The players that arose around 2004 had largely replaced the older guard when 2006/07 arrived. I'm thinking players like GGplay, Savior, Julyzerg, Iris, Midas, Casy, Anytime etc They were born around 86-87. The players born from 88-89 had a meteoric rise and by 2008 had for the most part replaced the generation of 86-87. And even though this generation was joined by those from 90-93 in the proceding years, they never really fell off like those from 86-87. I'm inclined to believe it had in part to do with them starting playing at just a couple years younger and where introduced to the game just at the right cut off point in their brains development. Hence they were not replaced so easily by generations younger than them. In addition they were arriving with more or less a modern metagame served on a platter to them. They could consentrate more on training and perfecting skill, whereas the preceding generations had to spend more of their time mapping out strategies and tactics. I believe that legends like Boxer, iloveoov, Savior and Nal_ra were all great thinkers of the game. They did not just copy others, they sought out to understand the game in order to think around it. We should never underestimate how rare original thinkers like these are. The vast majority do what they feel is expected of them. Its wrong to think that they were out of their prime when 2007 came around, rather their success relied on them staying ahead of the metagame. In 2007 however too much was being figured out about the game. Their innovations had one after the other been caught up with the rest of the playerbase. Throw in players that had perfected their intuition and execution from a young age, it seemes that the only thing giving them any edge at that point was experience at playing live in front of an audience

But from what I learned about the BW-past that I missed, I was missing one name in your text. + Show Spoiler + ![]() And indeed his career could not really be explained by your theory: On September 20 2019 07:42 tanngard wrote: [...] The players that arose around 2004 had largely replaced the older guard when 2006/07 arrived. He even startled everyone with a new nuke rush in 2019 against one of the best Zergs around today, lel As mentioned, that doesn't mean that you could not be right about the other legends and the 86/87 generation and the 88/89. And obviously Nada couldn't keep up after his early 2007 OSL win. Still his career seems really unique. Must have a special gift.

My theory just attempts at helping to explaining the overall picture. About Nada: Nada and Chojja was considered the first really young pros when they broke through in the big leagues. Boxer was 4 years older than them and broke out well over a year before. Nal_ra was 2 years older and Iloveoov was 1 year older, yet both broke out around a year after Nada and Chojja. So yeah, some were a bit younger than normal and some a bit older. Julyzerg and Midas were super young when they starting making their names in 2004, even younger than what Nada and Chojja was two years before. And then came Sea in late 2005. Freakishly young. Born in march 29 1990. His teammate Light too a bit later. Flash and Mind the same thing For sure Nada had longevity, but so did Boxer, Yellow, Reach and Nal_ra (if we compare them age-wise) - despite them belonging to the generation before Nada with inferior mechanics to Nada (altough Nada was the one who was able to win a starleague deep into his career and not just silvers). This of course was also the case for Julyzerg with his OSL win in July 2008. They both had unique gifts for sure. The best example of a late bloomer that i can think of would be Much - The Grandpa Toss

I haven't seen him streaming for a long time, which seems strange taking into account he was always saying that streaming is his job, and he does it for family. I know defiler/lurker/ling/hydra is way more cost-effective than ultra/ling/defiler, but damn I miss watching huge archon armies fighting huge utlra armies with swarms and storms everywhere haha.
