Weird to see a move to a move to a standalone client so suddenly, the ability to do everything in the browser made it feel really modern.

I'm sure you have good reasons though, did you face any major challenge tied to web development or was it just oh fuck it javascript is stupid let's change before it's too late ?

Speaking as a tester, especially recently, there were a lot of problems with the service recently where an unexpected browser update would make shield battery incompatible with its own service program. Getting a standalone while keeping the browser chat program allows for a lot more flexibility, especially as the features get more advanced (more OS compatibility, window changes, auto mm, and hotkey layout adjustment)

It's mostly cutting out the middle man, and the new thing feels discord esque even more now. Worrying about which browser it worked on when was a complete hassle over the last few weeks for me.

My window size is set to 1680x1050 which is the size of my monitor, and I have maintain aspect ratio on. But in game the sides of my monitor arent used by bw, and the aspect ratio is skewed from Broodwars normal aspect ratio. Why/how do I fix that?

To be fair, the recent browser update thing would have been easily fixable without doing this, we just didn't want to take time away from the standalone client work we were already doing.

But the background service was the source of the *only* common setup issues we saw any more, and explaining how to fix said issues was very involved/complicated for the users it affected (roughly 1-2%), which is pretty much the opposite of the thing we're trying to do here It was also just sort of hacky, had weird security implications that made developing things harder, and isn't something we can guarantee to work for the foreseeable future. So in short, we felt that while launching a game from your browser seemed cool, it was mostly a gimmick that wasn't worth sacrificing other important things for.

You sound like you want maintain aspect ratio *off*. Maintain aspect ratio means "keep the aspect ratio at Brood War's native 4:3, possibly by adding black bars on the sides". Your monitor likely does *not* maintain aspect ratio when you play in full screen, so it stretches the game , and that's what you're used to.

a please sir, kindly disagree. Also, QuakeLive became a browser only game before even when you signed up for TL.net.

Client is very nice and cant wait for all features to be in working order so more ppl can jump on yay!

I'll also note that I don't have any problems with JS or web development, the client still largely runs on the same code it had before (in your browser), just reorganized a fair amount. All our code for the standalone client's interface and the one on the web is shared, which is why we can still maintain the website for things like chat easily. We also run JS inside Brood War itself, and have since this was released

Sometimes the game doest start from the frist try, so I have to push start button once more. And today we encountered some lag, although both me and my opponent had everything closed, and extra high lat didn't help too.
What could be the reason for these?

I've struggled with people with some people from Australia in the past. Do you or the person you were playing with get lag with other people? Just so you can try to isolate the problem.

Australia is a likely problematic location atm, South America is too. We don't currently have servers in either, so if the people they're playing are also far from the available servers, there's a larger likelihood of lag. We'll get servers in both eventually, but there aren't enough players for it to be worth it at the moment. We'll also add some latency info ingame soon so that you don't have to keep guessing who you're having trouble with

Tough to say without seeing logs. Hit win+r, type: %AppData%/ShieldBattery/logs and hit enter. Go to https://gist.github.com and drag the log files from there in, and hit 'Create secret gist'. Then send me the link to them (you can PM me here or whisper me on ShieldBattery if you'd like)

Is there any way of having Shield Battery save your window position or is it something you can implement at some point? My window keeps opening mid of my monitor and blocking my notepad haha.

Can someone help me understand why adding servers fixes this issue? I thought brood war was a peer-2-peer game so the only thing that matters would be the distance between both players. Or does the flow of information always have to pass through a server still? My apologies, I'm not really familiar with networking (?).
