I've always thought that Starcraft would make an excellent movie franchise. It has one of the best (if not THE best storyline) of all games ever... Now with an enough high budget and proper people behind this project, it really could be an epic trilogy or even "sixology". Just imagine what could people like Peter Jackson or James Cameroon do with this. I believe it would be up there with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars... What's your thought on this? I decided to post this thread after finding a post on cracked.com about best sci-fi movies never made. When I saw Starcraft on that list, I was surprised that someone outside Starcraft community would know Starcraft storyline and even more to acknowledge it's greatness.. Here's that post: http://www.cracked.com/article_15631_p3.html
Yes it would make an excellent movie....but a movie based on a game..? Very possible, but I don't want to see Starship Trooper like props on the Zerg.. and I bet the Protoss would look so cool.
but if a hardcore StarCraft fan (like us) would be disappointed in the story line gets changed even by a little bit, just like how most Harry Potter fans and Twilight fans felt when the movie came out, hot looks wouldn't make up for the distortion of the story line. I'd watch it for the story line, not the graphics and not the actors and the others...
Let's not destroy this game with a movie, even less with a movie trilogy. The story in Starcraft is well made for a game, and it would need some change and filling to make it good as a movie. In general, movie based on video games suck, and vice versa. Leave SC as a game and enjoy it as it is.
And about the best storyline in video games, be cautious there, don't over hype the thing too much. It is among the good ones, but there are countless contenders for this award. You know there are a shit load of games out there do you?
Anyways, my view on this topic stays. I hope no one will ever make a movie about Starcraft or Warcraft Universe. Let them stay in the video games Universe.

Yes please.
Why not, at least we could have a great laugh at how terrible they would be or maybe they'd actually be pretty good like just about anything blizzard touches.
There was an interview or smth with the Blizz CEO about a future blizzard related movie. He said they are actually making smth about it and he mentioned warcraft. Asked about what is gonna be like he replied it was not going to be Thrall's story but more like an epic war movie. Check out imdb

I've talked with warcraft & starcraft movies with my friends a bit before, what I usually settle on is that if ANYONE would make a movie of a blizzard game it should be the Blizzard cinematic team supported by writers & voice actors. =P

Thrall will be in the movie. It will be told primarily from the Alliance point of view The time of the movie is set about 1 year before World of Warcraft begins. The film is mainly about cultures in conflict. It won't be an adventure movie like LoTR, more of a war film.
Anyways, I just can't help but think that Starcraft in the RIGHT hands would be epic. There's certainly material for it. What would differ it from Starship Troopers (which was a satire) is the dark atmosphere. And it wouldn't be so generic sci-fi stuff, like races just fighting each other. If you read some of the novels, you'd see there's great conflicts among themselves (well, except for Zerg, they're always united ). That could create some great drama, like Protoss backstory of Dark Templars who were banished from their community, or fighting among Terrans leaders (and of course our fearless hero Jim Raynor). Also the most highlighted scene would be when Sarah gets betrayed and captured by Zerg. Some great writer (with help of Blizzard stuff of course) along with great director (Peter Jackson / Jackson Cameroon) and there's formula right there for an epic movie.
I'd also like to watch a korean comedy/drama movie about a random guy that by chance picked up starcraft and made it to the top of the ladder through unique/impossible victories, like the previous movie about the hydra vs silent_control.
I would make the movie but not name it Starcraft. If people enjoyed it then I would announce that it was all a lie and is actually named Starcraft. If they didn't like it then oh well, just deny that it has any relation to SC + Show Spoiler [The movies name] +
Starship Troopers! :D Fucking loved that movie. TvZ rapeee. If anyone on TL hasn't seen it you really need to as an SC fan.

Too hard for a starcraft movie... there'd be a lot of deaths. But it would be nice to see it in real life and action. The movie makers would go crazy with special effects :D

Nada vs foru (It was foru... Right?)

Now all we need is PvZ.
Though not mentioned on the list, AvP is the closest thing we will get outside of anything broadcasted on OGN/MBCgame.

I heard it was chrh? I'm not quite sure on this though. Is this the one where Nada (amateur) beats the super gosu?
if a movie is made with the same quality as a starcraft Cinematic, then it would be the best animation ever! but then again that would cost soooooo much fucking mone. SC2's first trailer had millions of polygons i think, and its own team, for a couple minutes of footage. ahh but i guess i can dream..
The people who made The Dark Knight are making the warcraft movie now and it's supposedly coming out this year... I think it's gonna be good, as Blizzard is very serious about this. Few video game adaptations have been box office successes but I think the warcraft movie is gonna be an exception

Nada's story would actually be pretty good for a movie (yes he beat chrh, not foru for the amateur vs gosu thing)
But I'm referring to the korean movie long time ago posted here on tl.net featuring silent_control. Unfortunately I can't find that thread >_<
Would you want hitler to be mad if it's a flop? But seriously though lol, I think it would be a decent movie. I recently thought of that as well. However, a lot of hard work must be put into it, or else the starcraft name would be ruined forever =[
Well it would be a difficult movie to make. Probably extensively long like the lord of the rings series. There are too many details realistically and too many battles to show that there would be probably a total of 6 movies and each movie being about 3 hours or more to be atleast half way true to the game story. But I believe that it can be done and would be worth looking into.
They could also have multiple series. Each about each race. And certain scenes would repeat in the other movies to show how they connected and what happened when for each race. But something as intricate as the starcraft storyline, for it to be any good in a movie would take years to plot out.
Welcome to TL, xabhadonx! Try to look at the latest post date before posting
Now that the damage is done, a Starcraft movie would be BAD ASS. I can't imagine how insane it would be, and with so many Starcraft fans i bet it would be a hit.
even though this thread is from forever ago i think the idea of an sc movie is very relevant. but i'd be afraid of it turning out to be just like any other movie whose director became preoccupied with epic battle sequences.
Blizzard story lines are lame and repetitive. They are completely stolen and combined from other truly original works, astonishing geeks who have never ventured into classic cinema/literature.
Blizzard is so bad at making up original content, that they copy themselves. Take a look at the StarCraft and WarCraft 3 story lines. Pretty much a powerful good doer is turned to fight for evil, and in the end, that rising power takes over the throne of evil, aka Kerrigan and Arthas. As for the first part, a new threat that comes by the masses to threaten all life. New alliances are made across different races, and they combine to stop the evil power in the end, succeeded for the most part. Can't tell whether I am talking about WarCraft3 or StarCraft can you? That is because the undead and Zerg serve the exact same role in both stories. Really, the person who sits at the center of all the story telling at Blizzard is a sad sad man if what he thinks he is creating is either good or original.
Well if they were ever to make a movie, I REALLY want them to make like 3 movies first. The story of Terran, Protoss and Zerg explaning the XelNagas. THEN they can continue on the conflicts of the story for like 2 more movies (Original StarCraft and Brood War), maybe another movie for SC2.
I wasn't aware starcraft had a storyline O_O..I thought it was just a bunch of dumb independent missions, which is why I've never played the single player.

The Michael Liberty novel was really well made, cant say the same for the Xel'naga temple or Marine one. Most of the comics are well drawed and explained some but some seemed a bit too... much "rigtheuness"?

Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead series) is directing Warcraft, not Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) and it's scheduled to be released in 2011, not this year.
If Warcraft does exceptionally well I would say a Starcraft movie could be a reality, especially if Starcraft 2 is a smash hit, which all signs say it will be.
raimi is really hit or miss... warcraft will be a blockbuster sales wise regardless of whether or not it's a truly well done movie.
snyder is a terrible director if you have any respect for the original work. the movie version of watchmen sucked a big fat pile of koala cock. and so did 300.
Maybe a movie that occurs in a era the PREDATES the current starcraft story line. Like some of the wars that occured as say, Shakuras was being built etc, etc. No need to infringe on existing lore, merely add to it. It would make an epic opening:
Black Screen Type appears, "Auir" 6000 B.A. Some cinematic with where some one gets ambushed Black Screen Title
))))), Actualy that looks like the opening cinematic, but in 3-D?
Hayao Miazaki is one of the greatest directors in the world, making for example the Starcraft movies, Spirited Away, My neighbour totoro....
Is he a possible director candidate?? Lets all be crazy fangirls and wish for a psychadelic film with a strong girl (kerrigan, Monoke, Naushika) getting stuck in a strange new world (kerrigan, spirited away, naushika) communicating with the monsters who live there and finally coming out on top (every Miayzaki movie.... and kerrigan storyline again)
Theoretically it could be a pretty epic movie. However, the chances are it would be screwed up.
Thing is, you could only use the game as a rough outline- there are a far too many build a base and destroy the enemy missions, which would make far too many battles in an actual movie.
However- You do have the sympathetic character of Jim Raynor. Episode 1, the Terran mission has the best chance
If you told it from the initial invasion of the Zerg, from Jim Raynor and the colonist's perspective you could follow them joining with the terrorists (plus potential love interest Kerrigan) It would end with a bit of a downer as Mengsk sets himself up as dictator, but I guess that's alright.
I think the route to take would be between Alien and Aliens 2 as far as suspense- that is there are strange occurrences and deaths, and they start finding strange aliens, but it takes them awhile to figure what exactly is going on. (Some the early game cutscenes and storyline seem to lean this way). But the battles would be on a larger scale then either of the Alien films of course.
They'd probably be better off just trying for one movie and seeing how it goes. I don't think there's enough story material in Episode 2 (essentially protect the egg for half the campaign) Plus the Zerg perspective would be difficult to translate on screen. Episode II and III would probably have to be combined.
However, I doubt any director or producer has both the guts and the brains to pull it off satisfactorily.
Imagine if Blizzard had a huge budget and did it Lord of the Rings/Star Wars style and told the story in a trilogy over the course of three movies? Do it like they are doing the Starcraft 2 storyline, first movie focus on Terran, second Zerg, third Protoss all of course covering the over-arching story as well.
The problem with every video game movie thus far has been mediocre directors, actors and writers attached to the productions. If Blizzard got some quality talent behind the movie it could be really epic.
I always felt like magic the gathering made for an epic storyline for a cartoon, something like the animatrix. That said, I think the :wouldn't this be awesome as a ..." sentiment is all wrong. If you feel like that, it's probably because you could imagine it as such, and anyone else version would probably not be as awesome. If you're ever in a position to throw out ideas and have some chance of seeing them made, then great, but if not, just be happy with the experience you got.

It all depends on who the writers and producers are. It could be great or pathetic. I mean look what happened to stargate (dont know if anyone watches this). They started a spinoff series and it sucks. It has great potential, but any series needs to be written and directed properly, otherwise I would be very disappointed with what they would do to the game's image.

I cant believe no one has referenced Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Its a perfect example of what can happen when games become movies. There is huge potential for a movie here but there is no way the execution will be right if it is produced in the US.
I can honestly say that the article was one of the best reads on the internet that I've come across in a long LONG ass time. Every observation the author made was completely on point...he knows exactly why movies have become trash and probably will continue to be from here on out.

i've heard this before as well, if it were true, it would definitely be a great movie.
