Not sure if this has been done before, but here's a list of Chinese nicknames and their background. I see sometimes translators have trouble with them. Also, some are kind of funny in general. Their nicks in Chinese at the very end.
Note that some players are simply referred to by their names. Others as "brother <insert name>", i.e. firebathero as "brother fire". So I'm leaving those out.
The Sect of Turtling 猥琐神教
Sect Leader: Flash 教主 Left-hand man: Mind 左使/护法 Right-hand man: Sea 右使/护法
Note 0: The idea originated from the days of Flash's anti-carrier build and kicking Stork's ass. Some guy even made a song on the topic. And cemented their positions. Page 4 has a quick translation of the topic.
Note 1: Mind and Sea are usually called by their ids. Whereas Flash is always referred to as Sect Leader. Sea is also called "Big Head Sea".
Note 2: Other terrans would "join" the sect whenever their play becomes really, really turtlish. But Flash, Mind, and Sea are the established leaders of the religion for their consistent macro-oriented play
Edit: Bogus apparently belongs in the sect too.
SKT1 Special : Fan Bing Bing
![[image loading]](http://image.xinmin.cn/2009/01/04/20090104125328928955.jpg)
Fan Bing Bing is a Chinese actress. Her initials are F.B.B. I'm sure SKT1 fans can guess the connection quite quickly.
Fantasy: Crown Prince - seemingly self-explanatory 太子,范太子
Best: Beast - self-explanatory 禽兽
Bisu: Master Bi(pronounced Bee)必老爷
Had an old nick "Mr. Ximen" 西门大官人 that doesn't seem to be used anymore. Story in spoilers to not take up space. + Show Spoiler +The name refers to a minor but well known character in the Water Margin. In one back story, that of Wu Song, his older brother's wife cheated on him with a rich guy. That guy was Mr. Ximen. If you want to know more about the story, google "Pan Jin Lian" or "Pan Jinlian" should yield the stories. This small story kind of took off later on, and was used as plot for several porn films. And apparently some guy realized that the actor who played in one looked a lot like Bisu. ![[image loading]](http://pic.wenwen.soso.com/p/20090701/20090701224404-571184946.jpg) And that's the origin of why Bisu was often called Mr. Ximen, or Bonjwa Ximen. The character's name does tend to allude to lewd behavior of screwing a married woman, hence why it's so funny when spoken in Chinese.
Note: The term FBB, almost always used in proleague matches, was mainly back in the days when SKT1 was dominating and Fantasy/Bisu/Best pretty much owned. There was a short time when Fantasy and best got into slumps, while Canata played really well. And so Canata/Bisu then formed a short-lived "Bai Chi" team. Which means the 'idiot team'. Not really to discredit Canata and Bisu, but I think they just had to find another Chinese term that matches the initials of T1 players playing well.
The Bonjwas 本座
s2: The Retarded Bonjwa. Retarded in Chinese starts with the sound "s" 傻本
FrOzean: crappy angel, crappy bonjwa. 菜天使,菜本
Odin: Pig Bonjwa. This title has since been passed on to Juni since his retirement. Yes, people can be quite mean... 猪本
The dragons
Stork: Stone(Stork's pronunciation is similar to Chinese pronunciation of stone, plus it describes his style as very safe and hard to counter), Flawless Commander, "Number Two for Ten Thousand Years" - passed down from a certain zerg who was originally "Number Two for Ten Thousand Years" 万年老二,无缺点总司令,石头
free - "Brother Light". Long background. It actually has nothing to do with Light the player. Light refers to a board user to was basically the only true free fan back when free was in purgatory with Hanbit. He would talk about how awesome free was when no one else cared. So free's Chinese nick actually has 0% to do with his play or Korean name. Lately his new nick has been "Mistress Light", due to his new moniker pretty. 灯哥,灯娘
JangBi - Zhang Fei, the Chinese name for Jangbi. Usually used in conjunction with adjectives that describe a great attacker for both his style and that of his namesake. 张飞
Kal - Nothing. They call him Kal... That said, for Kal fans, the Chinese name the PvZ BO where the protoss goes Stargate->Robo->Reaver->Templar style as the Kal Build
Much: old dragon 老龙
Other terrans
sKyHigh: 4-ugly: Can't remember the exactly the exact ones, but I believe ugly micro, ugly macro, ugly game sense, ugly looks.... whoever came up with this one probably wasn't a fan. 四差人族
BoxeR: Old Man Bao, Bao hyung 老包,包哥
Really: Bastard Child - due to his estro days when he keeps getting sent to ace matches and losing. Hence, he must be the coach's bastard child to get such favorable treatment. Other players have also been known to be called bastards if they get sent to ace matches and losing. Zero and great I believe were known to also be called this at times 私生子
Edit(additions by others): Light: AK-Light, or Passerby Light. Differentiating between his SL play and PL play, as well as his TvZ vs TvP.
Leta: 如花(pronounced ru hua) literally translates to "Like a Flower". The character was from a Chinese comedy movie. Pics below. Open at your own risk. + Show Spoiler +
Other Protosses
Nal_rA: Da-Ma, which sound similar to Nal_ra. The name denotes a way of calling an older woman whom you respect a lot. I'm not sure what's a good English term for it. But suffice to say that despite the gender alteration, it's a nickname that shows a lot of respect and love. 大妈. Note that White_ra is called White Da-Ma in China, a nickname based off of Nal_ra. 白大妈
Reach: Hero Protoss. No explanation necessary.
Movie: Teacher Chen. 陈老师 Thanks for Emlary(post below) for the origin of the term: I'm pretty sure Movie got his Chinese nickname Teacher Chen not because of his look but the porn photo scandal of Hong Kong pop star Edision Chen. The similarity is "Movie" and how Edison Chen loved to film his sex life into actual movie tapes. And "Teacher" is for sarcasm.
Horang2: More well known in China than he should be given that he went to one of their tournaments. Because he was so young then, commentators usually call him "little friend Horang". Also, the number 2 spoken in Chinese also sounds the same as a term for screwing up. So whenever Horang2 fails, they'd note the fact that there's a "2" at the end of his name.
Edit(additions from others): Stats - god of greed for his greedy play. 神偷
Paralyze: Exploding Head 爆炸头
Other Zergs
Jaedong: Demon King 大魔王
EffOrt: Martian 火星
sAviOr: Bonjwa Ma 马本座
July: Fat guy 胖子
Luxury: Older Brother 他哥 Yarnc: Younger Brother 他弟
Shine: Fake Kal 假卡儿
Hyuk: General hyuk or h-y-u-k pronounced. The commentators generally have somewhat of a sarcastic tone regarding overselling hyuk, due to the fact that Lx and PJ both talked about how awesome his talent is. They said hyuk's APM was mind-boggling, and he had the multi-tasking needed to text messages and play a game at the same time. 胡克大将军
great: head honcho - old nick mainly due to the fact that he kept getting sent to ace matches on a team that featured Jangbi, Stork, and FBH. At first I believe it was mainly used in somewhat of sarcastic tone. Lately he's also been called turtle zerg 头牌 Edit(additions by others)
by.hero: little fat
Kwanro: big handsome man - obviously being sarcastic 管若大帅哥
Edit 2: More additions
(P)Snow = 冰河: "Glacier", taken from the chinese name of Cygnus Hyōga from Saint Seiya.
(Z)HoGiL = 火鸡: "Turkey", Hogil and turkey in mandarin sounds similar. When he loses the commentators sometimes refer to him as being 'roasted'.
(T)HiyA = 金鱼: "Goldfish", you can hazard a guess on that one lol.

Those are some really interesting names. Thanks for this!
Basically some guy on the forums posted a picture of porn actress which looked almost exactly like Bisu
Fix'd jkjk lol
|
Really interesting to know, especially free's.
|
Bogus is also considered a part of the sect of turtle terrans,
Light has been called AK Light for his all kills in winners league and "passerby" Light for his invisibility
Action is called the scorpion king, since defilers are called scorpions in chinese, Action got this for his great use of defilers, see Flash vs Action
Kwanro is "Sexy guy Kwanro", dont know if that was a forum joke or what, also "the world's best early Game", "10 minute invincibility" for his ling rushes
Leta is called "ru hua" literally:"like a Flower" , (edit: ruhua=girl who looks like guy see google images, thanks people for correcting me), can you think of any reasons? (see msl ceremony)
ToSsGirL is "goddess of war", being the best female in the sport, also to contrast July 's "god of war"
|
Didn't know that about Bogus, mainly because I don't really watch STX matches and he's not good enough to play the SLs. Thanks for putting up Light's nick, forgot about him despite being one of the better players around.
I don't know about the origins of Leta's nick. But Kwanro's nick was definitely used in somewhat of a sarcastic manner.

honestly, i understand where you are coming from, OP, but there's reason why they are in chinese and not english, because they lose so much meaning when translated over to english.
on a side note, nice effort, but most of them are really poorly translated.

it was a fun read. haha very very interesting
|
i'm pretty sure i've heard them call hero from stx little fat guy

Shine = fake Kal? I don't get that :S

Definitely useful stuff, though I'd recommend putting the Chinese names next to theme as well just for reference. I remember getting stuck on Movie's name for a long time and I wouldn't have figured it out if someone hadn't told me.

Stats = sheng tou = godly stealing/greed for his tendency to 12 nexus in pvt and build hella probes w/o an army.

Isn't it 陈老实 instead of Teacher Chen?

Isn't Zhang Fei that one guy from Romance of the Three Kingdoms? And Jangbi is Zhang Fei in Korean?

Haha, interesting nicknames, Really's Chinese nickname definitely took the cake for me, lolz.
Thanks for the translations; they provide an insight to the obscure Chinese BW fandom out there. Btw, why are some players called "Brother [something]"? Is calling someone else "brother" like the same meaning as "hyung" in Korean, where the word just emphasizes seniority and respect for another, and not exactly blood relationship?
|

Flash: 教主 (Sect Leader) Stork: 石头 (Stone),万年老二 (forever second best) Bisu: 毕老爷 (old man Bee) BeSt: 野兽? (Beast) Much: 老龙 (Old dragon) Skyhigh: 四差 (Four bad/ugly)
Wow this makes me realize how few of the chinese nicknames I actually have a good grasp on >_<. Haven't watched enough VODs with chinese commentating :\
@"Brother": it's just kind of a term of endearment for someone familiar, not necessarily having the same connotation as 'hyung'

Google image the term 'ruhua'. You will get the answer straight.

Iris = 性感: "Sexy", from Sexy Terran.
and as mentioned before, alot of these are much more funny in chinese.

edited in some more players. Thanks for the contributions. Especially emlary with the nice background story on movie.
And yes, I know some stuff gets left out in translation. But still, I generally find it interesting that they nickname everyone.

Does the "turtle sect" have something to do with the "Ming Cult" of Jin Yong kung fu film ? They look similar to me.

I think i've heard references to jing yong from some commentators, but usually refering to the sun moon holy cult from the smiling proud wanderer, specifically dong fang bu bai, but its mostly in passing.
I think Flash originally got the sect leader title after he demonstrated his anti-carrier build, and flash build, I think it was during that time that his late game high upgrade timing push caused the idea of the turtle sect to be born, this was especially highlighted in his game vs zero this year where he infamously made 108 turrets.

Correct.
On December 26 2010 20:37 Kyuukyuu wrote: @"Brother": it's just kind of a term of endearment for someone familiar, not necessarily having the same connotation as 'hyung'
I've always thought that hyung and aneki(in Japanese) all originated from the Chinese term 'ge' as a term of endearment/respect for an older male. Even if there are no blood relations.
Obviously the usage is discretionary depending on the locale and who's using it. But still, I think the concepts are similar for all the terms.

It has been speculated that the "sun moon holy cult" and the "Ming cult" are one of the same.
日月神教 明教
Put 日月 together and you get 明. So yea, they are most likely the same. But I think in this case it's more-or-less referring to "Ming cult", which as the more elaborate structures.

Not sure if its being mentioned before but Nada's nick was Nai da which is Chinese for big tits or boob.

Very appreciative of this!
Martian, 万年老二, lololol

Wow~ Jaedong has the sexiest nickname. Demon King!

Some additional nicks:
Horang2 - 虎狼 tiger-wolf, this might be what it means in Korean? At least that's what it sounds like in Chinese.
Sea - 大头海 big head sea. He has a big head.
Jaedong - 解冻 thawing, 激动 excited (they just sound similar)
Fantasy - 范特西 named after one of Jay Chow's albums, titled "Fantasy"
Canata - 加哥 Brother Canada, because Canata sounds like Canada
ZerO - 小零 little ZerO (little is almost the opposite of brother)
Classic - 经典 literally means classic
Always thought EffOrt as "Mars" (it's funnier) rather than "Martian", but I guess Martian could be implied.
|
They called Fantasy 搔饭 as well sometimes. I can't think of a word to describe its connotative meaning at the time, but its literal meaning is "harassing fantasy", coming from his vulture plays obviously.

I don't think the Sun Moon and Ming are the same, but then again, this is a subject of some speculation/debate.
In relation to Starcraft, it is definitely inspired by the structures from the Jin Yong novels, and with regard to Flash, the Ming cult from Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre, since Flash has been compared to Zhang Wuji before, where 萎缩神功 = 九阳神功.
Yes, the origins lie with the anti Carrier build, and some guy made a post titled "Turtling Sect Promotion," with a bunch of funny song parodies with lyrics rewritten to match; they're pretty hilarious if you know Chinese;

日 and 月 are particles for "明". I think it's pretty obvious there. There are good reasons for a change of name, but that's a debate for another day.

Quick (?) and liberal translation of that post:
The Cult of Turtling
Cult Leader: Flash
Left Guardian of Cult: Mind
Right Guardian of Cult: Sea
Cult Elder: Nada
Doctrine of the Cult:
- ALWAYS open a third base that has gas; don't scout, just go ahead and open it! If you want to turtle, make it pretty. - ALWAYS keep tanks in siege mode! Have three armories upgrading at the same time. Range, speed, EMP, whatever... upgrade all of them! - FULLY surround your mineral line with turrents; lay mine everywhere on your mineral line. Beside your base, put half a control group of goliath - with 3/3 upgrades! This way, it doesn't matter if your opponet's arbitor has energy (... the rest is weird so I skipped it...) - Get a control group of tanks on every expansion and open fog of war with an Engineering Bay. This way, every time your opponent tries to overtake your expansion, he will lose more than 100 food worth of army! - Hotkey all your comsats! Use Scanner Sweep every minute. This way, if your opponent goes for carriers, you can omgwtfbbq pwn him! - ONLY attack after you have 190-200 food! Moving out with anything else is PURE EMBARASSMENT! - The arts of this cult are mastered once the person can win every single game lamely (i.e. via turtling).
How long do you think a match takes? Twenty minutes? That's barely enough for a warm-up! Aim for at least forty minutes per game! Once you understand the psychology of a cultist who can manage to stay at his base for twenty minutes without pushing out, you will realize that staying for another twenty minutes is nothing.

I'd like to try and provide a better translation. His translations are correct but he didn't get the connotation across.
Stork's 万年老二 nick means "Second Child for 10000 years" And I think that word used for second Child "老二" to is quite informal. Like the difference between stupid and crackhead. But I'm not too sure.
There's a list of people who always get's second place and they are called 千年老二 Second Child for 1000 years. http://baike.baidu.com/view/1808487.htm
Bisu's 必老爷 means "Old grandfather Bi". 必 is pronounced bì. Respectful towards Bisu.
Stat's 神偷 means goldly stealing or sneakiness. "偷"can mean to steal while "偷偷"means sneakily
Luxury: 他哥 simply means "His older brother " Yarnc: 他弟 means His younger brother
Based on the explanation at http://bbs.plu.cn/archiver/tid-1033551.html
Earlier, Little YellOw was more famous, so when Luxury was playing, people would ask, "Isn't he YellOw?" Then people who knew would say "it's little YellOw's his older brother. (weird grammar here, I know but I'm trying to get the connotation)" And it spread. People didn't know how to pronounce Luxury and it wasn't easy to make it into Chinese sounds, so they started calling him "it's Little YellOw's his older brother". But it was too long, so they shortened it into "his brother" Later, Luxury became better and better while Little YellOw was having a decline, so everyone became more familiar with Luxury. So people would ask,"Who is this?" The reply was,"luxury's his younger brother" And hence (the term) "younger brother" was born.
great:头牌 means trump card
This not so important but I would translate all the 大 into great or grand. As in Kwanro's 管若大帅哥 as great smart handsome man Kwanro. or Hyuk's 胡克大将军 great general Hyuk. Jaedong would be Great Demon King.
What would Fantasy's 饭太子 mean? Rice prince?
Also, "猥琐" from 猥琐神教 (The Sect of Turtling) means something like "petty" or "low class" not sure of the meaning besides that it's definitely negative.
|

Fantaizi - transliteration of Fantasy maybe?

it's probably combining the literal translation with "prince"... tricky.
Bisu's 必老爷 means "Old grandfather Bi". 必 is pronounced bì. Not a nice way of calling grandfather either.
hmm, I thought Lao Ye is a term of respect?

I don't really know just how much people like/dislike turtling. I generally hate turtling, some many times I'm also in awe of it. Kind of "holy crap I can't believe you can goddamn win like this" type of thing. Besides, I don't want to get hate mails from Flash and Sea fans.

Not that I didn't read through the rest of your post, but didn't think there's much worthy enough to change.
For Fantasy, his name in Chinese was translated by sound, so it sounded like Fan-Tai-Xi. Of which the first word, 'fan', is most commonly the character 饭. Hence when people type in fan onto their chinese keyboard, that is the word that fist pops up. It has nothing to do with the word rice.
You seem to take a lot of the translations very literally. It's really not worth the effort. I translated it for fun and amusement. A lot of times it's just about getting what you feel is the similar term in the other language is, rather than literal translation.

Actually I never meant to use mine as a substitute for yours, but rather an extra description. In my opinion, reading in Chinese is funnier because of the choice of words used. For example, if when read "god of greed", I didn't laugh but when I saw神偷 I cracked up. Or how "万年第二" is different from "万年老二“ . For someone who never heard those terms before, it was very much funnier reading the chinese versions.
It's just like how exploding head is way funnier than what it actually means , which is afro head.
Hence, I'm trying to let others understand and laugh more at the choice of words used by them. It's like the difference between "noobie" and "My grandmother can beat him drunk".

Well, almost all of the nicknames came from Yu Xiaogang, a very famous and respected BW commentator in China, and he has a nickname "the starcraft Master of Asian-Pacific Region", because he is famous for his research and predictions on starcraft.
Many of the nicknames of the Korean players descrebing their game style, and many other are just for fun and easy to remember, coz it difficult to remember a Korean name or the English ID for Chinese people, and I think it is one kind of localization.

教主 = Cult Leader or Sect Leader, but it's referring to Flash.

"饭" is not a random character, Fantasy's initially nickname is "饭太稀", of course that's because the pronunciation "Fan-Tai-Si", but literally, that's a phrase which means when you cook rice, you put too much water so that the rice become thin gruel...

Actually Jaedong is now also frequently called the "Great Moe King"(大萌王), compared to the "Great Demon King"(大魔王), because he really got many moe photos and moe sounds like demon in chinese. Btw, I remember that the first time that Leta was called 如花 is when he pretend to perform a propose to the female anchor during one MSL grouping show(Sorry but I do not remember which one). when a player constantly gets proleague appearances despite perceived mediocre performance or reputation, he'll get called 私生子, as in the illegitimate child of the coach.
大魔王 is just demon, there is no need for "king." EffOrt has also been known as the martian demon in his day, because his playing style is highly aggressive and terrorizing, mirroring jaedong.
when a new player shows impressive performance, he'll get called 小强, meaning an upstart, but it also means roaches.
there are a bunch of bonjwa nicknames for really terrible players who are truly impressive in their terribleness.
s2 傻本 the Retard Bonjwa, for his often mindboggling dumbness. this guy is probably the 4th most popular player on T1 for his proficiency in tragic comedy.
n.Die_soO 输本 the Bonjwa of Losing. 输(loss) sounds like soo. he is quite bad, but does not have enough epic fail moments to overtake S2's reputation.
Killer 杀本 the Killing Bonjwa. pretty self explanatory. he is also called the little jaedong when he's doing well.
CuteAngel 菜本 the Noob Bonjwa. this nick is actually derivative of an older nick, 菜天使, the Noob Angel.
when giving a nickname, a general rule is to relate it to something perverted. examples:
M18M 毛18, 18摸 the Eighteen Touches, use your imagination on this one.
RorO 柔柔 Soft, alternatively, Massage. use your imagination on this one.
Modesty 摸的死你 Touch you until you die. alternatively, Just Touching and the Touch Bonjwa. imagination may not be sufficiently safe here.
Pure 纯洁 Pure Pure Boy, insinuating lack of experience. 神族内奸 Protoss Traitor, for being good at pvp but terrible at other matchups.
other players who are nicknamed for their looks.
Iris 性感 Sexy. No, i don't know why. reports that this is actually sarcasm is either confirmed or denied based on your personal feelings on the matter of iris's sex appeal.
Lomo 公公 Eunuch, for his effete looks.
Stats 鞋拔子 Shoehorn Face
some others:
PerfectMan 纯爷们 Pure Man, Essence of Manliness, Alpha as Fuck. self explanatory. he also has acquired honorary bonjwa status(the Perfect Bonjwa) largely on the strength of his name but also occasional and always unexpected good play.
PianO 菜琴 the Noob Piano. having entered the pro scene with a hefty reputation as one of three Amateur Bonjwas (the others being Mind and Ssak), piano immediately built a legacy of fail and is stuck with the noob title.
not sure about this one, but there seems to be 3 players named for main characters in saint seiya, and there are sSeiyaome well known seiya references in chinese commentary, such as the idea that "a warrior of athena won't fall for the same attack twice."
Violet Dragon Shiryū, because shiryu is literally the purple dragon in chinese.
Really Pegasus Seiya, because his amateur nick is seiya[gm]
Snow Cygnus Hyōga, because he's really cold.
some nicknames for legendary old players
NaDa 奶大 Babyface, also big boobs, 天才 genius
iloveoov 怪兽 monster, his playing style has been called 重剑无锋, the bladeless claymore, a reference to his strong strategic play that obliterates opponents without showing at first glance when and where the advantage is gained. it's a reference to a legendary weapon in chinese martial arts fantasy. since he's started to coach he's been referred to as the monster coach.
sAviOr has a lot of nicknames. 马监狱 Prisoner Ma, a play on his name Ma Jaeyoon which sounds close to jail in chinese. 马板凳 Benchwarmer Ma, back when he didn't receive a lot of proleague time.
XellOs 春哥 a reference to a masculine looking chinese singer, possibly most popular internet personality in china.
GARIMTO 战神 God of Battles (actually closer to "god of war" than july's nick, which means God of Combat)

Awesome stuff, thanks for the translation. I'm always a little curious about the Chinese scene seeing as they have so many fans and such big sites but it's sort of impenetrable for foreigners. Hey, take it easy man。~ Jaedong has many nickname like demon king, cute king blablabla, demon king just means similar to the devil, coz we think he was very domineering in the game,it's not a bad nickname。 He actually meant it as a compliment. You're actually taking the word badass the wrong way. Either that or you're taking the word fucking the wrong way. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=badasshttp://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fucking (look up 2nd one, 1st definition: Something To Add In A Sentence For The Hell Of It) Note: always refer to urbandictionary if you need help with specific non-standard English terms. Just watched the Bisu vs Shine MSL game and the commentators referred to Shine as 傻卡儿 (as in dumb Kal). Phonetically it sounds very similar to Shine[Kal]. Possible new nickname?

I think I generally hear "fake Kal" more than "dumb Kal". But then again the commentators are all Bisu fans, and so are much of the Chinese fanbase. So I wouldn't be surprised if that's used more prevalent these days. I know the whole 90 vs 30 food thing is like a running joke whenever bisu plays.
