One thing I find interesting is how an appreciation for math and science can so be so seamlessly incorporated into a discussion about almost anything. Sometimes hijacking a discussion and turning it into a math problem will annoy the other participants, depending on the circumstances. However, I think it's good to have a true appreciation for the value of this. Take a look at this example of a car conversation I just had on irc:

[17:45] <micronesia> I don't even know what that is haha
[17:45] <DhakhaR> really?
[17:45] <micronesia> With its 16-cylinder four-wheel drive, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 may well be the most sophisticated production vehicle of all times.
[17:45] <micronesia> wow
[17:45] <DhakhaR> fastest road car ever
[17:45] <micronesia> how much is that
[17:45] <DhakhaR> erm... infinte
[17:46] <DhakhaR> you have to be selected to buy one
[17:46] <DhakhaR> its like 1000bhp
[17:46] * lofwyr is now known as LOFWYR
[17:46] <DhakhaR> 400kph
[17:46] <micronesia> all the units on that site
[17:46] <micronesia> are metric
[17:46] <micronesia> dammit
[17:47] <micronesia> brb
[17:47] <DhakhaR> kk
[17:47] <micronesia> back, so yeah
[17:48] <micronesia> I don't know that much about cars over say
[17:48] <micronesia> 100k haha
[17:48] <micronesia> (us dollar)
[17:48] <micronesia> although the way things are going I won't be able to get a yaris for that much soon
[17:49] <DhakhaR> lol
[17:49] <DhakhaR> at least your fuel is cheap
[17:49] <DhakhaR> although you have further to go i guess
[17:49] <micronesia> our fuel isn't as cheap as it used to be but
[17:49] <micronesia> it's recently gone back down partly
[17:49] <micronesia> The mighty, 1,001-horsepower sixteen-cylinder four-wheel drive can be felt and driven through a wide spectrum of revolutions per minute. Constant 250 km/h require only 270-280 of the Veyron’s horsepower. More than 700 HP are continuously “on standby” for quick and fast interludes
[17:49] <micronesia> jeez
[17:49] <micronesia> they probably like
[17:50] <micronesia> reworked that thing for a while
[17:50] <micronesia> to add a few hp
[17:50] <micronesia> to get over 1000 hahaha
[17:50] <DhakhaR> yeah, i read alot about it when it came out
[17:50] <micronesia> how long ago
[17:50] <DhakhaR> hmm
[17:50] <micronesia> imagine parking that thing in a shopping center haha
[17:50] <DhakhaR> maybe 2 years max
[17:50] <micronesia> what does a 7 speed transmission even look like
[17:50] <DhakhaR> in an attempt to raise the top speed they redesigned the wing mirrors
[17:50] <micronesia> the shifter, that is
[17:51] <DhakhaR> but then found that the larger shape was holding the car on the ground aerodynamically
[17:51] <micronesia> ah
[17:51] <micronesia> downforce from mirrors eh
[17:51] <micronesia> that's interesting
[17:52] <DhakhaR> at top speed it covers the length of a soccer field in less than a second
[17:52] <micronesia> what is its top speed
[17:52] <DhakhaR> 408kmph
[17:52] <micronesia> 255 mph
[17:52] <micronesia> sick
[17:52] <DhakhaR> yeah
[17:52] <micronesia> how long is a soccer field
[17:52] <DhakhaR> it will out accellerate a formula 1 car
[17:52] <DhakhaR> idk exactly
[17:52] <micronesia> let me look it up
[17:52] <DhakhaR> wikipedia?
[17:53] <DhakhaR> my GF is making a cake and it smells GOOD
[17:53] <micronesia> The official soccer field size for adults can range from 50 to 100 yards wide by 100 to 130 yards long.
[17:53] <micronesia> let's say 100 yards
[17:53] <DhakhaR> k
[17:54] <micronesia> .0568 miles
[17:54] <micronesia> at 255 mph
[17:54] <micronesia> .8 seconds

[17:54] <micronesia> :D
[17:54] <DhakhaR> this maths problem is more fun
[17:55] <DhakhaR> so crazy

I stuck to an elementary example, so some will make the claim that it was trivial, but I think being able to effortlessly do unit conversions and plug the numbers into 'calculator' on your computer is an undervalued skill.

If I chose a less elementary example, some readers would certainly have found this to be a case where making the situation into a math problem is dumb/etc.

BTW next thinking physics soon.

I think it's more physics/economics that has this kind of "real life application".

Pure maths is too abstract unless you hang around with people who's lives revolve around transformations in the complex plane or something.

Although my dad does slip random bits of maths into everyday life.
"I said hand me the mug, not the salt shaker!"
"Well they are topologically the same."

:D

Since I hang out with a lot of physics/math students, I see this kind of thing happens constantly, and I gotta say I find it rather annoying sometimes. Sometimes it gets tiring having every little detail examined sooooo carefully.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

Yes this was my point. If you take it too far, it's bad. But like, this was a case where I don't think it was bad.

This is extremely trivial, but I bet most people out there would be clueless. Its quite sad.

Basic math like that is really important- the ability to make guestimations and otherwise see what makes sense lets you perform back of the hand analysis on lots of problems.

Yeah I do this all the time. Like if somebody says that it's really hard to move something, I'm like, "Yeah yo, mad coefficient of friction on that shit".

Today, I was standing on this platform with a friend and we were fooling around. I nudged her and she almost fell over off the platform, so she turned around and pushed against me but ended up falling off as a result. She was a bit annoyed but I was just bragging like "damn, did you just see that normal force? Totally projectile motioned you with that." She just looked at me exasperated, LOL.

Yeah, I rock it gangsta physics like that.

I'm using group theory when cleaning tomatoes. Really.
+ Show Spoiler [group theory applied to tomatoes] +
The fact that the rotation group of a tomato, SO(3), is a non-abelian group allows you to rotate the tomatoes by only rolling them around a bit in circles, and even though they will roll back to the original place, they will now have a different orientation, and you can clean that side as well, if you keep it under water.

And making meatballs:
+ Show Spoiler [group theory applied to meatballs] +
Same goes for meatballs. When you fry them, you dont need to actually lift them up to turn them. Just make sure to not shake the pan straight back and forth, but in a circlular motion, and the meatballs will turn a different side up, even though every meatball will stay in the same place as they originally were. Also, make sure that they do not slide, but roll, in the pan.

EDIT: I get a lot of girls.

antrax didn't they get pi wrong in the first video lol

edit: is that before they had better algorithms for determining decimals of pi?

Excellent read, it really resonates with my frustration with mathematics (and my subsequent love affair with it~).

Be careful guys. Someone who has been brought up in the modern world of math education, and takes great pride in their math background and apparent 'open-mindedness' will most likely become very angry as they read it, will constantly accuse the author of various things, and then claim that they cannot bring thyself to finish it.
