The Group Selection

Group Selection Discussion Thread

The Steal Draft

The Steal Draft is a somewhat long and complicated process, not helped at all by the large number of players that now qualify for each MSL season. Here’s how it works:

The first eight seeds are placed into groups A through H, with the first seed in Group A and the eighth seed in Group H. The first eight seeds may never be moved by any player, they remain in the groups in which they are seeded. Seeds nine through sixteen are determined by previous MSL appearances and performance, with more obviously being better. Seeds nine through sixteen are placed into the other pair in groups A through H, but in reverse order. Seeds eight and nine would be in the same group, then seven and ten, six and eleven and so on up until the first and sixteenth.

Once players are placed into the groups, the remaining players are also ranked based upon previous MSL appearance and performances. Starting with the seventeenth, and ending with the thirty-second, each player takes his own name and places it in an open spot next to the player he wishes to play against.

After everyone has been placed upon the board, the stealing begins. It starts in ascending order at the sixteenth seed and moves all the way up to the first. Seed nine through sixteen are allowed three options: (1) Exchange himself with another player, (2) Exchange his current opponent with another player, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one.

Seeds three through eight work a little differently. They are able to pick two moves from the following: (1) Exchange a player in their group with another player, (2) Exchange any two other players with each other, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one. Seeds two and one earn a few more decisions. They are able to switch any player with another player and may do so up to three times or until they wish to pass.

Results and Standings for the Round of 32

Once again we return to a group stage for the round of thirty-two. Each group consists of four players; the Steal Draft determines their placement in each group. Each group must go through a double elimination format to determine which players will advance and which players are eliminated. If a player can get two wins before he gets two losses, then he advances to the next round. If he can’t, then he is eliminated. Two players from each group of four will have the chance to continue to fight for this season’s title.

Results and Standings for the Round of 16

The number of remaining competitors has been halved as the tournament continues into the Round of 16. Beginning with this round, the tournament becomes single elimination. The players who finished first out of their groups last round will be paired against a player that finished in second. Each pair of players will play a best-of-three match to determine not only who will advance to the next round, but who will earn seeds into the following MSL.

Thumbs Down
Since there are four maps, there will be one map in each best-of-three match that will not be played. The players who finished first out of their group are given the opportunity to give a “thumbs down” to one of the maps. What this means is that the player will get to choose one of the four maps that he will not have to play on during this round. This allows the player the advantage of getting to remove a map that does not fit his play style or that he thinks may be imbalanced in a particular match-up.

Results and Standings for the Quarterfinals

It is showtime. The competition heats up as the number of players are reduced again and the number of games per match increase. All of the advancing players will be meeting up with the other person that qualified from their Round of 32 Group, while the other four groups didn;t quite cut it. Each match is now a best-of-five, a more challenging series as each player has already secured a seed for the next MSL, their only goal now should be championship. When the dust clears after this round, we can only hope there will still be a player to stand against Protoss, if only for the interest of not feeling like being trapped in a house of mirrors.

Thumbs Down
As we transition to the the quarter finals, with the format changing into a best-of-five series with two equally ranked players, the Thumbs Down system also changes. Both players will pick a map that they do not want to be repeated in the five map set. (As there are four maps in the tournament, one is repeated for a best-of-five match.)

(P)Bisu 3-0 ► Advances to the Semifinals
(T)firebathero 0-3 ► Eliminated

Results and Standings for the Semifinals

There are only four players left. Thumbing down works the same for this round as it did last round. Each will be eager to prove they are worthy of a championship and only have one matchup to practice until then. Unfortunately that means three best of five mirror matches for us. A Protoss will be taking home the trophy this season. Which one will prove himself to be the newest of Protoss kings?

(P)Bisu 3-1 ► Advances to the Grand Finals
(P)free 1-3 ► Eliminated

Results and Standings for the Grand Finals

It is down to the final two Protoss players. Like the OSL Finals just a few weeks ago, the Samsung-SK Telecom rivalry is at stake. Will Jangbi be able to hoist the crown as his teammate Stork has or will Bisu earn his third finals victory and avenge his own teammate Fantasy?

Game 1: (P)Bisu < (P)JangBi on Athena 2
Game 2: (P)Bisu > (P)JangBi on Destination
Game 3: (P)Bisu > (P)JangBi on Byzantium 2
Game 4: (P)Bisu > (P)JangBi on Medusa
Game 5: (P)Bisu vs (P)JangBi on Athena 2

Easily the second best name. I hated all the food sponsors like Baskin Robbins and Pringles. Everytime I watched, I craved food.

Who cares.

I'm a savior fan, but damn even I wished for him to lose in the last game. What's the point if he's gonna play like this next round? Better to get got early than go on dragging this sham out.

BTW how's it going semiold, I'm back from a long break. .dragoon is back yo!

Flash already out. Wtf?

Flash really has a problem with the twins monsters.

This is going to be an awesome MSL. Most if not all of those matchups look promising, except Frozean and Nada, and probably Jaedong vs Free cause Jaedong is going to rape him, but that's still fun to watch.

looking forward to fOrGG vs. Stork and another epic Bisu vs. Hwasin MSL series! Kal/Iris could be good if both players show up in good form.

especially rooting for type-b and NaDa. Wouldn't mind seeing Bisu meet and destroy fbh in the Ro8.

it's been that way for a few MSL's at least. Always seemed illogical and bad for match diversity imo, but whatever, that's just the way it is.

It doesn't reduce the chance at all since both Yarnc and type-b would be outsiders to beat the majority of the competition.

Why is Bisu emo? People call Bisu and JD emo, for what seems like no reason.

Hmm, after FBH beats Tempest 2-0, I'm sure Bisu is next, then probably Free then Stork, wow. Haha. FBH Kill Toss for title.

I think the semis will be Stork vs Jangbi and Bisu vs NaDa. A final of NaDa over Stork would be awesome.

I have this nagging feeling in my gut that we're going to have an all protoss Ro4. At best I see one of firebathero/NaDa managing to win. Yarnc stands no chance. With a 1-5 career record against JangBi he'd stand a better chance at making it with every one of the wonder girls than defeating JangBi.

True... I really hope it won't happen.

Consider the records of Jangbi and free versus the records of Nada and Yarnc lately, it is really looking like at least 3 protoss will be in the semis.

Only tossup is fbh versus bisu, although fbh's record vs protoss is terrible he has done well recently. On the other hand, Bisu's record vs T is also bad and he has lost to fbh recently. Because it's a series though, I think Bisu can pull it out.

MSL needs to stop copying TSL

We have Free upsetting ZvP master Jaedong in Ro16, and the Semi finals look like they might be a PvP and a PvT.

I don't know if bisu can man-handle fbh. I think fbh's tvp went up a notch and a half recently.

lol funny how, if FBH wins this MSL he will also probably have done it vs pure protosses;) since i think free will > nada
According to Reach, he is the fastest learner he has ever seen. He start bw only like 2/3 years ago. Infact, his bw history knowledge is so limited, he didn't even know what the map Guillotine was.

any1 on right side taking it is fine with me especially Free

Predicting
Bisu > FBH - He has changed his TvP quite a bit, but Bisu is playing hot.
Free > NaDa - Sorry NaDa. Free is playing pretty well too.

Kal > Jangbi again. Even though Stork was busy preparing for OSL, Kal still beat him.

Free > Bisu- Not too familiar with Free's PvP but I know he can be explosive at times.

Free > Kal- I predicted Free winning Arena MSL and am doing the same for this one.

it kind of sucks if nada wins and bisu will have to practise PvT to semis, when Kal/Jangbi can start practising PvP already before semis.

No I didn't mean I don't want nada to win but I wan't Bisu to get MSL title again

I'd say Bisu would beat Free in a Bo5. PvP is Free's worst match-up and hasn't played it well lately. Bisu on the other hand played a lot of PvP. He was pretty even against Stork and beat Much, Kal and Backho recently.

Interestingly enough he lost his last three Proleage games against Free. But then Bisu hasn't been great in Proleague in a pretty long time.

Bisu will beat Free or Nada. No questions asked.
Dear BW Gods, I know it's not autumn (in the Northern hemisphere), but please have mercy on Protoss.

so it's Kal vs Jangbi and Free vs Bisu?
Those 4 are all so good at pvp that it's impossible to tell the outcome, but I've always liked Jangbi so I hope he can get himself a title.

Combined record of all Protoss games in this MSL (minus mirrors): 26 wins - 10 losses

Half of the Protoss players that were in this MSL earned Seeds to the next MSL

Once past the group Stage, only one Protoss player lost a match to a non-Protoss player. There were nine of these matches total.

Jaedong was the only Zerg player to win even a single game against ANY Protoss player.

I think the hidden bracket should be the title bracket and vice-versa...

There are spoilers in the title bracket but there are none in the spoiler (hidden) bracket.
