Please note programming, not pro-gaming.
So I've been wanting to start a coding project. Something to learn from and develop my coding and project management skill set. Lately I've started picking up c++ and would like to continue this in a windows environment. So this is where I'm having trouble..
I can't think of anything to program. Completely blank, think writers block but for amateur coders. To elaborate, most the ideas I have feel like I'd be reinventing the wheel(and a inferior wheel at that..lol).
So if anyone has some ideas for a small windows program let's hear'm!

I mean you gotta be utterly boring to not having ideas lol... Here's something... http://www.addictinggames.com/bowman2.html Make online version of that, where people ride griffins and shoot each other with bows. How badass would that be!!!
Or even single player with asdw for one player, up/down/left/right arrow for another player

How about a small application that calculates the size of the area of your penis when you enter height and width
That would be immensely useful

That would be immensely useful that doens't make sense doesn't it? U implying he's in 2D? Now given diameter and length u can do surface area of a cylinder, now that's more fun

oh yeah I just remembered why I failed basic math like 5 times

Try to make your own customized task manager with more features... You can do that pretty easily in C++ with hooks I think.

Write StarCraft 2 please. You just might finish it before Blizzard.

Create a game where you have a human body and assortment of tools and weapons that you can use to dismember it.

i have a feeling to be motivated enough to actually start and finish a programming project, you're going to need to come up with the idea yourself. this is what i find, because it adds an extra proudness factor. what is your level of skill right now? you can always try basic networking programs like IRC

It really depends on your knowledge about programming, like the poster above said. Creating multiplayer games with graphics like someone suggested is quite hard and waaaaaay out of reach for most people.
I'd suggest some very basic race type game, with ASCII graphics. Then you can add more features like weapons and traps and obstacles and whatnot. I found it quite fun.

I recommend Project Euler. http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems
I'm bored this summer and decides to learn more about C++.. and i've been working on this project for 1 month now. It's really fun.. ppl discuss their ways to solve the problems too.

Program something for StarCraft use. It can be as simple (?) as a well featured replay renaming tool. BWChart's one is okay, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Although unfortunately BWProgrammers went 'down' ish so I don't know if you could get adequate help on how to read replay files.

+1 To Project Euler
Its great fun, and you will learn a lot in the process of solving those problems.
The way other people solve their problems is great, some solutions are simply genius

This is just my two cents, but, I don't see the problem in doing what others have already done. Granted, it won't be groundbreaking, but you said you just want to improve your skill. So take things that others have done and do them, like how art students will imitate the masters or how novelists study the story structure of writers from hundreds and thousands of years ago. You're not re-inventing the wheel, just perfecting your ability to make it.

damn, project euler, it's been awhile...

Make a program that combs the internet and all the data on your computer and puts it through a neural net with fuzzy logic, then outputs what program you should "make".
|
Do you do anything besides programming? Program something that would make that job easier.
