I haven't played vs P that much, but I'm wondering what the proper counter against a protoss player that goes, let's say, mass archons, if you're playing as any race? Other than the constant harassment of (gas) expansions, I mean. Unit(s) vs Unit(s), what would be the most effective counter? What if he has zeals as support? What if he already has observers?

I think anything with range works well. Despite it's splash, it's still a melee unit and the usual spreading and dancing of units should be used.

in a perfect world, azerg would counter archons with ensnare and hydras .
terran with emp and vults.
protoss, with goon but this depends so much on the situation, archons are good low mineral units.

Archon is not a melee unit, it has a range of 2. Under swarm it misses it's target and it deals only splash damage to units (which is about 15, I don't know how much damage the splash of the archon is precisely). So swarm/ultra/ling works fine vs archon! But best is hydra if he doesn't make templar.

This is of course is if your opponent is dumb enough to use his MASS ARCHON STRATEGY.

Ya plague very good strategy, you could also spawn broodling or lockdown them. Feeddback and maelstrom are also very good. But the real best way to kill them is with mines. Irradiate also work wonders.
You could also consume them with a defiler or even use the terran's most dangerous spell: Defence matrix!

Anything with high damage and range.

Usually units with concussive damage (IE Vults) suck vs large units, but shields take full damage from everything.

So basically goons, vults, tanks, and hydras.

i was gonna post this but i didnt because i didnt know if the guy would be coming back

u shouldnt b asking questicons like this, don't wonder what the proper counter to something is, especially "mass archons". u should be playing your own game and if it's weak against "mass archons" then u probably have 1-2 other options you can see after reviewing the game and that's that. no need to "wonder" what races can do against "mass archons" -- the best way to find out is to try it and see, assuming you can play the race.

when i want to see how a cheese can lose, for instance, i try to do it a lot. at first, i lose because i can't execute it properly. but soon, i work out those quirks, and the cheese catches some people off guard. i check out the replay and see what they did, and find the explanation for their loss. eventually i find things that don't lose to the cheese, and then i can watch the rep, and find out why. eventually i can see a clear line drawn between "loses to N" and "doesn't lose to N", and positions and micro can effect these of course.

but "mass archons" is a midgame thing, not a cheese, u should say. well that's an even bigger point. your midgame depends on what happened already, which depends on what happened already, etc. so when u talk about "mass archon" it really depends on the situation you and your opponent are in, which techs you got first, how many bases you both have and when, if either of you lost some workers or should have lost workers or should have been killed already etc. etc. etc.

so dont think about countering mass archons, or what might counter them. some things are hard to use by themselves against archons, and the rest aren't. archons do lots of dmg (kind of like a dt) but they have a bit of range, can hit air, and splash. in many situations you can kill them while they're morphing or pick off high temps before they can merge. you can move back and forth with muta and archon shouldnt catch you because of ground obstructions. archon can defend something that can shoot farther than a muta and force muta to move away from wherever archon moves to, and can provide high dmg (high dmg is effective against high armor like ultra) similar to a dt but farther and also vs air and there is also some splash. it's still 350 shields, full dmg from all. high dmg also attracts ai targetting. um.

so there shouldnt be an answer to the question because the question is weird. mass archon is not a good strat, and you wont need a good strat vs it to beat it.

emp if he's making many, vultures if he's not. actually terran really doesn't struggle with archons, they're just good for the p if he has a gas:mineral ratio of 3:1 or above.

tons of archons as zerg is actually somewhat of a bitch though.
hydra+ensnare gotta be the best counter though

spuniasaur someone getting ~12 archons lategame pvz isn't particulary rare or weird. just means they did a good job harvesting gas.

Seriously, PvP the best counter to archons is goons. Goons >> Archons in a strait fight. Just do a little dancing and you will come out on top undoubtably.

I guess there was a bit of misunderstanding there... I didn't mean mass archons as in 2 full groups or so - maybe between 10-12 with additional support

unless of course that is 'mass' to you as well, and is 'your opponent not taking you seriously.' *shrug*

u cant react to him getting archons. he gets archons to anticipate what ur doing, or its all he can afford. if u see archons obviously ur not gonna make more mutas or something with intent on attacking the archons with them. so what else does zerg have.. drones? no. sunkens? well zeal/archon should be very good against sunkens by themselves, depends on if u are in a situation to piss minerals away to help your troops to keep him away. zerglings not really ideal i guess. hydras have a chance if microd, depends on numbers. probably better off to have some lurkers to punish any zealotry. hive tech.. um. if u got guardians they're probably on his cliff or something, which forces him to get a shuttle and load his archons up there. defilers arent so useful against archons so their usefulness would be off topic. queens.. i guess ensnare is cool, never really tried but but queens are way cheaper than they used to be so it might be viable, i think drone already said this. spores not so good. .um. i think thats it for zerg units... to summarize, i think.. against lots of archons and zeals.. u can have hydras in front, trying to avoid getting hit too much, lurkers underneath them, not getting hit, but hurting zeals trying to hit your hydras. hydras focus firing on archons that are within range but not running out into zeals away from lurks to get them too much. and if u want more minerals spent in this situation, sunkens can be behind the hydras too, at least dont let him get full surface on the sunks. put a hurting on him. have lords so u can kill any observer with the hydra. maybe u dont need so many hdyra just sunk lurk and kill the obs. i think those are the only option, besides ensnare.. so it shouldnt be too hard to figure out the answer to the question you should be asking.

what more can u say about archons. thats zvp. pvp and tvp archons deserve no discussion at all right? they make archons to try to help draw tank fire or because they have so much vespene they are building gates just to piss it on you.

Lmfao this reminds of a rep I have where it's

1v1 hydra archon both with full health. And the Hydra still wins. If only I could remember what the replay name was >=(
