1) play macro game, fly around him, dont let him expand. Dont go ultralisk. Go muta ling. Try to punish his vision of the map in any way possible. Get ovy speed later on. Maybe some ling drops in bases with spores but little or no sunkens.

2) Go hydra-ling. Wich i dont recommend, but sometimes works if he is not expecting it.

everything Chill said was correct. I would just like to add that in late game, guards would certainly be viable - especially on a map like LT. You wouldn't even need many, enough to kill spores/harass from cliffs. I have never had a guard vs hydra battle in sufficient numbers, but my gut feeling is that if you had a decent amount of guards with mutas you'd do pretty well vs hydra.

and yes, +1 air armor is your friend.

e: i assumed you were playing on lt, my mistake

People...theres no reason the game should ever make it to hive tech=/

Try playing hydra sometime against muta ZvZ and you'll see what we mean. You are so impossibly immobile if you try going hydra ZvZ that it really shuts down any semblance of map control you might have.
What fun is it being cool if you can’t wear a sombrero?

But if your opponent slacks in his muta production at all, you have a very good chance of being able to overpower him immediately as your 2-2 hits if you just mass up hydras. It's not foolproof, but if you're behind on tech and you have an early expo, hydras are a better way to catch up than spore colonies.

Well you have to make spore colonies even when going hydras so that doesnt really make sense

But the difference between evo chamber hydras with an expo over an opponent is that you don't need a lair to do it.

Chill said it all only I would like to add that its great to add a lurker tech of your own. Preferably you should hide the tech and have around 6-8 lurkers on hold waiting for his attack after that big of a rape the game is yours.

Additionally going hive tech yourself is fine. If hes hardcore upgraded hydra/lurk or hive tech himself get guardians or plague/swarm/ling or even ultra. Chill was wrong about hydras being the counter to ultras, Mutas are. Ultra/swarm versus hydralisks is very onesided and the spitters arent on the good end of that.

Emphasis on the MOBILITY aspect Chill spoke on.. that is why hydra is inferior in ZvZ. Make him throw up a dozen spore colonies just to earn the right to leave his base. At this point you need to be up in tech or expansion. If not you suck and should lose that game and many more.

Woah, that'd be so gosu. Now we need a pro Z to use it in a game. They just gotta hide hydra den/hydras/lurkers and bury them in path.... then AMBUSH! And mutas can get what survives. Although you'd need to be up by at least 1 gas for this too work so you'd be winning most likely already.

hey there
i just played a ZvZ where i did a 1base muta build while my opponent FE'd. the game turned then into muta vs hydra, and as he managed to set up enough defence prevent my muta harass, i teched to ultra/ling because my muta force wouldnt survive an open battle against the hydras.
To the Replay

looking at the replay, at around 7:30 you would've already won if you'd just attacked; hydras get totally raped by mutas if there's less of them. just have your mutas highlighted and hold shift, then right click each hydra one at a time, followed by his drones; you don't really need any flashy gosu muta harrass skills to use mutalisks effectively (although it potentially helps a lot if done correctly)

ignoring the fact that the guy that you played wasn't very good (he should've had a lot more units and/or made spores in response to your spire by that time), you should use the mutalisk's mobility to your advantage and snipe drones, as this totally messes up the enemy zerg player and pretty much can end the game since he's forced to use his larvae to spawn more drones, meaning he won't have enough larvae to make more units, and on top of that he won't be gaining minerals during that time either.

generally, hydras aren't really worth going for in zvz because they aren't very mobile compared to lings and mutas, and they need to be upgraded to be of any real use; you pretty much won't be able to harrass the enemy, and usually, at least when facing a good player, you'll be overrun before you make it to lurkers in time to counter mass lings backed by muta harrass/support

watch some progamer zvz games and also look up JulyZerg mutalisk harrass, and I think you'll learn lots about the mutalisks potential in mobility

i hope i helped in some way.

this ismy advice and its also a question cause im not sure about it
doesnt everything lead to muta battles though? so wouldnt just massing mutalisk>hydras since hydra do only 5 dmg have no splash and have less life? I mean the lurkers wouldnt really matter if all the anti-air (the hydras) just died
Hwaiting!!!

ultralisks are useless in zvz, I think you would be better off with a defiler (plague) and a couple more lings

I'd love to know where I can get that game now. Youtube or crunchyroll preferably?

Speaking of which, its so sad that GGPlay got an OSL before Yellow.
But Garimto was always more than just a Protoss...
