Hey guys in my life I've played about 2 games on BW and after playing SC2 for a while (a good few months anyway as Zerg) I found it wasn't really my sort of thing (with all the cheese/all ins etc) so I'm thinking of going back to BW (I've played one game since my return as Protoss and it lasted nearly an hour is this normal?) and I'm asking you all if there are any sites (aside from liquidpedia) that basically teaches you a build from a complete beginners point of view (like how many drones/probes/scvs needed for base saturation) and how to choose a race and learn a map.
Thanks for reading this rather long post and I hope someone can help,

Chill's recommended threads thread, it is stickied in the BW strategy section. Also there are LOADS of "getting into BW" threads like yours, have a look around.

An hour long game is not normal. But if you and your opponent are complete beginners it is not surprising either.

Oh and welcome.

Now looking through the recommended threads looks like I have a lot of reading to do
Thanks for the warm welcome.
I thought the game took a while but all i was doing was massing goons and getting 3/3 and it was against ai so I thought I suck

Don't forget to check out ImbaTosS' guide for players switching from SC2 and search for other threads of this nature. Not that there's much toss stuff in there at the moment but it's a work in progress!

See that little empty space above the calendar, that's called the search bar. Use it.

we need to welcome all the SC2 refugees.

anyway to the OP. You will not find anything better than Liquipedia. But you cant just read it copy it and understand the game. Check out the replay section here. So many sick games for any matchup. And also, if you can try and get a practice partner or a coach. Makes a big difference.

Yeah definitly best advice would be to check out Liquipedia, learn one build per match up and just play on ONE map to start off. eg. Fighting Spirit, Destination, etc.

I have a question that I think would suit this thread best (as an ignorant Starcraft 2 refugee) and I am in no way trolling or trying to stir up shit, it is just an honest question. How is Brood War doing in terms of popularity? The korean scene seems pretty vibrant still but I am just asking because I don't want to put alot of time into a game (as this wonderful game requires and deserves) only to find out that I am playing a dead horse sometime down the road. I wish I could have gotten into Brood War in my earlier years but there is no changing that.

Edit: Would love to hear a multitude of people's opinions on this. I am speaking about the game in a fairly long-term manner.

I`ve started playing yesterday and games are not missing for me. Just go for ICCup, create your games and play with people with Anti Hack on.

You won't regret. I've lost 80% of my games, but BW is so much fun and rewarding.

How have you started, 1 build per match up and 1 map? Seems kinda daunting, even though I have some RTS experience.

If terran or protoss players new to competitive SC BW want help on how to learn, I think I can help you get a solid foundation. I think it is really hard to learn the game by trial and error at this point. Especially when playing at the D rank on iccup as a D- or E player. I can tell you exactly what to focus on and more importantly, what to ignore. Also I have one of the best practice UMS maps.

If you are interested, PM me.

You will lose a lot. I'm creating games in FS ou Tau Cross only, with only 1 build per race, as toss. In the beginning you will be lost, but you'll se a good difference in a few games. I skipped the part where you go vs AI, cause I hate it. I've done it to learn hotkeys only, and for strategy and builds I'm learning the hard way.

Go to liquipedia, choose one good build for each match up and start having fun. It'll be easy to find games (just create like 1v1 FS D/D-).

On a side note: Terrans are stomping my ass lol It's apparently impossible to do this match up without storm and arbiters.

EDIT: Always remeber to see replay to find what you're lacking in macro, suply block and to learn the general timings. If you can get a good partner it will be even better. People at the op teamliquid channel are really helpful.

I learned Starcraft 2 1 STANDARD build per matchup and I would love to use this method for BW because while encouraging solid mechanic habits it also helps one come to grips with strategy little by little. Can I add you so we can play together (trying to get a bunch of people)? I think I will run those builds versus the AI, my mechanics are pretty decent I would like to think, just need to get it into habit.

Just pm Trv on ICCup.

I live on Brasil, so I don't know if our timezone will influence a lot in the time we play, but we can give a shot. First thing as you go online is /join op teamliquid. I'm not nearly near good, but we can practice together.

And you can't think the mechanics here are as easy as SC2. I can produce scv's and macro all day long in SC2, but BW is way way harder to get used if you're coming from the the modern one.

I agree with the mechanics being a lot harder than SC2 (apparently workers can't auto mine if told to congregate on the mineral patch and the hotkeys are a bit different so taking a while to get used to it) but hit me up on ICCup sometime if you fancy a game my name is sGs.Blood

mG.arb @ iccup if you want to PM me for some games some time.

You need to learn 1 standard build since it should apply to most maps at low level games vs each race
(1gate fe vs terran)
(2gate robo? vs protoss)
(forge fe vs zerg)

And practice your macro(macro is key in BW) and work on your mechanics / multi tasking.

You definitely can't do just one build for all matchups. I don't play toss, but as Terran, siege expand is the best opening in tvp, but if you do siege expand vs zerg, you're dead. Also, Terran bio doesn't work at all in tvp unless you're doing a very early 2 rax rush, which is kind of a cheese build.

Obviously you don't play the same BO each matchup. But there is absolutely no reason why you should know more than 1 BO each matchup.

The only reason why you would play more than one BO anyway is because if you don't your opponents will know beforehand what build you play. But on ladder that isn't true.

There is plenty of reason to know more than one build, especially the higher up the ladder you get. It just doesn't matter so much when you're just starting.

At the higher levels you want to adjust your BOs to the maps. But then still there is no problem with playing just 1 BO. You only need to mix up your play if your opponent gets a read on you. This is the reason for having more than 1 BO.
If you play just 1 or 2 games vs everyone on ladder they can't get a read and you will only be using an inferior BO if you choose to do more than 1.

Now you may change your BO because your opponent has a 'tell'. But that's something else and not D level stuff either.

For clarification, with BO I mean the stuff you do blindly before you can and should scout something.

Please read my post. I said PER MATCHUP and I am of course referring to starting the game as a beginner.
