Jaedong: "I am not satisfied with just the Golden Mouse." "I was certain I would win 3:0 if I won the first set."
- What are your thoughts on your win today? ▲ There are only two people who have won three OSLs, and I am proud to have joined them. I can feel all the effort I have put in while being a progamer paying off after winning today. When I was ahead 2:0, I told myself not to be complacent as I looked at the Golden Mouse, reaffirming my desire to win.
- It must not have been easy to prepare for the Grand Finals. ▲ Even as I was on my way here, I felt that I had practiced much less than YellOw[ArnC]. Just as when I was about to focus hard on practicing, I had to go through some troubles regarding the FA, leading me to worry more about issues that wasn't related to my games at all. I didn't practice enough for me to be satisfied, but just yesterday, I practiced hard with my teammates and it was then when I felt that I was sure to win this OSL. That is why I felt that the amount of time I spent practicing didn't really matter.
- Which was your toughest match in this Bacchus OSL, and were you pressured by this Grand Finals? ▲ Now that I think about it, every match was tough. But if I had to choose one, it would be the semifinals (against Fantasy). At that point of time, I was under a lot of pressure, and I was even hearing stuff like "Jaedong is slumping" after the Proleague Grand Finals, which made me swear to win this OSL, and the same goes for the finals itself. I am known to be the best ZvZ player, but my recent performance against Zergs have been shaky, which was why I wanted to win this finals and retain the image of me being the best ZvZ player.
- Have you thought about which team to go regarding the FA? ▲ My manager and my thoughts were the same as we negotiated the contract. I have thought about this from a long time ago, but I started my life as a progamer in Hwaseung, and I've been with my manager ever since I was an amateur. Hence, I want to continue staying at Hwaseung. But we still couldn't come to an agreement. Nothing is final yet.
- You won 3:0. ▲ In my pre-game interview, I said that if luck wasn't on my side, I would win 3:1, else I would win 3:0. The first set was the most important, but luck was on my side and my build gave me the upper hand. I was certain I would win 3:0 if I won the first set.
- What does the Golden Mouse mean to you, and your future goals as a progamer? ▲ When the Golden Mouse is brought up, many people jokingly talk about the gold prices, and I personally really don't think much about it. I just think of it as a bonus prize for winning 3 OSLs. I am just honored to be a recipient of the Golden Mouse, and I want to be the first player to win 4 OSLs by performing the same way I have throughout these years. My ultimate goal is to be a progamer that e-sports fans and my juniors will remember forever, as well as setting new records that can never be surpassed.
- As the best Zerg player, are you satisfied with today's games? ▲ This is something a progamer shouldn't think about, but after winning the first set, I thought about how I should entertain the fans, being the finals and all. So personally I felt that I played an intense series. Also, if there were to be another ZvZ finals, I think that if you (the fans) also think about the mind-games going on, you would be able to enjoy the games much more.
- How do you plan to spend the money you have earned up til now, as well as your future incomes and prizes? ▲ I have won 3 OSLs, but regarding the prize moneys, other than treating those who have helped me, I haven't done much with it. I want to treat my teammates and coaching staff once again for their help this time round, as well as be filial to my parents, and if given a chance, I want to go traveling in September.
- Is it now the era of the Zergs? ▲ Both individual leagues' finals are ZvZs, so one may call it 'The Era of Zergs', but I think it's just a continuously-changing cycle. There are hardly any cases of Zergs defeating other races hands down. It is just that on broadcasted matches, there have been quite a few Zergs who weren't eliminated. Aside from that, I think that luck played a huge factor, and I believe that in the next season, the Terran or Protoss will be able to win.
- After the prize ceremony, what did Coach Cho whisper to you on stage? ▲ He told me, "you are my best player now, and you will forever be."
- Any final words? ▲ I managed to win my third OSL title today, and I've said this many times but I am still not satisfied. I will continue to participate in all the leagues, and until the day I retire from progaming, I will participate in all matches and work hard to put on a great performance for the fans. I look forward to everyone's support, and although this was a tough season for me, I would still like to thank all my fans from the bottom of my heart.

Tx for the translation. :D I wonder what the coach means by those words, because according to different interpretations in the light of the FA thing it can mean the difference between a threat, a plea, expressing hope or just an observation.

I really hope for the coach that JD could have the contract that he wants.
Jaedong is Hwaseung is something that everybody will remember. If Jaedong moves in another team, I guess a lot of people will not the same Jaedong as he was in Hwaseung. As he said "...but I started my life as a progamer in Hwaseung, and I've been with my manager ever since I was an amateur."

If it was someone else who got told that and Jaedong heared it, it would just be a spark to get even better. I'm quite certain that it is no surprise to any of them that Jaedong is the golden boy and tbh he's well deserved of it. However even if that's the case, I seriously doubt that none of the other players gets any love.

For me he's the bonjwa for sure, just this season he reached semis in MSL, carried the team to PL super finals and won Golden mouse with the 2nd OSL gold in a row defying silly curse. Combined with all the JD dominance there was, that's an easy call. He does not just win 1-2 games at a time, like Bisu or Flash, he just excels at everything. I'd love to see his kespa points peak now.
This was a great interview, JD deserved this mouse, and Cho deserves the credit for coaching JD, but it will be kinda sad seeing JD go to another team..ah well. Thanks for translating

JaeDong is like the sAviOr of his coach right now. Considering how much he has done to make the team so much more well known. He is truly the best player Hwaseung will ever have and it will be sad to see him leave if he does.

Haha, you don't need to be reading TeamLiquid to be completely knowledgeable about current trends and tendencies, especially if you're in the middle of it all.

Ah la the ForGG incident where JD didn't win? I can imagine teammates would admire JD's skill, but at the same time hate him for always outshining them. Which would apply to how Coach Cho favors JD over them as well, but Oz and JD are unusually close so it might not matter...

Noooooo. I worship JD but when you lose 0-3 in the most important series of the entire year then no. It doesn't matter how he lost. But I'm thinking specifically for his zvz match.... He could've prevented that ace match and gone to superace right there and then. Everyone at that point had finally contributed so JD could go to ace. I don't know if it would've mattered anyway, since I don't think JD would've been prepared for that 2 rax build in any case. Though, objectively speaking. Maybe a year from now, when he's won more titles and when he's shown an equally dominating season we'll look back and in retrospect praise JD for his run this season. Since he did make it to the semis in one league, carried his team to the PL finals and won his golden mouse with dominance. I mean... That's a pretty decent run right there.

As did everyone else in progaming. Well, I guess they didn't really have the chance because they didn't make it far enough in all of the leagues. Oh wait, that means Jaedong did amazingly well.
truthfully, I feel that Leta wouldn't have had much of a chance either. I mean it's Jaedong for crying out loud (despite all the cries of slump a few days ago).

He's not being arrogant in that at all. It's a well-known fact that he's the best ZvZ'er in the world (two months ago, he boasted an 80% ZvZ) and if he plays to his potential, there should be no reason to drop a game. Furthermore, this was a PRE-GAME interview, and yellow was listening. He has to say stuff like that. It wouldn't make sense to say something along the lines of "I think I will lose 3-0 unless I am lucky because my opponent is better than me."

I'm definitely not saying Jaedong is definitively Bonjwa, but it just strikes me as odd that he's disqualified for doing poorly in proleague (or the grand finals atleast, otherwise he was a beast), whereas that never mattered to other Bonjwas. Savior wasn't that good in proleague, either.
On August 22 2009 23:02 JWD wrote: If I was any one of Jaedong's teammates, I would hate Coach Cho.
I completely disagree. The notion of pecking order is very strong in that culture. Jaedong's juniors on the team know he's better than them. They know it all too well.

Being arrogant is tied closely to being good in something. Not necessary, but a bad player that says these kind of things is not arrogant, is crazy.
It doesnt matter the other player is listening. Try to go to NBA finals or something like and say you are gonna rape your adversary 4-1 if you are unlucky, 4-0 if you are lucky.
Its overconfidence and lack of respect for your adversary, and no prospect of victories back up this kind of behavior.
Actions speak louder than words (ex. Bisu's groups) vs (JD's 2 groups of death). Bisu also berates others, while JD exalts himself. "Hey, I have a great idea, let's go to a player's winning interview thread and call him arrogant, that'll go well"

Yes Savior know very well these talk of "Actions speak louder than words".
Anyway i didnt said anything that is not true. Im happy he won as he has the merit, hes my 3rd favorite player. I just made a note on the interview, thats all. Besides that, he deserved his golden mouse.
Its just funny that many fans of JD bashed bisu for arrogance, and now that JD acts this way, hes right because hes good. I dont aprove any player arrogance.

I agree but I think it's because different eras call for different "qualifiers" to be called a bonjwa. Savior was literally uncontested in his era, he reinvented ZvT singlehandedly, and he dominated, and dominated for a long stretch of time in one of the most unbalanced map pools of all time. Because the difference in skill level is razor thin nowadays, because the skill level is unbelievably high nowadays and because players like Bisu, flash and fantasy exist, JD has more to prove than the other bonjwas.
That's just how I feel though. Someone needs to compile a list of how the other bonjwas did in the OSL/MSL/proleague and see how they compare to one another. I almost forgot about GOM.... So JD carried his team to the grand finals, won the OSL, got to the semi-finals of the MSL AND got to the quarter-finals of GOM, pretty much all at the same time. That's pretty amazing... I wonder how well he'd do if he were on a good team :D.

Yes, this is very true. I followed up on some blogs and sites like Naver and it seems to me that approximately half of the community is calling him bonjwa. The problem is that the other half is arguing against it. Some people argue that Jaedong's done everything to qualify as a bonjwa in terms of success, Starleague runs, numerous longest win streaks, and his ridiculous win-loss ratio. He's ranked #3 in terms of OSL and MSL badges (since Korean netizens all agree that 3 OSL + 1 MSL > 3 MSL + 1 OSL). However, the other half disagrees because they're saying that he doesn't have the force like Ma Jae Yoon (aka sAviOr) had. Another reason is that Jaedong still has rivals like Bisu or Flash even though he surpassed them in terms of success. One things certain though, they all do agree that Jaedong is the most skilled player in this age/era right now. So I guess we just have to wait and see how things will turn out in the end. I consider Jaedong bonjwa but only cause I'm a big fan of his. I'm not stating that it's a fact so don't flame me. (puts on anti-flame suit on) ^_^

Honestly I don't think we have to subordinate ourselves from the Korean community that far. Of course, the fact that we're using their jargon does mean that our fan culture is derivative to a degree, but the many differences in the subtleties of perception in various events show that the foreign community has it's own consciousness to a degree. Even Bonjwa, I've seen people absorb the word through whatever limited information they can get, and now it's taken a life of it's own in the English speaking community.
If everyone in Korea started calling someone Bonjwa, I'm sure we would follow, but I'm just saying we are at least fractionally, a part of a larger community, and constant affirmation from a mother community isn't necessary.

This is mainly the reason why I don't completely agree on Jaedong being bonjwa right now.
and I do somewhat agree to a certain extent with Waxangel, but how teamliquid defines bonjwa just isn't accurate and certain enough (e.g look at all those bonjwa threads)

I don't think Bisu or Jaedong are arrogant. It's called being talented and confident. Having confidence that you can win is an important step in actually winning.

Agreed to an extent...but really only the other progamers make it true.
Savior was a "bonjwa" because all his peers regarded him as such. Until that happens again there is no bonjwa Boxer/Nada/Oov/Savior were bonjwas because there was no doubt in the minds of their peers that they were the best.
Jaedong and Bisu are both very cocky, but it comes off as arrogant from Bisu and just 'confident' from Jaedong.
Like some people have said before, it's all about their image. Bisu just LOOKS like an arrogant prettyboy who thumbs his nose at people, while Jaedong looks like a chill dude. It's an unfair judgement, but what can you do. I like both players a lot for being lighthouses in the dark for their respective races when the other players are doing bad (Jaedong for Zerg a year or so ago, Bisu for Protoss now), though. And Flash for being pretty much the only Terran holding down the fort in the Protoss dragons era. All of them are race heroes who said 'screw the odds' when people said their race was underpowered.

This is kind of sweet, but also kind of creepy. Maybe it just doesn't translate well. Also it's kind of a backhand to the other Oz players to basically say that no matter how hard they try, they'll never be as good as Jaedong. It's probably true, though.
