NOTE: -These earnings don't include the money players receive from other things such as ads and sponsoring companies, tournament earnings. -Partner BJs receive 80%, Best BJs receive 70%, Regular BJs receive 60% (Flash and NaDa are the only Partner BJs out of all Starcraft BJs) -Partner BJs also receive money from ads Afreeca puts on the streams -Shuttle received more balloons than Flash in the month of June but earned less because Flash is a Partner BJ. -There are only around 30 Partner BJs in the entire Afreeca. Having 2 in BW is amazing. Would have been 3 but Bisu declined the offer. -I only included BJs that have BW as their main content.(Excluded people like terror and britney)
Shuttle streams the most out of any starcraft bjs. "Shuttle streams till his heart stops"-Sea- While Flash puts in a lot less hours than most of these guys.
Terror makes 40KUSD a month just from Youtube alone. He makes around 140K USD a month from Youtube, Afreeca(Ballons, Ads, Events etc.), and Sponsors(also Ads). He doesn't even exchange balloons to cash. I guess he's saving it for a rainy day.
Brtiney is very transparent about how much he makes. He reveals how much he makes at the end of every month. "Most of what I make is from viewers. It is only fair that I share how much I make to my viwers" -Britney- He makes close to 40K USD a month.

btw for anyone curious or questioning sources, you can look at the daily balloon earnings of Afreeca BJs from this site, which compiles statistics from korean Afreeca site (provided you know their afreeca nicknames of course)
The top few players are earning well, but the rest of starcraft 1 streamers are actually making very little. Its not sustainable for them. The numbers are mind blowing, but also are misrepresenting of the star1 player base earnings as a whole.

I wouldn't say that these numbers are mind blowing, they are close to the average EU salary (3000 EUR/month) and the average salary in South Korea (2900 $/month) according to Google. The fact that they don't spend 8h on streaming is of course increasing the $/hour rate. This is very good news, BW is alive and kicking.

Bro, trolling? or blind? the best players are earning roughly $30000 USD PER MONTH don't even talk about $/hour, its insanely high lmao
the others hardly earn much but irregardless, what the top earners get is mind blowing compared to your average office worker.

I think he was reading those numbers as per year... It's per month though...
I am surprised Mind earns that much, he only has like 300 viewers max, unless there is a sponsored match. Some viewers must really have a lot of money.
Yeah honestly. Compare that with the income of football players in europe. Those guys earn a disgusting amount of money, far more than these bw players...

Oh shit, I was probably half-asleep when I wrote that and thought it was a year salary. Hahaha, my bad. Oh shit, they earn so much, like x10 more than an average EU and Korea salary ;D

Here, where? I've been earning $1100 but that was like a lot in my country and I knew that for that same job ppl in US were getting payed like x10 more and I think it was very unfair. Also, imagine these guys were working hard like almost all their youth and basically have no other knowledge or experience other than BW. If it was not for Afreeca or other streaming services where would they go? Dish washing? It is actually very fair, in my opinion, that they are getting payed for their incredible skills in one of the most difficult E-sport games. Also, how many of the total number of former BW pros are getting payed that much?

Keep in mind that a career of a football player does not last long, 35 and you're practically out. What you gonna do next? Coaching? Ads? You are still young at 35 and all you can do is play football. Even if you have pockets full of money this is just sad in my opinion.

Eh what. You are from germany. In germany, clubs give a shit about their player's education so they can do something after they quit. You also got a lot of options like becoming a coach etc. right of the bat.

My point is, the player has no education except the knowledge of kicking the ball, not the best skill to have when you are in your 30s.

He lost many viwers by not playing bw but doing other contents(mind craft, csgo, sudden attack and other silly games).
Those are insane numbers. I hope they invest some of it in tournaments, pro houses and other ventures that continue to sustain broodwar. Has there been any news on that front? Having the ASL be a prize pool of $16K is awesome, but compared to those numbers I would hope a big BW tournament would have 5x that amount.

That was my take on it as well. Does Afreeca do anything special for the ASL tournaments they run? Like it'd make sense in this day and age to have some type of crowd funding based on balloons sold during a competitive broadcast.

As much as I love bw, there's really no chance of bw ever making a comeback when no youngsters want to play the game. It'll fade away when flash/jaedong/bisu and so many others go to army and overwatch/future games slowly destroy young bw playerbase. The final nail in the coffin would be all bwers get too old to play this game.
However I'M optimistic that bw scene will go on for another 6-7 years so thats a good news.

It's crazy how much people donate, I'd like to know if the donations come mainly from rich people who can afford it or just silly kids/young adults who throw their money at people that are already 100x richer than them. I'm only 29 but I already feel like I'm too old to understand this lol. The same donation frenzy is happening on twitch too nowadays, it seems like ad money isn't even 1% of a streamers' earnings now. The problem with crowd funding is all the rich donors only want to give money to their favorite players. They are unwilling to put it in a prize pool when they want to just give it directly to their favorite. We would need to find incentives for the big money donors to get behind crowd funding.

I bet if Flash, Bisu and Shuttle invested part of their income in a tournament for youngsters the effect would be significant. But who am I to demand, I am happy for the guys, they definitely deserve it, just wondered if they realize what power is in their own hands.

Yeah but you can't compare : BW was still a pro game kicking with big competitions and sponsorships, and it was still played in the pc bangs. I'm not korean but i doubt a lot of kids choose to play BW over LOL or overwatch (or SC2 lol).
I think most of the BW viewers are the old fans who used to watch the competitions back in the day.
On the bright side oldies like nada or injured people like flash can still play good so they are good for some years.

I would think that the pros would be able to sway them to donate something. I wouldn't expect a league to get 30k a month, but I think if we got them to throw the competitions a bone, that'd be legit.
But I do suppose you have a point, there's a reason why some streamers are so goddam rich, meanwhile the Kim Carry league isn't as big as people wished it would be. (Although.... I think if we saw some streamers act against their own self interest, they could encourage more donors for these type of events.... I'd imagine it would act like a full tip jar type of effect)

I think pros can do that. Some saved up a lot of money. Sea said he has saved up 1.3 million so far. Koreans speculate that for flash its almost 4 million. they got lot of money.
There seems to be a much more mature philosophy of careful saving in Korea than the US, so I'm not surprised. In the interviews you'd always hear that the pros were sending their winnings to their parents to save/invest.
I think BW can pull in a new generation. It isn't a normal video game where all that matters is graphics. It's something different. Like...nobody thinks that fancier board games like Settlers of Catan is going to replace chess.
The critical piece might be a new patch by Blizz for modern compatibility.
As much as these guys make, it is still much smaller than what Terror makes. It's still like the SC2 foreign scene, where making an ass of yourself is more lucrative than being one of the best players around.

It's like everywhere. The shit entertainment earns the biggest amount of money.
Is there any reason Starcraft 2 pros in Korea don't seem to stream on Afreeca (or at least never featured on TL and I don't speak Korean)? I know it isn't as popular as Brood War has always been but surprising at least a few players like Maru or Zest could potentially draw in viewers.

Not to be rude or anything but the fact that one of sc2's best players RAIN had to stream bw to get at least 100 viewers for his stream says it all. There seems to be no sc2 scene in afreeca.

I guess those are PC-bang numbers.
The filters aren't working for me right now but the overall rankings are..
Overwatch League of Legends FIFA Online 3 Sudden Attack Maple Story Starcraft (1) Dungeon Fighter Lineage Blade and Soul Aion
That seems about right for when I visit a PC Bang too.

And that is only PC bang. I guess people tend to play BW at home due to preference for mouse/keyboard is much more important. Most people can pirate/have alot of copies of BW, while SC2 you need to invest 100$ etc so people tend to go to the PC bang to play SC2.
