Never being able to see MSL live....
Forum Index > BW General |
Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it.

A major media company in Korea, SC2 is thriving in the west. I'm not trying to be rude or cause any trouble, but I can't see how this would effect SC2 or E-sports in general. Yea it may be dying in Korea but ESPORTS is thriving throughout the rest of the world Foreign eSports? For now. Just like foreigner BW in the early days, it will die down. Foreigners love the latest/shiny stuff. Exactly. Do you honestly think SC2 is thriving globally? It's very unstable to build a business on top of a single game anyway since games constantly evolve over time and this is why Starcraft BW in Korea is so amazing. SC2 just smells like a fad and I doubt it will become huge. Yea it may be dying in Korea but ESPORTS is thriving throughout the rest of the world Foreign eSports? For now. Just like foreigner BW in the early days, it will die down. Foreigners love the latest/shiny stuff. Also there's a massive difference in the business of it. Here primarily tech companies sponsor and advertise in eSports so they can sell computer/console apparel to gamers. In Korea they advertise things you'd see during any normal sporting event, everyday stuff. True, true. If foreign esports has even a toothpaste ad or even a retail outlet ad or something along mainstream lines(cant think of examples, sleepy), I wouldn't call the western scene legit in terms of sustainability. These are exactly why this is bad for BW, SC2 and ESPORTS. The foreigner eSports scene is indeed a joke, as it is now. Aside from SC2 it is no more popular than it has been anytime in the past years, and even the SC2 sponsors are the same ones that traditionally sponsored every other game that has been popular for a short time and then disappeared. The problem with these sponsors, is that they MUST promote newer games in place of the old ones in order to sell their products, it is a system that inherently cannot be sustainable. MBC, being a pillar of the BW model, represented an economic model that was upheld by sponsors, in who's interests was not to intentionally break an existing eSports scene in order to make way for every new game that comes out. While I find it honestly hard right now to even care what happens to eSports in general, in lew of the effects of this on BW, I find it hard to believe that people do not see that the 'thriving foreigner scene', that people are looking to light the way of eSports, is exactly what it looked like a decade or more ago, the exact system that has failed to promote anything even resembling a sustainable eSport to date.

Yeah, if anyone remembers how Counter-Strike was at its prime, the current SC2 scene is pretty much a carbon copy of it. Some sponsored teams, lots of online tournaments and ladders, a few major events per year. Only the online content delivery technology has evolved since then, international eSports is still pretty much the same, i.e. very little advancement in the past decade.

If sc2 scene doesn't survive in THIS country, then how do you think it will fare in other countries??? Perhaps TV is no longer the mainstream media in Korea... there is a shift towards the internet in all media and this is just the beginning. This is not a sign of ESPORTS dying you are tools to think that. As the internet becomes the major hub for all types of media-related events, ESPORTS will only become more popular, it's inevitable.

And if what most of you are saying turns out to be true what will happen with our beloved TL community. Considering BW is pretty much dead, and from what everyone else is saying the soon to be SC2 death after it there would be no re4ason to continue having this site. Thing with that is that people are exaggerating because they're upset. Starcraft isn't eSports. Starcraft is just a part of it. There's so many other games that are still out there, and just cause it's big in Korea and it's broadcast on TV doesn't mean much to eSports as a whole tbh. BW was pretty much an anomaly. It was the biggest part of eSports, but that doesn't mean that losing a Starleague means everything is going to collapse and eSports will be no more. That's like pretty arrogant actually, that's saying that eSports will never be able to survive without BW when internationally you have MLG who had Halo, CoD, Tekken, R6V, etc etc and it was doing fine without Starcraft. Maybe the scene will die in Korea, but it will live on elsewhere. Let's face it, we all knew BW wasn't going to last forever. If it does die soon, then well it sucks but it had an amazing run. A run that will most likely never be matched. Also to the people calling K-Pop evil, well, it's not evil, MBC is. But hopefully we can get some more BW events though. Maybe MLG can try and hold an event. BW alongside SC2 in America maybe (but they'd have to invite BoxeR and NaDa to that event cause it just has to happen). I dunno I don't want BW to die after all. Not just yet at least. I hope something good happens.

Right... there were a million viewers watching CS matches in real time throughout the world. If you think about it, the online content delivery technology is what will drive e-sports to become more popular.. things have changed.
