Hey guys,
I've been traveling Europe for about two months now, and I'm going to Oslo tomorrow. I don't really have a place to stay: hostels are pretty booked (or expensive), hotels equally expensive, and I'm prolly going to be camping outside or something (will have to get a tent first). If anyone is interested in housing a homeless Canadian wanderer, let me know (PM please).
If you want to know more about my travels, thelittleteddy.blogspot.com is a good starting point.
Cheers,
Michael

There's a rather cheap hostel (Sentrum Pensjonat) in a street called "Tollbugata" about 300 m from the railway station. Just try your luck there, they've got a lot of rooms.

isnt there a list on tl where every body lives? lemme search some for you
|
Maybe you can stay with Liquid`Drone.
|
I will have the pleasure of staying with the mighty Eriador, but he don' live in Oslo.
Thanks d1v, I'll check it out.
Please, wo0py, if you would

good luck lol if you decide to camp outside then you have to watch out for romanians, homeless people have complained about romanians robbing them. :D if you're tenting then prolly best to do it somewhere around nordmarka or at least in the western part of town, otherwise you'll risk being waken up by junkies or whatever, oslo is pretty ridiculous narcotics wise.

Why would anyone rob a homeless person!?!?
|
o shiet. I was planning to trip quite far out of town and set up there. Apparently you can camp anywhere that isn't farm/private property and like ~10km out of Oslo there are quite a few free places where it's even nice to camp. Is this true?

homeless people have small amounts of money they gather and they have their stuff too, so they can get robbed. I on the other hand have a laptop, camera, cash and clothes, so I'm absolutely FUCKED.

if you camp a good distance outside oslo I would expect it to be safe, and yea you should be allowed to camp basically anywhere not fenced in / obviously someones garden, but I don't think parks there will be safe. (unlike any other norwegian city unfortunately. I'd happily camp in a park in trondheim ;p )

Eri, if I don't make it the day I'm supposed to, please email my mother.

Yeah there are alot of shady places in Oslo, you definately want to avoid the city itself, and camp outside of it. As a rule of thumb, stay west and avoid anything that looks Romanian.

Romanians stealing their irony?

Unfortunately I live a bit far away from Oslo, but glhf to you! Regarding the Remanians robbing people, never heard about it, but I'm not very updated on that stuff. :p Oslo is a crappy town anyway, so it's probably true.
|
oxygen, gypsies are crafty people. they have their herds of children going around and before you know it, you'll feel a bunch of little hands in all your pockets. Your best bet when you're just walking around is to completely avoid them. Don't stop walking and tell them you don't have money, just completely ignore them and go on your merry way.
I forgot that you're planning on sleeping outside, I think that's the worst thing you can do. I don't see how you won't get your stuff stolen.
|
I would avoid the whole city if I were you. Probably the worst norway has to offer.
|
The more I hear about Oslo, the more I hear it sucks. Should have done more research before booking tickets but never really had adequate time. Could anyone recommend somewhere to go near Oslo where I could camp for several days, safely? (max ~200km) What about Bergen? I'm going to Bergen the 20th, though, and from there I'll be pretty safe. Just need a way to survive these 9 days, and I'm not so cheap that I won't get a hotel or hostel for a few days.

Well, when I was in Norway, Oslo was by far the most disappointing thing of the whole journey. Sry Norwegian guys but your capital blows compared to Copenhagen and Stockholm
|
In your face Norway!
Are you coming to Sweden?
|
No it's true, Oslo is the asshole of norway. Just look at the map damnit you can clearly see the legs.
|
In oslo look up a bar named lille laila ~little laila. I've heard it is pretty awsome.
|
|
I am in Sweden Currently in Stockholm, spent a total of about 4 weeks here. Loved it.

ROFL! No seriously, Oslo was like the anti-climax of my Scandinavia tour. Copenhagen was awesome, Göteborg was cool, Stockholm was impressive. Oslo was just ugly, rainy..

I suggest learning to navigate the metro and discovering "Østmarka Forest" and "Nordmarka Forest". Both places have many different nice locations for outdoor activities/fishing/living outside and are close to Oslo.
Oslo has many opportunities, pm me if you want something translated from "Pulse Oslo", but please state date and preferred category (music, art, film, dance, whatever).
Edit: some maps to get an idea: Maps Oslo Forest Oslo, more maps
No idea why the page has no English version, there are enough people in Norway that are better in English than Norwegian to warrant it alone :|

oslo vandrerhjem haraldsheim (yes their site stinks, but the place is great) -> This is a youth hostel, i stayed here for 5 months in a row. 245,- kr a night, including breakfast (frokost), and man, this IS some breakfast.
You can eat as much as you want, bread, sweety stuff, salty stuff, fish, etc. I basically ate a ton every morning and was almost set for the day.
It does help to eat a lot since Oslo is on some sort of a hill, you always "climb" when you walk.
Also, if you go to Karl Johan's Gate (the main street leading to the King's palace), please, please check the pavement, especially around the fountain (stortinget place), for I did put down almost 30 % of them with my hands, sweat and a hammer.
MAN i am so nostalgic right now, please enjoy this fantastic place, the so kind people that live in, and so amazingly hot girls with the shortest clothes i've been to see...
<3 Oslo

Thanks a lot for the links, humblegar, they'll definitely come in handy.
Currently looking at this: http://www.camping.no/ncg09.pdf - but can't find any actual maps with camping sites.
Thoughts?

Oslo blows, I hate that city and I never go there unless I have something specific to do there. If I where you I would just move along to Bergen as fast as possible
Also you should come all the way north to Tromsø when you are here, best city in the country!
|
I'd love to come to Tromso, but don't have anyone to house me there. Are you willing? And wish I could come to Bergen asap, but I don't want to pay for another flight since I already have one.

all norwegians outside oslo agree with this and norwegians from oslo somehow think that because their city sucks it has charm
should make bergen or trondheim capital.

and tromsø is really nice, would prolly be the place in norway I would live if not in trondheim. =]
|
Sweet! Surprisingly, someone offered me a place to stay. I'll keep the person unnamed unless they don't mind, but I'm very thankful.
Can't wait to get to Trondheim though, and I think it's inevitable to go to Tromso. Norway has always appealed to me, should have done more research, but should be fun either way.

If I was gonna visit norway, I'd check out the nature and shit, like taking a hike up a mountain or something idk, I was in a place called "setesdal" a few days ago and its fucking beautiful..when I grow old, im gonna retire up there, with a bag of weed and just chill for 20 years.

Oslo is the shit stain on the otherwise beautiful fabric of Norway. Sorry you have to go there, but look on the bright side: You'll be leaving again. Hopefully you won't think of it as the representative of Norway while you're there, either.
If I wrote the tourist guide, Oslo would be under the "Escape From New York Re-Enactment" chapter.

Well these people mostly aren't registered in this country, and thus get no welfare. As from my understanding anyway.
Edit: that is, they can register, but they choose not to. ( Or somebody correct me on this? )

Why Oslo blows:
1. It's architecture is ugly. A lot of concrete buildings from the 60ties and 70ties.
2. It's rainy.
3. It's expensive as hell.
4. It's got a lot of beggars and drug dealers.
5. There are very few interesting museums.
6. The people seem to be frustrated (how unexpected -.-)
7. Public transport is complicated, especially because there are a lot of construction sites and stuff.
|
Fortunately, I should be making it out of Oslo well enough. The unnamed member of TL hooked up me up amazingly. Getting a tent and going to Kongsberg until the 19th, then going to hostel it and gtfo to Bergen
Thanks for the advice and help, everyone. Oslo isn't that bad - it reminds me of Montreal - but it seems the real attraction in Norway is the nature and peace, not another trashy city.
