this is aweomse, thanks. i'll let you know what i know after i go through them all but good work either way. though if you're feeling like super awesome you could upload them onto blip as well in one peice per match that way we all can watch them as single peices rather than 2 per match.

Update, after watching one of your vods i must say they are decnt, though not s calibur as day9, but that will take some time anways. you tend to try to be uber clear, like almost robotic at times. it reminds me of someone reading aloud but nervous whiel doing it. just try to be more natural and take a breather, try to let your personality seep into the cast and into your voice. other than that you caught things pretty well and you did a pretty good job.

so i watched 5 minutes of part 2 of game 1 and here is some constructive criticism that i have.

1. sometimes you seem to be very nervous and stutter a bit. if you are afraid that you won't know what to say during your commentary, then try watching the game and practicing a bit to yourself so that you are more confident in your casting. after a while you should get the hang of it and be better at speaking on the fly.

2. you seem to be a very play by play commentator from the few minutes that i've seen. i.e. "hydras do a lot of damage to wraiths" "one scourge lands" these comments are nice if your viewers do not play BW, but i think you should try to describe a bit more what the players' goals and strategies are (wraiths harassing/picking up drones while building up M&M and vessel to push/expand or something; didn't actually watch the game but you get the idea)

3. maybe brush up a bit on game knowledge. "scourge do splash damage" imba or what? this is the main criticism i have with many new english commentators nowadays like that jaberwalk guy (i stopped watching a few minutes into hiya vs violet b/c he didn't even realize how fast the interceptors were going down to M&M and kept saying hiya was losing and wondering why violet was keeping carriers from engaging (hint: no interceptors))

Ugh yea jaberwalker needs a bit more background knowledge. Having watched almost every cholera, diggity, moletrap, klazart, rise cast, I'm pretty sure I'd make a decently good commentator, as I remember so much of the stuff the other casters say. Unfortunately, im in HS, and my parents wont let me cast -____-. Maybe next year guys haha, if BW is still around ill start casting.

Nuke is getting better, and I can't emphsaize how happy I am to see more BW commentators - I thought it was gonna die, but I hope that jaberwalk/this guy/ (me?) can become the next generation of casters, gaining experience over time...

I am thinking of doing some casting myself for the LONGEST time but I always fear what others will say about my knowledge of the game. So I totally get why the stuttering for this guy. He seems to know the general flows of the game but just need to work on the "entertainment value" factor. There are too much repetitive words throwing out there like "Unfortunately" and "I think". But its great for first time commentating. In the near future, this will keep me motivated into buying a good mic and cast like top 5 games of week. Props to you!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I think as long as there are people out there willing to watch BW commentaries, I'll keep doing this!

Now that SC2 has become such a mainstream game, I believe people need to look at the roots and this will provide a larger fanbase for BW. If I'm able to make people more aware about BW, then I think I've made a difference.

I strongly encourage other people to take up commentating if they have a passion like me!

Actually nvm, I can hear you fine in the main game, it's just hard to hear you in the pregame over the sound of the fans. Overall though I'd like everything a little louder, it's annoying to have to turn my sound all the way up to hear you

Unfortunately a lot of what they said is out of date now; I do not think commentating ability is proportional to hours of SC games you've watched with an English caster.

Second best way to gain game knowledge is to watch games asking why is player X doing Y constantly as well as getting a feel for how many units can kill how many other units. (i.e. if 16 dragoons [really big looking force, very intimidating] engage 20 hydras[sleek and fast, but puny], who will win on open field, in a choke etc.) It's one of the hardest things to get a feel for when you don't play the game enough, or even take a break from it for too long.

Best way is obviously to play the game at a level where it's no longer mechanics that separate you and your opponent but strategy.

i definitely agree that casting games is wayyyy different from having game knowledge. much more comes into play with casting, including your ability to recall knowledge on the spot, speak clearly, talk in a level tone, give map, player and tournament backgrounds while still concentrating on what's happening in the actual game, be able to give reasonable predictions as to what will happen next and how important certain battles are for the rest of the game as well as making casts entertainable and enjoyable. it's definitely not something that you're automatically good at, even if you have amazing knowledge of the game.

not trying to say you wouldn't be a good caster, but that it's not as easy as you think. give it a try though. as everyone else has said, more bw casters are always good for the scene

I think other people have some spot on criticism. Game knowledge is important. Like saying an extra expansion will give an economic advantage isn't the most helpful info. Saying why he was able to get that up is. I think newer BW followers will benefit most, and enjoy it more, if you're bringing them information that isn't plainly on the screen. Obviously play-by-play stuff is important at certain times, but broader decision-making is more meaningful for the most part.

Another thing a good commentary should have is more advanced. You could spend some time talking about the players. Talk about how their moves are indicative of their style or how they've been playing recently. Compare interesting things to previous games. One of the biggest selling-points of BW is that it is constantly changing. Seeing strategies rise and fall is very interesting and fulfilling. I guess what I'm saying is that you should put the game in some context.

Finally, I want to say that what you're doing is really positive. English commentary is really great for people just picking up on the scene. We have had such a big influx of new TL members since SC2 and I'm pleased to see so many finding out how interesting BW is. More English commentaries will certainly help. Keep at it. I applaud the effort.
