But Best was a great player, handsome devil, and seemed very emotional during and after all of his games. He was worth watching fo sho I think you're looking back on it with the knowledge of the future in two regards. First, you're looking back and imagining Fantasy at the end of bw vs Flash in his peak. Second, you're looking back because Best dropped 2 games to Flash, had Best won either of those games you would be looking back on things very different. Best probably was the best shot SKT had to beat Flash at that time (his height). From 08/15/10 to 08/18/11 (just before the final): Fanta was 2-6 vs Flash, Best was 3-1 vs Flash, and Bisu was 1-5 vs Flash. Bisu is a good player, and he has had the opportunity to beat Flash twice to win finals for SKT (WL 2011 and the last real SPL), but both times he did, he had a map advantage and really played a smart game to trick Flash. I don't mean to take those games from Bisu, they were excellently played and he deserved to win them. But on even maps (PvT 47% and 53% all data included) I think that Best had to be the call. As for Fantasy - he was a good player, but you're going up against Flash's vT when Flash was at his best. Check out Flash's record for the same time period. From 08/15/10-08/18/11 Flash was: 42-10 (80.77%) vT 34-15 (69.39%) vZ 24-12 (66.66%) vP Flash's largest statistical weakness was vP, he had a losing record vs Best recently, I just can't justify I call of Fantasy over Flash. I'm fairly confident that if Fanta got the call in that finals that he wouldn't be able to say he was undefeated in the finals anymore.

Guys like Best have to burn out though, he puts extreme effort into fitness, gaming, and everything he does that he inevitably burns out, which is why he cannot reach the pinnacle. Instead of being consistent, he operates on the sine wave. He doesn't have huge wells of determination like Jaedong or Flash - but he goes on huge motivation binges. He remains solid in PvT and PvP even when he is overall not doing that well (unlike Jangbi who even managed dropped sets to ACE players during his slump) which kept him afloat. If there was another season, he would have been top 7 easy around under Flash, Soulkey, Fantasy, Jangbi, Stork. (Jaedong wasn't quite the Tyrant towards the end of Oz and T8) My favorite game of his is when he totally just ran over ForGG in PL finals.

That was sorta the whole point though, people only remember him particularly for his failings. And I outlined three ridiculous vP / vT / vZ streaks, the fact he was clearly the best Dragon and that he had a 3-0 against flash going into the set yet SKT fans dismiss him.

Like many sport franchises, a lot of the fans can be bandwagon and kind of fickle - fans were leaving the stadium when Best was sent against Flash instead of Bisu. He definitely received a lot more attention than the other 6 Dragons minus Bisu (eg: Free) and players like Stats didn't have a stable of fangirls despite his stellar record.

though bisu was definitely the more charismatic player with his flashy PvZ watching best's PvT showed me how to play the matchup (yes i was one of those oddities on iCCup in the mid C ranks who had far more trouble with terrans than protosses or zergs lol, i always hated the complaints of TvP until i watched how best worked the lategame with a heavy macro style and that lesson has stuck with me into sc2 and now when i play i play sc2 PvZ the same way i played bw PvT (harass that you don't have to care about just to distract while the real point is in the army movements as the harass causes the opponent to move his army out of position slightly giving you an ability to trade as evenly as possible (though typically still inefficiently lol)) i also remember reading an interview on skt's coach where he basically said best was the better player in terms of strategy and planning while bisu was only talented at multitasking and micro, and the reason bisu did so well was because he was able to learn best's builds and apply his multitasking and micro to them. the only things best ever lacked (dohsairs Q_Q)

BW mirror matchups were beautiful spectacles to watch PvP the tacticians arrive with flashy reavers and a whirlwind of storms ZvZ the gods of micro show up with their perfectly microed lings (i'm ignoring the build order wins/losses because JvZ showed that those don't really exist if you played it perfectly) and stacks of mutas sniping down scourge TvT an arena for strategists, though they were known for taking forever TvT was often likened to a game of chess where each player slowly gained strategic grounds and split the map occasionally ending with powerful air armies clashing and yamato cannons being thrown off everywhere don't dis those matchups they were so incredibly fun to watch and each had it's own style of play which made each special
