Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum..

I just recently started playing SC:BW and my problem is that my widescreen/windows 7 laptop isn't optimized for an old game like Starcraft.

I stumbled upon this video and I see that Starcraft seems to run great in this monitor.

I was wondering if anybody knows what kind of monitor this is or if you can recommend me a perfect monitor for Brood War. Also, does it have to be a CRT? What's the highest resolution can Brood War support?

Starcraft is always 800x600 I believe, so it's 4:3

Set your monitor aspect ratio to 'auto' if you want to stretch your screen

It's 640x480 actually.

I've got a 21" LCD (16:10) and it looks great, it's a bit stretched, but you wouldn't notice it.

Don't know why people are recommending a stretched view. It'll screw up your mouse accuracy. Black bars is way better.

To play with the correct aspect ratio (i.e. black bars instead of a stretched view) both graphic card driver and monitor have to support this.
If one doesn't support it, it won't work.

How do you make it do black bars instead of stretch? Does the game automatically do it if your graphic card driver and monitor both support it?

You have to set up the driver to do this.
SC has nothing to do with it.

So I should just get a widescreen and set up black bars?

1. most ppl aren't good enough to notice a loss of accuracy caused by a changed of raito

2.if you have a fancy mouse you could try to adjust the x and y dpi according to the raito

16:10 ->
640:480->
768:480 uhhh dam thinking hurts haha
just make it 1.6x

So if you put dpi of 5 for your y axis use a dpi of 8 in your x axis

I think you just need a good screen.

I have a Samsung P2350, 23" full HD 16 : 9 and it switches to 640x480 4:3 when i start broodwar.
I don't even have to change my settings, i just have two black bars on each side because of the 4:3 ratio but i think it is great

Samsung screens are really good ( P2350, P2370, 2450, P2470 etc ... )

Yeah quite a few monitors have this option just need to find it in it's settings to auto switch to 4:3 or 5:4

If not usually your video card could do it.

The easiest solution is getting the iCCup launcher and running it in windowed mode.

Uhm, the biggest problem probably lies in you using win7, not your monitor tbh. Win7 makes just about ANYTHING in BW work like crap...

How so? The only difference is that the background will be your desktop, browser or what have you. Once you get used to playing in windowed there shouldn't be any difference in your play.

Units are smaller and you might click on the background, which is the same thing than accidentally alt-tabbing.

Win 7 64 Bit here, LG 23 inch widescreen monitor with 4:3 support - other than load screen colors looking bad because I run 32 bit colors and SC BW is I believe 8 bit, the game runs perfectly - same as it has since I bought it. I have both official BNET version and ICCUP version installed and working. Try running the application as an administrator and in Windows 98 Compatibility Mode.

Edit: Boblion like the guy your replied to said once you get USED TO WINDOWED MODE its the same, obviously someone who is used to full-screen will have problems with clicking the desktop by accident. I raided for 2.5 years in windowed mode and clicking my desktop sporadically isn't a problem for me. So in short is it harder to play in windowed mode? No, its just frustrating if you are not normally playing in that mode.

There's a button that increases the size of the window by a fair amount and you can manually make it the size you want too with a little more effort put in. It also has a button that prevents you from dragging the cursor out of the game window, basically treating it as being run in fullscreen.

People are giving away 15" CRT for free. Imho it's the best option to play BW. Many newer monitors can't display 640*480 properly. Since their maximum resolution is not a multitude of 640*480, they almost always interpolate pixels which makes BW look ugly and is bad for your accuracy.

Downgrading to a 15" just to play BW is an awful price to pay, especially when the running it in a window practically gives the same result.

for anyone with a decent mouse, as in one that is quite sensitive and for people who have quick mouse movements, even the setting to keep the mouse inside the window does not work. my mouse frequently leaves the window as i go to scroll, so i get some movement of the camera, and then my mouse leaves the window.

Are you sure you aren't pressing alt when this happens? I have never ever had trouble with the mouse leaving the window with mouse lock turned on. If you hold alt it is supposed to allow you to move the mouse out of the window.

@OP Because my 24inch widescreen monitor at home is a cheapo TN panel it refuses to display 640x480 in its proper aspect ratio so I have to use windowed mode. I use 2x pixels and mouse lock and have no issues whatsoever. If you are having trouble getting fullscreen to look the way it should I highly recommend windowed mode

I have tried the windowed mode that came with the iCCup Launcher but it's either too small or too big for the laptop monitor.

Try set your desktop resolution to 720x480 or 800x500 and then run windowed mode with x1 pixels. These are widescreen resolutions but the height should closely match 640x480.
