these problems.

Blame the WCG folks for hosting it here. I know the USA isn't helping, but WCG either didn't check into the visa situation or just didn't care.

WCG China is to blame. It takes a while to get a visa approval for a person from China. Blame those bitches

There are probably 800 million Chinese that would like to enter the USA on visa and never go home. The government of China is responsible for creating such conditions.

And it's not like the rules sprang up over night. WCG China should have put more thought into applying for special case visas sooner than it did.

This has never been a problem for any other country. Look at different sports event and you will see that USA is particulary protective eventhough other countries are equally attractive.

That's idiotic... and most of the guys who were denied a visa probably don't give a shit about visiting the USA, WCG just happens to be there and they are being treated like some imigrant wannabes.

not sure about usa policies on visas, i know they are strict but surely if you apply early enough and your going for wcg for a couple of days you would get the visa.

no point in distributing blame anyways. either way usa turned out not to be the best choice.

amat, it's accepted that the US has a higher income per citizen and greater opportunities than China at the moment, but quality of life is definitely not measured by who gets more money. just because there are lots of people that would love to immigrate the US, it's mainly for economic aspects rather than the fact that the US is "better" for life. you are not someone to measure that. my parents are extremely successful in America but would trade all of that (if they didn't have me to support and raise) for living with their relatives back in China. please don't presume that all other countries' citizens are jealous of the US and that you have any sort of superiority just because you live in a rich country.

also, WCG China can't apply for visas until they know who is going.

He did not say that... He said that their are very many ppl who would like to enter USA and never leave, not for what reasons (fairly obvious these would not be because the ppl in USA are in any way "better" than those in china, just economical reasons, surley).

Anyway, I don't think it is fair to for the 100000 time say: "it's americas fault!!!! bitch country!!" etc. I think their immigrant policies are very good, it is good that they are strict and they need to be for obvious reasons: it is the country of oppertunity like it or not, of course ppl wanna live there if they barley can survive in their own country and so on.

In short, this problem should have been anticipated and solved before any problems even occured.

I think there should be another way to pay for the fun for crying out loud. Maybe the americans should've just made a system where you can only pay with dollars sent in in a letter which has to have an american stamp on it! That would've rocked even more. Maybe they'll learn something about this and see that WCG shouldn't be hosted in some lil' "island" in the middle of the ocean!
River me timbers.

I remember, back in WCG '01, when they had the online prelims, they told EVERYONE participating, that if they thought they had a shot at placing top 3, to go ahead and apply for a passport, and visa to korea. This was months in advance.

I still strongly stand on my ' WCG should only be held in Korea ' ideal. Although you could argue that it helps spread awareness [ As I'm sure this WCG will (--v) ] I just don't see any country in the world [ Including Europe ] being able to host such a thing with organization.

The EU has policies very similar to the USA, for many of the same reasons as the USA.

Each year millions of people apply for visa applications to EU countries. Each year millions of applications are denied.

I just googled visa application requirements to visit Germany.

Here you will find a list of countries that Germany and the EU require have visas: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/www/en/willkommen/einreisebestimmungen/liste_html

Somewhere in here you will find details on the numbers of visa approvals and denials: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/www/en/willkommen/einreisebestimmungen/visumangelegenheiten_html

The USA and the EU do not have the infrastructure to support all the potential visitors.

The visa approval process in the USA for China applicants is like a lottery. Several million apply; (I think) only several hundred thousand are granted.

There are a numerous ways the applicants can increase their odds of winning that lottery. The applicant's first priority is to convince the person reviewing the application that they should allow him visit over another.

1. Apply well in advanced (6-12 months) of your visit. This gives you the opportunity to re-file if you application is denied. The more times you try; the more likely you are to win a visa.

2. Find a sponsor family in the USA. Basically the sponsor family sends a letter to the consulate or embassy that says 'we will give the visitor housing and food and take them to their flight at the end of their stay in the USA'.

3. Find a corporate sponsor. A letter from a company like Samsung USA would be great. WCG and WCG USA could also send in letters to let the consulate or embassy know that the visitor will have accomodations, food, and travel taken care of during their stay here, if needed.

4. Ask the SF mayor's office for help. An email or fax from the mayor's office would do wonders for an applicant's application. The mayor's office is very friendly - give them a call.

Even if all that were to happen (and it may have happened) the application may still be denied. Perhaps the applicant has a family member currently in the USA that has overstayed his visa.

None of us know why the application was rejected. It's a shame it was. It's still not too late to try the above.

on that page about german visas they don't say which percentage of the short-stay visa applications were denied.

a) Number of short-stay visas (transit, visits, business, tourism) issued by German missions in 2002: 2.203.028 (2001: 2.349.724)

(b) Number of visas issued by German missions for longer stays and stays intended for gain-ful employment in 2002: 394.423 (2001:399.975)

(c) Number of visa applications refused by German missions in writing in 2002: 3.037.315 (2001: 3.232.626)

(d) Total number of applications processed by German missions in 2001: 3,232,626 (2000: 3,051,054)

the numbers are confusing and partially wrong i think (the number of refused visa equals the number of applications processed in 2001 T_T) but oviously there is no information about how many short-stay visas were denied (the total number is probably wrong and even if not it is only the total number for long-term visas).

come on... that is a very stupid suggestion for wcg players. They are supposed to know 6 ~ 12 months beforehand that they will qualify for WCG??? WCG should have thought of this and have something ready in case things like this happen.

If ur a likely winner applying in advance is a reasonable idea in most nations ~ problem is that filing fees are prohibitve for many chinese ~ like a month wage in semi rural china, and half a month in urban china.

not apply in 6 months. GG. Any rejection before will also decrease your chance to get the visa.

Even if all that were to happen (and it may have happened) the application may still be denied. Perhaps the applicant has a family member currently in the USA that has overstayed his visa.

Or just pure bad luck. Like the other 800 million ppl we have here.

PJ knew he was the favorite to win by a large margin. Seems logical that he could have applied before he won to increase his chances.

Even so, Pj was probably just keeping his modesty, think about it, if you had gone through all the troubles to obtain an visa but only to lose in the final? then what? you would be stuck with a visa but no money or reason to go... BW is very unpredicable...

Its just retarded to suggest you should apply for a visa before you are qualified. I bet one stupid customs agent who is 64 years old with an old communist grudge who has no kids just denied everyone a visa. Finally he got to feel important.

I agree that it is unfortunate, but i feel that it was a mistake of the WCG. Its not as if the US just changed their visa policies. The WCG should have thought about it. Yes the visa policy is a bitch, but there isn't anything that can be done.

PJ should apply for a sanctuary visa.

The US isn't scared of terrorism from the Chinese or anything like that. Too many foreigners sneak over and become illegal. This includes a lot of nations, and that's why they're careful about it.There are many stories of Chinese people straying from a group with a B type visa or some tourist visa. I think some countries actually make a lot of tourists put down collateral or make sure they have a certain amount of money in a bank.

Ban him for saying he doesn't trust a country and it's people?
Interestingly if this applied to people's comments about the usa you'd have to ban most of this forum.

It's still not too late to try the above.

wow it's one of the first time i actually see you posting something intelligent and useful gratz ^^ you are on the way :D

Oh and the bottom line is that the US is known for being difficult to travel to and it's a pity that this wasn't foreseen because there are some good players who will likely not be able to participate as a result. Pointing fingers accomplishes nothing because these are just unchangable circumstances that WCG will have to learn to deal with in the future.
