What do a 12-year-old GTR, a notorious Teamliquid detractor, and the manliest redhead in Japan have in common? At one time or another, they have all participated in a form of commentary long since forgotten in this age of YouTube and Mogulus: the RWA. Let's go back for a second, back to a time when things were much different than they are today.

The year is 2003. JCA had already released the revolutionary BWChart, and now he was releasing something entirely new and unseen. Called a Replay With Audio, it was an incredibly novel concept. The replay and commentary would be packaged together into one file, meaning users didn't have to keep up with two files, or have to match a replay and mp3 file when they wanted to listen. All they had to do was open the RWA program and open BW, and it would do the rest, keeping everything synced up and wonderful. RWA's had existed before this, but they were clumsy and more difficult to manage. JCA's program opened up the opportunity for everyone to easily create and share their commentaries. And share they did.

That's where I found my way into the SC community. Manifesto used to run his own site, Manifesto7.com, and on it he hosted many wonderful RWA files. I stumbled upon the site at random one day, and fell in love with competitive Starcraft. Manifesto's commentaries and really RWAs in general have always held a special place in my heart since.

At some point throughout the years following the age of RWAs, I had lost my collection. Feeling down about this one night, I set out to fix the problem. Using and abusing archive.org, I have managed to collect and organize a whole CDs worth of RWA files (614 MB! 139 files!). I now present you, the Teamliquid userbase, with that collection. In it you will find probably 90% of all the RWAs ever released, with hours upon hours of content. From the wonderful Manifesto commentaries that attracted me to this site to a 12-year-old GTR. From a wonderful musical RWA by Cygnus[X.1] to a collection of commentaries by the notorious Stimey, the variety in this pack is endless. Ever wanted to hear an interview with Hovz? This pack has it. Want to hear how Protoss used to play, right from Hautamaki, creator of one of the best old Protoss strategy sites? You got it. Just want to see how the game has changed? This pack sure has that.

This pack covers patches 1.08-1.12. To play the RWA files properly, you will need to take some special steps.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you do not have a Starcraft CD, you will need some sort of no-cd or fixed image to make this work. This is due to the fact that SC versions prior to 1.15 require a CD. I highly recommend finding a fixed image (hint: google it) and mounting it with Daemon Tools or the like because it will work across all patches, along with being small at only around 2MB.

Initial Setup Steps:
  • First, you will need to download and extract the RWA software, available at:
    • Extract this anywhere you can easily access/remember.

  • Next, you will need a way to play on earlier patches. There are two easy methods for this:

    Option 1:
    • The easiest is to simply download my pack of old Starcraft Executables and extract it into your Starcraft folder. That is available here:
    • To play on patch 1.10 using this method, for example, just run Starcraft110.exe instead of Starcraft.exe. Alternatively, you can select the correct version in ChaosLauncher after you have extracted those executables to the Starcraft folder.

    Option 2:
    • The second way is to use the 7xPatcher. You can find it here:
    • To play on path 1.10 using this method, for example, you run the patcher and choose to install 1.10. After that, running Starcraft normally will produce the 1.10 version.

After you have downloaded the RWA pack, which you will find links to below, you must extract it into your Starcraft replays folder. Inside the pack's folder, the RWAs are sorted first by version, and then by commentator. To play an RWA, first find out what version it is. You must then select the proper version of Starcraft to launch. Note, however, that the RWA software only supports versions 1.10, 1.11, and 1.12. Every other version will work in one of those version, so pick the closest one (IE: for 1.08 and 1.09 replays, use version 1.10).

Launching a replay:
  • First, launch BWPlayer from the folder where you installed the RWA software. Select the correct patch radio button, and then launch the proper version of Starcraft.
  • Afterwards, simply navigate to the replay as normal and start it. The RWA software will pick up on this automatically and play the audio alongside it.

Download link(s):
http://rockify.net/OldRWAs.zip

Please feel free to re-host this pack wherever you like. If you post a new link in this thread, I will add it to the list of download links.

Enjoy!

I'll make one up right now.

Ohh... I remember Manifesto's RWA website. I love RWA's so much. Hopefully some ones I don't have in here ^^ I know Physician has at least a million, if he'd ever upload them (I think he once told me he had about half a gig or something... maybe it was more).

You will never escape it Cygnus... Even for people not clever enough to use this guide, it's always on google video for them.

If there was such an awesome thing as RWA, why don't they exist anymore? Have VODs taken their place?

Pretty much. I remade the RWA software a while back, but they never really took off with the same fervor. Makes sense though, since back in the days of RWAs, live game streams and easily accessible video commentaries were pretty much unheard of.

Cool. I always loved Grot's RWAs. I remember Grot and Rekrul did one together where they analyzed a game Rek and FroZ played, which pretty much taught me PvT.

RWA's were epic. I still think they are better than Vods, because you the player can check out things that aren't shown on the video at any given time.

I remember some funny ones:
Not now sweety (daughter) I'm recording a Starcraft replay.
but dad, Spot (dog) just peed on the carpet... and I think he's going to do the other thing.
... replay pauses...
you hear the guy in the background muttering and sending the dog outside.

Hatamaki made some good ones. I liked his IntotheRainbow vs. Nada one with his sidekick/roommate Epsilon.
"Hi, this is Epsilon. I'm going to help Hautamaki by reading these questions he wrote for me to ask. j/k.

Long live RWA!
Planar Erratus: (www.broodwarai.com/mods/peai) Where the worlds of Baldur’s Gate, Arcanum, Diablo, Icewind Dale, Torment, and Warcraft collide with Starcraft. Don't question, just play! ... Dedicated to all my TL.net friends and old schoolers!
