http://bj.afreecatv.com/ceokevin/post/55769763 ‘The cycle at which the ASL is held has nothing to do with the others. This time, we will play the official ASL team league before Season 10 opens after Season 9, which ended in today's final. It will be done in a new way, but depending on the team league schedule, I think Season 10 will change rather than the previous cycle’

I'm glad ATB is back. The final of ATB1 is impressive :9.
My English is poor. I can only use Google translation
Wait, but who will be the teams? The old corporate teams long since left bw, so who is gonna hire the players, pay them money, and get them to wear sponsored gear for matches? Or is this gonna be just "fake" teams created by AfreecaTV that have no real structure behind them? Like they use ASL placement levels to determine that each team has similar caliber of players. Im completely cool if its the latter but would be nice to know it. Given the status of BW as third or fourth biggest esport in korea, it makes sense if we have to settle with so called "fake"teams and still get to cheer for someone at least

yup, last ATB 3 years ago they had the top 8 of the ASL pick 3 players each. shld be the same format still.
the idea that the CEO is floating around is that it might not be part of the ASL cycle like the previous incarnation was, if so maybe there is a chance for larger seasons and more static teams which I'm way more into.
Proleague has always been the best part of professional BW to me, so to see anyting come close to that would make me quite happy.

That would explain why bisu, larva action and stork played placement matches for 5th to 8th place

I don't think those were "official" matches.
looked kinda "semi-official" with all the ASL jackets used and ASL aesthetic..
that would make sense in the light of this upcoming team league, too
Thank god. Blizzard has been blocking team leagues for far too long, I am glad that the new afreeca + blizzard deal finally fixed that. ASL is an amazing replacement for OSL/MSL but proleague was brood war at its best
Don't understand how they will select the teams in the first place. There's no real incentive to only practice within the team and keep strats secret wthin the group either as all players are essentially independents who have been thrown together without the binding contracts that team sponsership and money brings. Proleague style teams don't seem to make sense in the present era of broodwar. There's nothing to tie these individual players together. It'll just be a hollow concept, akin to a bunch of players randomly matching with each other.

Sure there's a risk for this.
But I think your take on it is wrong.
Humans are very simple us and them creatures when it comes to teams. Just think of a rocket league game. In que for a 3v3. U get 5 other players around the same rank. Then they're splitinto 2 teams. And suddenly your opponent trying to score against you is your enemy, and you/your teammates bm them. And your teammate scoring is cheered for. Or you/they bm your own team out of dissapointment in their part in your teams performance.
Just look at Larvas joker video. They randomize teams, play a long bo 15 game series, really cheer for those in their team. Prices, glory, fear of defeat. There's a lot of simple incentives to engage people in teams.
How exactly it's done in this era I don't know but I don't think it'd be a hollow concept, don't think it's difficult.
Back in kespa days they'd practice with people from other teams before starleague games anyway.

I'm not saying they can't form teams. I'm saying how can it possibly be a competition between teams when there is nothing to bind the teams together as the teams are not a distinct entity? You can throw a bunch of players into separate teams, but when prize money is at stake, who wouldn't want to be on Flash's team? If there's no prize money, where is the incentive for the players to play their best? Sure, you can cheer for a team, play for the team you are on, but that doesn't change that it's no longer a competition if no prize money is involved, or that it is more chance of how the teams are made that determines who gets the money. If there is no money, you are asking players to adhere to a schedule and play for free. If there is money, how can it be fair to determine the prize of slapdash put together teams? How would those issues be addressed?

Well They'd play it, they wouldn't leave the competition because of unfair teams. And Afreeca would want a good competiyion for the viewers. What signs from the history of korean e-sports point towards them not caring? It's not like they give up on ASL because of Flash. And it's not even clear wether it'd be an all kill league or a regular 5 match format. In old teams they had snipers. People practicing one specific match up, some where even just known to be experts on one specific map.
And no pricemoney? This is just a rumor, I saw nothing about no pricemoney. If they start a team league there'll likely be pricemoney.
Pro league was always the most valued competition among koreans. Unless their culture somehow has been radically individualised over the last 8 years they'll still care about it even if it's a different kind of team league.
I think we've painted very different pictures of what it'd likely look like if they follow through with it.
Hope this makes sucess and something like proleague comes back. I still remember how good Bisu x Flash acematch was in the last proleague (even as a Samsung Khan/Jangbi fan).

Team league could have a broadcasted draft, no team stacking allowed, and there are spots for rookie players. It could be a way to give up and coming players regular experience.
Oh yes ! a Teamleague... and oh i'm dreaming already
Because of the success of this starcraft teamleague, Sponsors get attracted to BW again... and ... Korean Telecom remake a team. One team. THE ONLY team. KT freaking Rolster.

You are saying that the players would be happy to play for free and play at their best because of their nostalgia for the kespa period of broodwar. The players will not share your nostalgia for the kespa period of bw. Just about every player say they are much happier now.

Not what I'm saying no. One of my examples was specifically about how these free streaming players teambattled on their own, really cared about it. The teams had no sponsors, no names, no kespa. But they cared and had fun. People are generally social, like competing together towards a common goal.
Yeah Kespa ran pro league, the players were not free then. But is Kespa running this one? No and we still don't know how it'd take shape or even if it will happen. The players don't have to have any nostalgia about Kespa days. It's irrelevant, as Afreeca runs this. Btw since ur making assumptions on my view on Kespa. I can tell u my view on it. I'm nostalgic about pro league, not kespa in itself. I've compared it to slavery. But I also see functions in it as necessary for a big team league. But that's a whole other discussion.
Your arguments against a teamleague are applicable on ASL as well. Most people don't qualify. Lots of people go for the amateur tournament. No money except for the winner and top 16 or 8 afaik. Yet the players care, practice, come back for the next one. And again. How can u be so sure there's no money in it at all? No pricemoney, only slavery contracts awaits?
Based on the very small info we've gotten we all vision different scenarios of how a potential teamleague would play out. I think you paint a pessimistic picture of it, that it misses out on other possible ways it could happen.
History doesn't have to repeat itself, Afreeca should be judged on what Afreeca does, not on what Kespa did.

I assume these teams will only exist for the duration of the event, since it uses a coaches' draft format similar to how Afreeca Team Battle functioned.
