Backstory: During IPL3, an SC2 tournament, the internet in the venue died. Because SC2 has no LAN mode, this meant the tournament had to be put on hold. To kill time, HuK (an A- rank with Terran on ICCUP apparently, as well as an SC2 pro on Team Liquid, now EG) decided to play BW against Boxer. This was broadcast over a phone camera, to the interest of the BW community.
So I thought you guys might be interested to know that SC2 commentator HD Starcraft got a hold of the replay, and casted it.
I don't know, thought you'd like it. The commentary's aimed at introducing BW to SC2 fans, so it's maybe not the highest level, but it's still kind of neat.
Not to diss on Huk, but I'm pretty sure HDStarcraft is misinformed when he said Huk was an A- player. If I remember correctly, Huk said it himself that he was like B- player (which is still pretty awesome), but not quite an A- player. All A rank players were pretty known in foreign BW community.
Besides that, there were also a few blunders in HD Starcraft's cast (like saying you couldn't OBS games in BW and had to be a Terran player and lift your c&c to obs), but all is forgiven because seeing such a popular figure in SC2 community cast some BW action again is damn awesome!
More on topic, Huk had that game. If only he handled the Boxers 2nd drop better while he was attacking and didn't lose like 20 probes to only couple of vults and a tank (to be honest, I would've lost just as many probes myself vs Boxer lol).
Still, pretty fun game. Would be really nice to see more showmatches like these
It's a play around game, HuK and Boxer were bored during the down time and HuK shouted to Boxer, "play me in broodwar", laughing. It's not super serious business so don't be disappointed

I think Huk is the only name SC2 player to not have previously played another RTS (BW or War3) at a high level, so that sounds about right.

We should tweet people and try to make this happen. I want to see Artosis vs Idra BW suddenly.

Don't think it happened during the drop, but still funny imo

How does the Terran scan? Is there an OC or something else?
If the building is only in yellow health range (moderately damaged) then it will show as on fire but won't take damage, if it's in red health (very damaged) then yeah it takes damage over time.
Arbiters do cloak units, scan is from the comsat station which is an addon you put on the Command Center.

Yes. Only units, not building. There's a specific add on on the CC, which requires an academy to be built.
Pretty cool, even though the game is not exactly the best... Yeah, I know Boxer <3 etc etc

Same as SC2; but the fire animation can start a bit before the building is low enough to burn down. (Protoss buildings also catch fire in SC1, but that's purely cosmetic)
Those "Arbiters" I think they were called. Do those cloak like Mothership does?
Not quite; they only cloak units, not buildings. They have recall (which is a bit weaker than the mothership's Mass Recall, but arbiters are much cheaper and you can have several at a time), and Stasis Field, which freezes units in crystals
How does the Terran scan? Is there an OC or something else?
Comsat Station, an add-on to the Command Center. It doesn't do anything else (no mules), so BW Terrans scan a lot more than SC2 Terrans because there's nothing else to do with the energy. I think the BW scan reveals less area, but I'm not sure. It reveals quite a bit, though, and it detects like the SC2 scan.

Yes, it if catches on fire it will burn down slowly.
Yes thats where the cloaking from the mothership came from.
Addon to the CC, like on the barracks/factory/starport. Called Proximity Scan when used, also had a different addon to the CC where nukes came from.

Works perfectly for me, and there's a Blizzard fix for the colour glitch as well It shows that Boxer hasn't played BW in a while haha, it was weird to watch; fun match though.

It takes some finessing.
Run game ctrl+shift+esc Kill "explorer.exe" in task manager Play game that now runs fine Start new process "explorer.exe" in task manager to get your taskbar back.
Just finished. Yeah, Boxer was rusty as hell. Huk just seemed lost after his 2 base push failed. He didn't even bother to pull his probes off the line and just let them all die at the expansion to 1 tank. That random reaver drop at Boxer's 2nd when he basically had his entire force camped there was funny.
This is pretty cool, I really enjoyed HD casting broodwar again. I hope he does more token BW casts like this, I think it could be a great way for all these people who have only played SC2 to appreciate BW.
I think, from what I remember, is that Boxer was having a lot of problems because the hotkeys were different? I remember that's what was being said.

I'm sure HuK was pretty decent judging by his breakout SCII Beta performance. He'd be able to get pretty high on ICCUP if he actually tried. He'd still get raped to death by Koreans though.
I remember HuK saying something along the liens of "I want to be Boxer" during Beta and the next game I see him go 4 gates and add a 5th gate. So creative HuK
HuK is a funny guy. I guess you had to be a funny guy to have to play PvP before they killed the 4 gate.
Why are people hating lol, guy plays a game that he hasnt played in a long time (which is very rough after not playing), getting some exposure for BW, and yall bitch about his skill level.
it was all good and fun but some facts: 1. first game i owned really quickly with ez build and nice micro 2. payam (tt1) was my coach and was very good 3. jessica never coached me, she only cheated for boxer and tried to hinder my abilities 4. i was A- in bw as terran on iccup (was my highest, barely, and wouldn't of held it for any decent amount of time), it was all in good fun in the end and boxer on regular conditions and both in shape would destroy me i think

Anyway, I don't watch much BW (WoL is what got me into RTS/eSports) but I remember seeing the Boxer - HuK matches when Internet was down at IPL3 and its nice to see one of them getting a proper cast as opposed to a shaky over-the-shoulder view. For what this game lacked in tension, importance and skill (compare to what they have at the OSL / SPL) it was still a really nice treat for us WoL fans.

Yep, Jessica covered Huk's eyes at some points, it was hilarious. This replay was published almost immediately back then, so I've studied the game already - but where's the replay from the other game, and why isn't that game cast at least?

How the hell could a pro like HuK, especially one more micro and control focused instead of super tactical 1.5 hour game every time he plays on shakuras like a few people (i doubt he would do that even if he was terran) be D+? Ive seen people play at that level and it is pretty horrible to watch
I think Huk is the only name SC2 player to not have previously played another RTS (BW or War3) at a high level, so that sounds about right.
As far as I know, Huk's RTS experience came from Company of Heroes. He was held in high regard in that community and his replays were downloaded quite a bit. He achieved "expert" which is considered top level.

Well, its in the tradition of GOMTvT tournaments. And mostly because it was both their main in BW.
But more generally the idea of a HuK Idra BW showmatch makes my inner fangirl giggle.

I have tried to watch SCBW matches before and could not understand them for the life of me. After playing SC2 since release I finally start to see what is happening. I will probably be checking more BW games later.
It's worth noting that they played two games, and huk won the first one. I don't remember what it was though, I think it was a one or two base timing that killed boxer while he was expanding? My memory is very vague.

It was a 10/15 gate on some map that was REALLY good for it.
Tried looking up Huk's clan and ign on iccup rankings, didn't have any luck. :/
Ranks on iccup were a lot harder than on sc2. Given that the community is/was significantly smaller (and is shrinking even more now sadly), there was something like ~10 people ranked A or higher. I'd personally say getting A on iccup is probably equivalent, or harder to top 8 GM in a division.
Wonder why my B- (given it was for 2 days) didn't translate into SC2 gosu

I just want to point out that this incident is not an argument for sc2 lan. While there have been plenty of situations with problems that do call for LAN, a truck driving into the internet is not one. They didn't consider that when they decided on no LAN. There have been numerous incidents that wouldn't have happened with LAN in the past 18 months, but random completely unpredictable major incidents like this shouldn't be ammo for anyone going "OMFG LAN" unless they're joking. This shit is once in a million. It's like arguing that I'm not protected against lightning strikes on my way to work, so I should invest in a faraday cage.
But anyway, this was a great thing. The problem I have with broodwar is it's just so inaccessible to a casual watcher. I've watched a couple of sayle's casts and they're certainly pretty good, but they're aimed at pleasing the BW community as well as including newbies so they can't cover every little thing, whereas HD made lots of unit-unit comparisons and such. (Plus I never seem to be on TL when sayle's streaming)
I remember in a SotG episode where Huk said he was A- (confirmed my Incontrol i think) and that he beat Idra (in bw) so i think thats where HD got the idea

I love watching BW games! The emphasis on mechanics and APM management is what I see (as a casual BW viewer) as the defining difference between the two games.
At any rate, It's good to see SC2 casters bringing BW into the spotlight.

You think that's crazy? ForGG doesn't hotkey his production buildings. He actually goes back to his base every 30 seconds and builds out of them individually like in BW.

Last I knew, Huk was D+... I remember playing him a few times and I never dropped a game to him. I was C+ max...
How the hell could a pro like HuK, especially one more micro and control focused instead of super tactical 1.5 hour game every time he plays on shakuras like a few people (i doubt he would do that even if he was terran) be D+? Ive seen people play at that level and it is pretty horrible to watch
Meh, if HuK is Nex-Retribution then I remember playing him back in the day and he wasn't that great... bare in mind this was probably close to 4 years ago.
Not hating on HuK, but around the time I quit playing BW he wasn't that great... still though if he practiced a bunch and what not and was coached by TT1, then I could see him rising up to a higher rank... why not?
It's cool to say you beat a pro gamer way back in the day, but it really doesn't mean much lol. Just shows you how far they've come and... makes you ask what you've been doing with your life haha.

Old habits must die hard; is he still faster at doing that than people who use hotkeys?

I heard from somewhere that both of them had issues with the different hotkeys. Maybe that played a small factor.
It really does throw people off when half the hotkeys on right side of the keyboard after playing a game where the majority of the hotkeys are on the left side.
P for Probe 4 lyfe
pppppppppppppppppp
Didn't HuK say he hotkeys 0 to Nexus and P for probe in SC2 because of BW in a Day9 daily?

No he doesn't. (ForGG)
The only thing he is doing is that he hotkeys 2 orbitals on 9 and 0, and use only scans there.
The other command centers he doesnt have hotkeyed. And he is using them for mules.

Ok so this might be a silly question but was Boxer A or A+ (if there is such a thing) ?
Naz-
BoxeR transcended the ranking system. I'm pretty sure he hit Olympic on iCCup smurf accounts from what I remember, but he's one of the greatest BW players of all time and can't really be ranked on the same scale as a B-
edit: Olympic being higher than A+
Well technically it was the same rank, but the icon was awarded for reaching 15000 points.(it carried the same weight as if you were A+ i mean)
Not to burst your bubble guys but Savior and Flash were/are the only Bonjwas .. Boxer was definitely not one of them. Some can argue Jaedong and iloveoov.

The accepted list is Boxer, Iloveoov, Nada, Savior, and Flash.

Is this a fact or personal opinion? I'm not claiming to be knowledgeable in the ways of BW, but I do like learing about the history of competitive gaming. I've spend time reading Chobopeon's StarCraft Bible and TL's Liquipedia and they tell me a different story.

It's only one making the statement that he isn't, I'm asking a question. And one providing some information. I wouldn't call it arguing.
Calling us all "noobs" is pretty unwelcoming. Especially to individuals trying to show they have a genuine interest in Starcraft history.
I wasnt talking about you. To answer your previous question, it is pretty much fact as bonjwas were crowned by the Korean community and commentators. Savior was given the title bonjwa first, then Boxer, Nada and iloveoov was given retrospectively. Flash wasnt called bonjwa by koreans, he is above bonjwa as he is called 'God'. Yea, kinda weird call him that but there you go.
I would say by today's standards (after the release of SC2 and hence the decrease in player numbers on iCCup) that this is even worse than C- level, but that is beside the point. Wave of nostalgia right here, ex-BW SC2 pros should have fun matches like these more often :D

p.s. Im in a nasty mood today for odd reasons...
My apologies also, the cold weather and lack of sleep made me a bit edgy. Thanks for information, I did not know about the Flash <> "god" part yet.
On a side-note, as a proud owner of one of the Jim Raynor USB sticks, which contains BW, I've now started playing BW. After watching several hours of BW on the stream of - nanashin - I felt the need to feel how BW plays nowadays. I say nowadays, as I did play all Starcraft campains, back in the day, just never the multi-player.
Didnt seem to me like any of them were playing seriously, so you cant really rank the game on any scale in my opinion. But super funny to watch, played brood war myself though never really enough to get good at it.

boxer wasnt the most dominant bonjwa but he was definitely one. i would say iloveoov was probably the most dominant one with winning tvz like 50 straight or something like that and the other MU were like above 80% . iloveoov macro style pave the way for nada to win the most championship. your missing a few bonjwas.

neither of them played bw in years thats why, boxer was reluctant to even play at first
