For people saying they've lost all respect for the proscene in general, I suggest reading the interview with Sea from the MBC vs Estro game recently

Seems like the Boxer marriage thing is much bigger than the rigged matches in Korea, at least with the general public. At the moment, the no.1 search on Naver is Kim Ga Yeon (aka Boxer's fiance), and the no.2 search on Naver is Lim Yo Hwan (aka Boxer). Whereas when the match rigging scandal came out, it wasn't on the Naver top 10 search list.

p.s. actually Kim Ga Yeon does not look her age...

It's amazing how much press this story is getting, it's made the front page of slashdot now too. Which is a big news and technology site. It's got a fair few comments too, reading now.

While boxer was a very important player in the history of starcraft, and the development of esports (though not alone, so I don't know why you single him out so), at this point he is not an active part of it. Regardless of the "OMG SCANDAL" thing going on right now (in korea as well as TL), it will blow over. the SPL format change negates the ability to bet on players directly (and instead only on the teams). Any players proven to be cheating (see 'proven', not suspected, like most names in these threads, see: stork, jaedong, fantasy, etc etc etc) will be forced to retire from starcraft (and might face criminal charges), but the game will go on. Teams will not all disband if boxer is found to have been throwing matches several times.

You're looking at this from an internal point of view, and not from the point of view of a spectator.

Suppose you're a casual SC viewer in Korea. You only know, say, 5-6 progamers by name, and follow those few carefully. Now suppose that of those 4 of them were found to be match-rigging, including your favorites. What keeps you watching? You don't play, you don't look for deep strategic insight. All you look for is to follow your favorite players. And now you hear that they've broken the law for a quick buck, and that some of their greatest achievements might have been a fluke?

Now assume that these people make up the majority of viewers in Korea. You can't tell me that ratings/viewership wouldn't decline. Boxer is key not because he's a big player in current Starcraft, but because in the hearts and minds of many people, he is what brought them into Starcraft. That the flagship progamer of the last decade is corrupt would signify that the entire industry is corrupt.

Yes, PR hits do happen, and they do affect viewing, but they will not kill the sport, simply because people also follow teams (not just select players), and the teams are here to stay. Now if/when your favorite player turns out to be in the middle of a scandal, it might bother you, and you're right, some might give up on the sport entirely, but that is generally not the case. Some people write said player off, some stick by them regardless for their other accomplishments, but most will find new favorites to follow.

As for Boxer, if he were theoretically found to be guilty of such a thing, it would indeed tarnish his image (and make e-sports look bad), but it would not take away from his accomplishments, and he would still remain a starcraft icon (much like I expect savior to be if indeed he is guilty and is forced to quit, after everything dies down a bit). I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree here.

Because teams have no regional affiliation, most people pick the team that has their favorite players on it. If your favorite players were all taking bribes, you will care a lot less.

Seems that at this point, Savior is pretty much an absolute certainty as far as corruption goes.

Can someone please explain WHY everyone seems to think Savior was rigging games? I don't see the evidence mentioned anywhere in this thread.

The investigations on him, the fact he was booted off the A-team and demoted from captain in March, the fact that the media has all but said its him without releasing his name because they can't.

I never thought that something like this could happen.
I mean first throwing matches by some of my favorite players and then learning the face that Boxer is actually a MILF hunter :/

CJ Entus, "Plans to strongly respond to malicious accusations about players"

Asks people to restrain themselves from spreading rumors.

CJ Progaming team revealed that they will strongly respond to false accusations about their gamers accused of fixing games.

A CJ affiliate phoned Fomos to let them know about rumors flying around about Savior. They mentioned, "Savior indeed is going through knee surgery. There has been no talk among the team about retiring or displacing Savior."

The affiliate added that the investigation about match fixing is on-going and that no one should jump to conclusions that tarnish the reputation of any of the CJ players before anything is confirmed. "As long as these malicious rumors keep spreading to destroy players' reputations, we will strongly respond to them."

On the other hand, there have been many articles in the e-sports community about who has fixed matches. According to Code 307, these accusations fall under libel and can be punished under law. Even if the accusations are true, by Code 310, accusers can avoid penalties only if additionally, the accusations were made for the greater good.

---

Basically, CJ Entus is standing by its players, at least until proven guilty. Also, we finally seem to get an answer to why suspects in Korea cannot be named -- newspapers do not want to be charged for libel in case the accusations are false or revealing names is not considered helpful to the "greater good".

Korean progamers investments usually consist in fine cars, expensive watches and shiny room salons.

I ponder if this was big enough to actually alter the global live games level, I mean, if they threw off important games, competition must've been altered and different.

All I can say is holy shit

I'm not that surprised though because shit like this is rampant in any sport, comes with being a professional sport, but its still saddening.

I think the most annoying thing about it is how it puts a lot of shit into doubt even it wasn't actually tainted by match-throwing.

Whether that statement is true, partially true, or completely false, you have absolutely no credibility in determining that for us.

And you should take to heart the part about spreading rumors. Rumors don't help anyone.

Just when I thought pro gamers were perfect in terms of legal issues they found a way to break the law despite being locked up in their practice houses virtually all day...

Really shocking and embarrassing for eSports.
