In honor of StarCraft: Brood War turning twenty (they grow up so darn fast...), this Friday and Saturday, a special stream hosted by our friends  Day(9), Tasteless, Artosis, and iNcontroL will be broadcast for your viewing pleasure, possibly while wearing suits. So, whether you've been playing StarCraft since 1998, or just got into it recently, you know what a great game it can be to play, with all its challenges, agonizing moments of defeat, and the sweet nectar of victory. This event is a celebration of this awesome game.
The stream will feature the players IdrA, Huk, Livibee, Ret, TLO, Nony, Lzgamer, PiG, White-Ra, and UpaTreeZelda. Yes, the real IdrA is going to be play StarCraft: Brood War in 1v1. According to the announcement thread, there will be 2v2v2v2 games, team games, and free-for-alls. But will there be, really? rly tho? You'll just have to tune in to find out, won't ya? So, cancel your Friday plans, tell your boss you're sick, and glue yourself to your computer this Friday. Or don't. It just means I'll be able to spam more CoolCats in the chat.

Well, Stork is in an epic slump, and Flash and Jaedong are playing in the ASL. Korea is the hub of StarCraft, but outside of Korea, we non-Koreans also like to do fun things together.

Day9 was a host/caster at dota2 major tournaments in the meantime, so working for Blizzard's competition. However, I do not know for sure if this is what they were joking about with that "talking about that other game".

Also on another note... maybe it is wishful thinking, but possibly they plan BW events tomorrow along with an announcement and/or patch release and the SC2 portion is to hype the other crowd into it? Also, technically the full announcement makes it sound like there will be SC2 and it was a misinterpretation on our part or something. The event is tagged as "Brood War" despite this on teamliquid.net's calendar. But the Blizzard post does say "the SC20 Anniversary Stream will take us on a journey encompassing stories of days past, the competitions of the present, and our hopes for the future. There will be also gameplay, of course, representing the massive diversity ways that people have enjoyed StarCraft throughout the years, including team games, free-for-alls, 1v1, and of course. . . 2v2v2v2".
But then again, I also personally thought that could have just meant Brood War from interpretation and seeing as it was advertised as "StarCraft 20 Year Anniversary Event" and assumed they meant the original game and not the franchise (seeing as how it is only two games anyways...) but then you have to assume the invite list and realize it was their intention to do SC2 from the beginning, so it is actually the latter case, being, this event is to celebrate StarCraft in its entirety.

I'm sorry man but I think you're getting your hopes way too high. I'm all for being hopeful/optimistic but months of problems in this game have killed me.. This game still has broken matchmaking, profiles that don't work, and laggy games, regardless of how close you are to your opponent. I can't imagine they have anything big on the horizon for a product like that. My friend said that it's probably more likely the WC3 1.29 patch is released during this event than any big BW news/patch, and I can't disagree with him.

This whining is just amazing. There is no way they are going to invite this many BW players and not play any BW. They start off with SC2 to bring in viewers and then those viewers stick around to watch the BW plays. SC2 is the bigger game to most people in the world so it makes perfect sense to lead off with SC2 stuff. Just be patient and quit your whining.
This is a two day event. They will play Brood War. Bitching about them not playing it right at the start of the first stream is not gonna make them play it any faster.

I used to play SCII, even got 3rd platium during WOL. Every expansion the game got worse, too many new units and BS.
This isn't a twenty year celebration of StarCraft. The 19th year celebration for example is what this should be.

HELLO folks.
I think it's fine to be bitter that a StarCraft anniversary event starts off with a long StarCraft II block.
But just keep in mind that jumping in with a one-liner that just says "I hate this" isn't the posting standard we want to see at TeamLiquid.net. There are plenty of ways to express yourself that aren't low-effort or clearly leading to/escalating a fight. Also, it's fine to be unhappy with the invited players. Just don't cross any lines of decency/manners or turn it into attacks against the players.

I really hope every SC anniversary, Blizzard honors (or mention) the Korean community because it is literally them (mostly them, there are also people from other countries) who made Starcraft alive through all these years. Up to year 20, and beyond.

This is thought process is real and is the number one reason why ever major gaming series fails. Its called cattering to casuals.
Halo: Now you can have both sprint and jet pack together, and after 4 assists you get a random drop for effort. "Wow I did nothing and got a sniper rifle"
WoW: I don't want to learn fights or attempt team work. "I killed a raid finder raid boss and got a 910 legendary!"
StarCraft: this game is too slow. "Wow I start with twice as many workers now and mid game play is now early game!"
Anyone wonder why the RTS genre died? Everyone wants instant action and 'shiny' immediately.

the main reason why it falls back is just because blizzard types of RTS are complicated for an average player,
besides it is much harder psychologically to lose in a 1v1 game like this one, probably modern starcraft still has the same highest skill requirements as some hardcore 1v1 fightings

Seeing this ... i think the SC2 viewers can be happy about the SC2 PvZ balance Nony put up a decent fight, too bad he lost those corsairs in game 3, i am sure in a longer serie Nony could have fighted harder ... anyway Ret was still superior years ago not much has changed.

Cool stream today! I wish there were more Broodwar, but SC2 is going to be what brings in the view numbers unfortunately.

I didn't play it competitively either but that is one of the big issues in vanilla SC because as you said, you stim to try and deal with mutas but there's nothing to heal your units and mutas will just regen and accumulate.

that's part of why a third of the BW changes are giving people muta counters XD (it didn't help that no one knew how to make maps in early SC)

Heh, maybe even half if you count valkyries as a muta counter (I think they were intended that way). And then devourers mostly just exist to counter corsairs, and lurkers are needed to counter the marine/medic combo. So everything in brood war other than DTs and uh... goliath range? is a result of mutas.
Makes me wonder what the game would be like if they had just nerfed mutas instead.

In terms of foreign BW viewership for a point. The biggest foreign Broodwar tournaments get like 200 viewers unless it's something like Zotac that was on the front page of twitch (including one of the qualifiers I casted) and that gets about 1000, that's likely due to people from the front page and not due to the game.
There isn't many people watching BW and we need to work as a community to generate as much content as possible to grab more attention!

back when vanilla was played competitively the game was so underdeveloped and people sucked so hard that mass muta wasn't 'that' overpowered. like muta ling sunken would lose against zealot archon templar because zergs wouldn't really manage to snipe templars with mutas and archons with sunkens, and definitely not win muta vs archon. Still - introduction of valk sair devourer are all consequences of mass air being too powerful. (there was a period during vanilla where mass scout was a dominant composition - they also reduced scout firing rate vs ground to combat this).
If people played it today, a reasonably well executed 2 hatch muta would win every game both zvt and zvp.

Thanks, I appreciate the retrospective. I think I only played the campaign and maybe a *few* bnet matches in vanilla, with no clue what to do. I remember it seemed like a huge revelation when I realized that I could use firebats to stop zealot rushes.

The Blizzard news post didn't mention SC2 nor SCR, they just said StarCraft.

I didn't expect that SC:R would be the majority of the stream time but I did think they would play some more of it. It is the game that is turning 20 after all and has a lot of fun 'non serious' modes like hunters, race wars and team melee. It's not something that is upsetting to me, just surprising.
Edit: They started doing a BW segment which is more than enough to make me content!

Thanks for the videos, the beta was quite interesting. The reactions from FBH when he saw the 250 damage scarabs and when he tested the psi storm for 25 energy and it killed his zealot and dragoon completely was priceless.

I'm not sure how many of you read TL, but I just want to say thank you guys for putting on the event. I know people are never happy with whatever you do, but some of us do appreciate it and thank you for still loving the same game we do.
I may just be a lowly TL member who never really achieved anything with the game or won any tournaments/casted any major tournaments like you guys, but I'm going to do the best I can to keep hosting events and casting events for BW for as long as I possibly can. Let's all make it to the 40th anniversary!

Not to repeat what others have said, but I had hoped for mostly Brood War.
SC2 is a lot of fun to watch when played at the highest level. But for a 20 year anniversary stream to prominently feature jokey SC2 games between players who aren't the most known or very good at the game seems slightly off to me.
I think Artosis commented on stream that even intermediate players playing BW is pretty entertaining. Something about the pace of the game that makes it more electric to watch.
Not the end of the world since I'm sure we'll get many more BW events in the future. But I can't help but feel favoring a lot of SC2 over BW on this stream has the potential of hurting BW a little. And players like Nony and Ret have been vocal about committing to SC2 because that's where the focus is; tournaments, events, etc.
I just hope we don't lose sight of Remastered. It just got here! Maybe Geoff Incontrol Robinson can shepherd some more events in this direction.
