Hwaseung Oz released a statement on the 3rd saying that "Manager Cho Jung Woong proposed to the executive office to end his contract in order to have some time to recharge"
While Hwaseung asked Manager Cho to take care of the team until the contract expires, Manager Cho held in his view, and the management accepted his resignation. Han Sang Yeong will be managing the team and rebuilding the team as the team's mood darkened after the news.
i really wonder how much this will affect JD. he's been there for JD since his start, to the average progamer this would definitely have an affect, but JD is probably the resilient progamer there is.
this will definitely affect jaedong. i think manager cho's been there since jaedong started his career. but i hope JD recovers so that he'll give us a good finals

Wtf? He made EVERY GOOD PLAYER Oz ever had
more like got really fucking lucky I'd say.
are you seriously suggesting he was lucky in developing both anytime and jaedong into the influential players they are today?
he managed to take the worst fucking team in the korean scene into a proleague winner. sure, it took a lot of time, but he still did it.
maybe he did a good job "developing" his star players, but the rest of his team is basically pure trash (Hiya a small exception). I still find it really hard to believe how ridiculously good Jaedong, especially considering how bad the rest of his team is.
according to rumors he got fired cause he did a lot of sketchy things and an anonymous letter went into the executive office detailing all the sketchy things he did

CJ's former coach. See, maybe the Chos had a 'suicide pact' of sorts and planned to resign together, but Oz Cho had second thoughts, so CJ Cho had to nudge his friend out.
Honestly I never thought he was a good coach. From interviews I have always had the impression that they were overworked which can lead to a decrease in performance. His player selections have always seemed a bit dubious to me, especially this last season's ace matches. Most of all though is his inability in the last two years to develop someone who can play competently alongside Jaedong. After Jaedong and recently Hiya, they have NO good players. Until recently, Jaedong had been the only player on Oz who had an above 50% winrate.
Now I don't know the ins and outs of the Oz team but sometimes I had the feeling in the last year or so that the coach wasn't working in the best interests of his team with his player selection and such.

Bad bad bad
Well maybe it's because he's the older male figure that's constantly around JD, since he has to live in the team house away from his family? I don't know, it's all just conjecture though.
There is definitely something fishy behind this. He couldn't have left just for recharge just before Jaedong's final. That would have been very irresponsible.

Kind of weird that both Coach Chos are both coaches who took nearly abandoned, destitute teams and turned them into proleague dominant forces and champion factories, and both retire in the same season.

...then again, maybe not.
Cho long.
Seriously though, this is a shame
hahahahahaha i like
also i will miss oz coach cho's hair, and his appearance in future hwaseung houses (who am I kidding will there be any more of those?)
Now us JD fanboys will have an excuse if JD loses!
I wish he had stayed until the OSL run was over, now if he loses there will always be the "if only coach cho didn't leave" thing. I hope he makes private phone calls to JD giving him tips etc. This is sad news

Eh, he sucked as a coach anyways, good for Oz I'd say.
Pusan, Anytime, Jaedong, Hiya, fOrGG
5 all except Hiya and Pusan has a title, but all has left their mark on the scene and both are / were really good.
Probally more, but thats 5 GOOD players on top of my head.
I give zero credit to coach Cho for making Jaedong and Anytime good. A coach will never be able to fully teach someone with the talent of Jaedong and Flash, those players are just too good. Rather, a coach leaves his mark imo by maximizing the potential of those who have lesser skills and by putting them to good use with proper conditioning and strategy in proleague.
The reason why CJ's coach Cho is so revered is because he can take players from the ground and build them into A-class talent.

When Jaedong first joined his team, rumour has it that even his coach was able to defeat him from time to time. He would not have been able to gain such heavy television exposure on some of the other teams so early into his career. All payers need proper grooming to succeed, regardless of their innate talent or work ethic. Just a thought.
I'm not particularly interested in the business of managing a team, but even as a casual viewer of some of the documentaries that covered the inside stories of how these teams operate, I could see that Coach Cho played an immense part in the growth of many of his players under his wing. I don't think it's up to you to judge how much credit he deserves for his players' personal success or how much he failed to progress some of the others that failed to realize their potential without knowing the full story. None of us can.

You're right, i don't know the inner workings, however I do know this: -In the last two seasons Jaedong has been the only reliable player and the only player who has over 50% winrate (until Hiya recently) -Dubious proleague strategies -Innability to develop a protoss lineup after an always injured Backho -Lack of quality draft picks and free agency -Kicked forgg out the door
I don't know if that rumour of yours is true or not, but I do know the things above are correct and this decision was long overdue.

Cho Coach had built up a legacy that shadows some of his shortcomings you listed above.
PLUS used to be the weakest team in the Proleague. Coach Cho and Anytime surprised everyone in the scene when a player that was from a team not even regarded as a proper professional one by some of the people was able to conquer the most prestigious tournament in the scene. He managed to gain sponsorship, provide back-up for his main man Anytime, and eventually made his name as one of the most successful coaches around. Not bad for someone who was in charge of a team that was constantly on the brink of disbanding.
I don't have much interest in the issue, I'm just saying that here's a man who did some pretty remarkable things during his tenure, and perhaps deserves a little respect regardless of the things he did that were not in your taste.

I am pretty sure Jaedong would have never become such a great player in any other team.
The coach and JD have a father-son relationsship, hell JD cried and played horribly during the FA affair.
On September 04 2010 00:05 Holgerius wrote: I am pretty sure JD would've been just as great no matter what team he was in.
Perhaps. If you were talking about Nada, I wouldn't hesitate to answer. Coach Cho saw something in Jaedong that was not apparent at the time, since he wasn't a prodigy of Flash-esque measures, and took special care to make sure that he would get as much television exposure as possible, for one thing. Jaedong flourished under Coach Cho's attentive eye, but I believe it is difficult to say whether he would have done worse, the same, or even better in a different environment.
I could picture a scenario where a team simply disregards the need for yet another zerg player that did not have particularly impressive skills as an amateur player. Or a scenario where the highly skilled pre-exisisting members of a prestigious team curb the growth of a new player that quickly becomes demoralized without the presence of a mentor to guide him.

Maybe, but he sure didn't start out great. Of course, we are in no position to know how much of his development was due to his coach, and how much was due to other factors, but he definitely needed to develop.

You just betrayed the single most loyal gamer who gave 110% effort to you. Nothing has been confirmed mister rumor mill. Might want to calm down for now.
Might wanna learn to read. Notice how I said IF this were true. Putting everything together it seems pretty legit, Why would Oz let go of someone who JD cares alot for if there wasnt something there. Also theres no way Coach Cho "retired" as coach... It's not like hes got other jobs lined up for him paying 100k a year.... /facepalm
Well really IF I read your post, it would've been pretty clear to me that you already decided that IF = guilty. A lot of people retire/move on with their careers 100k a year isn't some unheard of sum of money that no one could ever abandon, especially for people with connections. Coach Cho is fairly old maybe he's just tired of the grind. Maybe he got fired because Oz didn't reach the benchmarks that he said he could take them to. Point is there are a lot of maybes for someone with zero inside knowledge to believe they know all the facts. /facepalm

Well I kind of understand his decision since he's been under a lot of criticism for failing to reach the playoffs in SPL last season. He really needed to stay off the pressure and stuff, yeah. But I still think he should have stayed in his seat until Jaedong finished his season (OSL finals). No doubt that despite being the only reason Oz has more than 5 wins last season, Jaedong feels some sort of fault in this.

He's still going to be there for the finals. At least that's what the op's quote seems to imply.
