Hello TL,
I am a web designer / 2v2 enthusiast playing about 50% protoss and 50% zerg. Let me kick a few facts:

1. Events like Teamspeak open are awesome because they allow anyone to sign up for play in a competitive environment, and give people a goal to fight for other than stealing nerds' ladder points.

2. 2v2s are awesome, because your work together with your friend, and teams are fun to be on.

3. Events like Teamspeak open don't exist for 2v2s (at least are few & far between).

These facts lead me to the logical conclusion that there ought to be a web designer / 2v2 enthusiast that sets up a (hopefully) semi-regular 2v2 tournament that functions along the lines of Teamspeak.

This is my idea for www.2v2sAreFun.com

Obviously, I am not sponsored and not independently wealthy, so I can't offer any of my own prize pool, but I could set up one of the two following options:

A. Something along the lines of an online poker tournament: You pay something like a $5 entrance fee using paypal at 2v2sAreFun.com, and the entire pool is dolled out according to a payout similar to an online poker tournament. This has the advantage of something to fight for, and in my opinion much more interesting. It has the disadvantage of requiring you to trust me.

B. A free tournament, with no prize other than honor points. Lamer in my mind, but doesn't require you to have faith in humanity.

So, obviously, this would require a considerable amount of work on my part, so before I buy the domain and set up the website, I want to know if there's interest in either of these. So, without further ado, the poll:

Poll: Would you be interested in either of these?

Yes, but only the free one. (12)

67%

Yes, I would do the $5 one (6)

33%

18 total votes

Your vote: Would you be interested in either of these?

(Vote): Yes, I would do the $5 one
(Vote): Yes, but only the free one.

(There's no option for "I'm not interested," because I only care about people who are interested.)

Cheers,
SlimeBagly.637

Also, question for mods: I wasn't sure, so I put this in blogs. Should it go in sc2 general?

Sounds interesting. I play some 2v2s pretty often with a friend (actually more than I ladder 1v1, unfortunately) and I do think that 2v2 is a viable format for competitive play. Unfortunately, since 2v2 is rarely explored at the competitive level, there's very little information on how well balanced the game is for 2v2, especially with such a limited set of map styles. I think there's a lot of experimentation necessary for 2v2 to become anywhere close to where v is right now :/

Yeah, but on a small scale it is still a lot of fun. Obviously 2v2sAreFun tournaments would not be held to the standard of TSL, just something to get amped about.

Prodigy team starleague 2v2
EG Masters cup, has the 2v2 element for extra points

Both of these have pro players competing in them. Of course 2v2 is not as well explored as in 1v1 because there is so much more to it with the different race combinations and racial abilities.

Having said that i think another 2v2 tournament can only be a good thing. Just out of interest, what server would this be on and im assuming this would be an online tournament that you are live streaming, perhaps with a delay for the stream to prevent cheating?

Well, I'm NA, but once I set up the infrastructure for the website, it could work on any server. If there was enough interest, I'd love start streaming, but for starters I'm thinking more for the competitors' standpoint than spectators.

Also, (again, assuming enough interest), I want to keep records of and league standings based on tournaments, and have a periodic Winner's bracket.

I would start with the free tournament, and then once you build up a base and players know you are serious about running a tournament, the chip in for a prize pool option would be much more likely to get off the ground.

Makes sense. I guess my user name also doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence. Kind of reminds me of when I went to school at Pomona and they tried to sell me tickets at the dining hall for "SCAMfest." I was really disappointed when I found out that it's a real thing.

I couldn't go to SCAMfest 2008 because they held it at the same time as CONCON so I decided to go there instead.

It was kind of a ripoff.

As a huge fan of 2v2, I was disappointed with the lack of a "Both!" option in the poll :D

Honestly I've felt the urge to do the same thing as far as setting up 2v2 tournaments in the poker style, or even combining both tournament styles and giving players who do pay in to the pot a buy or 1 game advantage over those who don't in the first round. Not that I really like the concept of giving advantages to the financially better-off, but it does create an interesting twist for teams that think they're good enough to overcome the disadvantage and not to buy in, as well as offering an opportunity for those teams that don't feel confident enough to risk money.

I really hope your project gets off the ground!

Sorry to continue this off topic discussion... There are far larger problems than just the fact that the number of regularly occurring competitive 2v2 situations - on every server combined - can be counted on one hand.

I think more important is the fact that there's maybe 1-2% of community forum involvement as far a strategy goes when compared to 1v1, and that small percent is almost entirely wild theorycrafting with no replays or development beyond the initial view of the build discussed. This isn't helped that every potentially legitimate 2v2 thread is flooded with '2v2 is broken and imbalanced and can never be taken seriously' posts that don't help at all. Beyond that, the basic tools that inspire a lot of 1v1developments haven't really been optimized for 2v2 (YABOT, sc2gears, build order generators, etc). So there's practically no communication and no tools on a field that, as you pointed out, is far than 1v1 simply because of race combinations.

Let's not even get into the fact that the best ranked 2v2 teams in the world have consistently been taken down by random arrangements of 1v1 pros simply because their mechanics and general game sense are so much better... just another place where the 2v2 community in general is lacking ;_;

When i was talking about the PTSL and EG masters it was because of something the guy i quoted said, so no exactly off topic. "Unfortunately, since 2v2 is rarely explored at the competitive level"

You also managed to ignore my second statement directed at the OP:
"Having said that i think another 2v2 tournament can only be a good thing. Just out of interest, what server would this be on and im assuming this would be an online tournament that you are live streaming, perhaps with a delay for the stream to prevent cheating?"

As for your statement about every 2v2 thread being filled with "2v2 is broken" and there is no strategy discussed and no replays, i'd like to direct you, and anyone else who loves 2v2, to this thread: TL 2v2 Thread

Also i completely agree with this post:

You could also get a caster like IrieStarcraft involved to cast the games if you didn't want to yourself, he does alot of 2v2 commentaries, not the best but it's the only 2v2 commentator i've managed to find thats any good

Perhaps this would be a good post to link in the thread Ninja offered? I bet a low-risk 2v2 tournament would be popular once it exists. How much work would the process require?
