Confused: How can 4:3 and 16:9 be the same for SCR

I just bought StarCraft Remastered and am getting back into BW after a 8 year hiatus. I'm a little confused by the implementation of the new 16 ratio. Things looked the same, i.e. nothing's stretched-out/fatter. How are they able to do this while preserving the original game. There's no way I'm seeing more of the map, am I?

I've been watching past ASL's and the casters say that some of the players choose to play on 4:3 and others play 16. If you can choose to see more of the map by playing 16 why in the world would anyone choose to play 4:3. Being able to see more of the map would be a huge advantage.

Yes, 16x9 shows more. You can switch between HD and SD on the fly by pressing F5 and see what it looks like in 4x3. HD graphics and 4x3 is option "Pillarbox".
Yes, some progamers prefer playing 4x3, since you need less mouse movement(and eye movement too, but that's debatable). While observing games you even see the difference in size of the boxes. Bisu, for example, played tournaments in 4x3, windowed in small resolution, something like 800x600.
I live in Russia. I wear the fufaika, valenoks and the shapka-ushanka with the red star. I drink vodka straight from the samovar, and my riding bear plays on the balalaika.

Rain also plays 4:3 in a small windowed box that covers only like 30% of the screen.

Mouse movement feels better in 4:3, you don't have to drag to mouse as far to drag the screen.
I also strongly dislike the new graphics and prefer to play with the old graphics, and on top of all that being able to see more of the map can also be a hinderance, because your have to spread out your vision more.

But in the end, its just a question of preference, nothing else.

4:3 have the advantage that you need less mouse movement to move your mouse to the minimap. It could also be a muscle memory problem that if you are used to 4:3, it can take time to adjust to 16.

A lot of us have been playing the game for many years and we got used to playing in 4:3. If we were to switch to 16, we'd have to move the mouse more to reach the minimap or to scroll the map to the left or to the right.
Please send me a PM of any song you like that I most probably never heard of! I am looking for people to chat about writing and producing music | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noD-bsOcxuU |

You wouldnt have to move your mouse to the edge of the screen because its already on your screen

One thing I notice about pros is that they actually don't move the screen by scrolling very often. Even strong amateur players do that too much, and it reduces their speed a lot.

I think everyone is right though, it probably has something to do with not needing to move the mouse as far / muscle memory / where you need to move the mouse to click the minimap.

Yes, you see more. Enough in fact that you can have your townhall and the entrance to your natural on screen at the same time, on some maps. (Eddy)

As for the minimap, there's a setting that restores its original position if you need that.

If you want to go further down the SCR imba hole, the (unbelievably ugly) anniversary hud lets you see and click more vertically.

Progamer preferences seem all over the place. A bleeding edge, experimental player like Larva plays with all the bells and whistles, maybe even different hotkeys. A tried and true macrobot will probably stay on 4:3 and default keys, to avoid having to retrain.
Playing in a window is an interesting and possibly optimal choice, because of the way your eyes work. (you only have detailed color vision in the very middle of your fov, the rest is optimized towards luminance and movement detection)

If middle scroll wasn't so terrible in BW, then we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Thank you for your explanations! I see there are pros to 4:3.

Switched to 16 : 9 but since I got a 27" monitor I found it too big to move my mouse around so I switched back.

You can always play wide in a window.
