MBCGame to shut down? - Page 17

Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it.

I'm sure that is a huge factor, but putting BW side by side to any game today and expecting someone who knows very little about it to enjoy it is a stretch. The article says nothing is decided yet and is very much in a preliminary stage. The article also mentions that the articles which have been published yet are very much exaggerating the matter as of the moment. Yes, they are probably partially right. Still, something will change by the end of the year.

Viewership ratings isn't the reason why MBC channel might be closing down.

Wow I can't describe how bad this is for BW in general. Proleague now with OSL only... I'm going to guess MBC Game team will be on the cut too... -.- Noooooo...

+ Show Spoiler + 1. OGN stands up and takes on the broadcasting of games 2. Other teams' sponsors, seeing the BW scene as nearly dead, decide to disband their teams 3. Other players seeing that, afraid of losing their own jobs, start planning for retirement 4. In the end, the whole BW scene is more dead than alive The process might differ, but in the end it will be the end of BW scene. No matter how you look, this is a very discouraging news.

I know its not that popular in Korea, but still, all that infrastructure for gaming getting shifted into a music channel? Maybe another BW gaming organization bought the gaming related sections, like Hero? I fear this could be the death of Brood War as we know it, or at least the beginning of the end of Korea's BW scene. To put it this way, MBCGame was one of the two main channels (OnGameNet being the second) that broadcasted professional Starcraft: Brood War matches and both the MSL, OSL and Proleague tournaments. Now, there are only 2 game channels left, it being OngameNet -which was the first gaming channel to open- and Anibox - which changed its genre to game& animation this 8th of July Perhaps Anibox could be filling in the void that MBCGame had left? The ASL anyone? Personally, I think the Blizzard-KeSPA thing probably did fuck things up majorly for both parties: On Blizzard's side SC2 is not really struggling but not gaining that large a following in South Korea with only one major tournament around. On the competitive gamer's side, sure they won't need to work their ass off for a progamer licence but there will be a lack of opportunities to make money from gaming in SK (which is why I think many Koreans have willingly gone to foreign teams) On KeSPA's side, they have no jurisdiction over regulating the SC2 scene and this could be both a blessing and a curse. Just look at the whole PuMa fiasco.
