It really helps recognition of things on the minimap because red is so much easier to see on the minimap than other colours. When you're completely immersed in what you're doing it becomes really easy to miss an enemy passing into your field of view for an instant, which might be crucial in the game, for example if it's a dropship in TvZ. With the red spots on the minimap it's easy to spot that dropship in the corner of your eye even amid all of your multitasking, and even if you don't have time to check what it is on the big map, you'll be prepared for it when it comes.

Uh, I think you mean changing minimap colors, not the color cycling option in F10 -> O -> V

I'm guessing the graphics option is this, if it is then it's just a particular way that SC draws stuff on the screen. I have it enabled so I think it's on by default, the reason it's an option is probably that it won't work for some people due to weirdness with their graphics card/drivers, so if they get display problems they can try turning it off to see if it fixes them. I assume you don't want to know exactly what it does unless you're interested in techincal details of computer graphics

I always turn it off because otherwise my starcraft becomes completely laggy and I can hardly play. Not something I'm willing to give up in order to have pretty animated water, if that really is what it does.

It does suck, but it's more that it acts weird than it actually lacks in power or whatever. It's an old machine you know...

shift+tab once changes the minimap colors to allies: yellow, yourself: green, opponents: red
shift+tab twice changes the minimap colors AND in game colors to the above
shift+tab thrice resets it back to normal

In game colors change to You=Teal Ally=Yellow Enemy=Red

The enemy is slightly darker red than regular red in both minimap and gamescreen.

I Hate being teal i always just use shift tabx1 unless in 3 or more player game.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Ahhh! So that's why the water looks so messed up after you alt-tab, it's all part of the color cycling ^_^

I like the teal vs red every game, I get used to it so every game is "standardized" (for 1v1) in a way. And I can't stand being 1 colour in the game and being another colour in the minimap.

Another questions: when hosting a public game, there is an option called "Make game public". What does this mean exactly. I know the literal translation, but what are the effects? Does it remove the bans or smthg. Thanks in advance.

I think it refreshes the game so it jumps up in the game list, but not sure. Like say you need 2-3 more players but no one is joining, you press "make game public" and it jumps a bit further up and someone new might notice it and join it.

Starcraft run laggy when there is more than 20 units on screen on a P75, it is smooth on a P150 (with music off).
There is NO laggy starcraft nowadays.

Yes, thanks alot guys. I knew about this in warcraft ( and used it ) but i had no idea that it was available in StarCraft.
Was this added in a patch or was it there from the start?

when u press make game public, it removes the password, coz when u have password, the game is private. Removing password makes it public
Im not sure, but it may be true that it also bumps the game to top of list (like close/open).

From what i've seen if VODs, all progamers use Teal color for themselves and red for enemy. (u can see it when they switch to FP view).

Also, hitting tab will make the minimap terrain dissapear. It might be useful, but I hate it.

bump for retro art (due to the nature of the images I cannot embed them here). It's running in Javascript, fwiw (IE users may not be able to view HTML5 Canvas).
