Idiot.. What I was saying in the first place is that I'm not surprised ogogo would steal. Progaming is a dead-end. that's like saying 'pro-wrestling is a dead end' or 'being a bmx stuntman is a dead end.' it doesn't matter that careers like these don't have very practical applications outside of their circles. they're niche 'sports' and have their own fanbases with a pretty decent profit for those involved - why does it sound like you think everything outside of academia or traditional career routes are bad? do you honestly think savior is going to quit starcraft after it dies, be left with no options, and become a hopeless degenerate? a progamer already has on his resume something most people would die to have - proof of potential to succeed, proof of dedication and determination, and proof that they can survive in an intense, disciplined competitive environment.
i think you are confusing the stereotypical image of a fat wow player in a basement somewhere, sitting in his pjs ordering takeout with the sharp modern progamer. iirc the younger players still in school like flash and sea still maintain (or had, not sure if sea is still in school) top marks in their classes.

I definitely agree with intrigue here. Starcraft, at least in korea, is becoming something like pro basketball (or any other game) in the other parts parts of the world. That argument is just like saying NBA players (at least the bench players) don't have anything to do after they get old or just and can't pace the young ones anymore.

This is getting into the discussion of how imortant it is for college athletes to take their studies seriously. If you truly make it to the nba and are an all star for 10 years, honestly, you won't need to work again as long as you don't do anything stupid. But that can get kinda boring, and for everyone else, you need to have some more long term plans. The same applies to Korean progaming in sc.... but that doesn't mean that progamers should be stereotyped, or at least not without some legitamite rather than theoretical evidence.

I dont think its fair to compare SC pro gamers to NBA players... the difference in income is just too HUGE.

Idiot.. Agreed, they make start of as addicts but once they turn pro, the fun probably starts to go away. Still, no reason to call him an idiot... I don't disagree with the fact that the fun goes away once gaming becomes your job. Doesn't change the fact that pro-gaming is a fruitless career path.
Flash is top in his class and he's also the top Terran currently in the progaming scene. He's balancing his high school career and Starcraft perfectly and he excels in both.

Idiot.. What I was saying in the first place is that I'm not surprised ogogo would steal. Progaming is a dead-end. Well your relative is just a classic example of an addiction.
It's not necessarilly a "gamer" thing, it's just an addiction, like drugs and alcohol.
Also, in Korea, Progaming is as much of a dead-end as other sports. Perhaps not as big as the mainstream sports like soccer or golf, but ex-tennis players do end up in similar situations, where they invest so much in that career but just don't go far with it.
In fact it's like that for most sports. It's not just a "gaming thing"... it's a natural outcome for any sport.

edit: Nah, too easy to make a cheap shot on this one.

I think you have no idea how different schooling is in other countries than in the US. Being the top of your class in asian countries even as early as middle school is no easy feat.

Like I said, I'm going to be a little biased. I don't consider sports and progaming to be in the same (or similar) category.

They start as addicts and finish as addicts. "Iloveoov picked up Starcraft in his last year of middle school (9th grade). Prior to that he was one of the top students in his school, placing in the top ten every time." Dumbass. It's easy to do well in middle school. What are you doing on this website? It's a progaming website. Do you go on golf/basketball/soccer/hockey/football/tennis/chess/lasertag/pingpong/mahjong forums and tell everyone there that their passion is useless and a dead end? The worst part is that you chose this event to bring up your opinion on how valid progaming is as a life style. That's like news reporters blaming school shootings on cs:s or something.

The people who always opt for the best career choices from a purely long-term financial perspective are in the extreme minority. Most people compromise money so that they can have an easier, more likeable and/or more comfortable job. It's true that being an e-Sports player is quite an extreme, having a relatively low average salary considering how unstable the career is. But if the player has a passion for that career, then it'll be a fruitful experience for him. And as others have already noted, the quality of an e-Sports career is only increasing. Salaries, benefits and number of jobs are all increasing and options for a successful career switch for when a player is done competing are expanding.
