So, another music blog from me. As someone may have noticed, my musical taste has a pretty big range; I like everything from Jewel to the most obscure black metal.

Anyways, my last blog was about Stratovarius and Timo Kotipelto and in this blog I will post my top 3 black metal music videos/songs. Norways biggest music export deserves a blog of it's own.

I'm not sure exactly what I like about black metal, but even the most minimalistic black metal has some sort of artsy, grim, aesthetic feel to it. Hence the term "black metal art". The black metal feeling is elusive and hard to define but anyone who knows what I'm talking about will agree. Norwegian bands like Satyricon, Immortal, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth have this black metal feeling. The music is often chaotic, like a whirlwind, yet controlled with cold precision. There's also this nationalistic atmosphere that captures the scandinavian geography with its majestic nature; forests, lakes, fjords and mountains.

Oh, and please don't spam up this blog with youtube videos.

Ragnarok - Blackdoor miracle

Satyricon - Mother North

Gorgoroth - Carving a giant

Black metal.

However they started incorporating symphonic arrangements into their music early on and later on industrial influences, which makes them not so "true" in some peoples eyes.

Good picks, but I can't fathom why you would leave Taake out? Even after listening more than 2000 times to it, "Nattestid I" still gives me the chills (hence my signature).

Taake are awesome. So are Tsjuder, and 1349 and...yeah I forgot some names but there's so many good bands.

But it's a top 3

Isn´t Fenris the guy who listens to techno and 70´s Hard rock?
Why would he have a problem with that?

E. John Coltrane you are now my comrade.

Lol there was a youtube video :D SORRY!

But I have to say that Satyricon video Mother North is pretty much the most retarded video ever IMHO.

They do have some good songs still.

Also which Gorgoroth is that?
I have to say that I don´t like that blood, fire, animal heads stuff that much, it´s like: Mayhem did it years and years ago and some other people before them. I see that stuff nowadays just as a way to reach angsty teens just like Dimmu Borgir and COF. Isn´t that like selling out / not being tr00 in these made up black metal groups who know "the real meaning" of this whole phenomenon. Well I don´t know / don´t care.

Might as well list my top 3:

#3 Limbonic Art

#2 Illnath

#1 AxAmentA

I listen to a lot of symphonic BM that have the 'astral' feel. Arcturus (Who is somewhat Avant-Garde also), Sternenstaub, Kataxu, etc.

wow, again you post 3 shit bands.
Limbonic Art is only good for one album.
Illnath is just old Cradle of Filth.
Axamenta is shit.

Arcturus is beginners Avant-Garde btw, and not too great either.

I really cannot get past Keep of Kalessin and Emperor for black metal... :\

BTW...

Dimmu Borgir is symphonic black metal. They aren't black metal, and they sure as hell aren't death metal...they are neither of those two by a long shot, and I'd partner them closer to the likes of Cradle than other symphonic black bands.

Axamenta is not a respectable black metal band in any way shape or form. They're not a bad band, but...black meta? no.

Black metal has some great bands in it, but the vaaaast majority of it is complete and utter garbage.

I don't like the production value for 'kvlt' BM. Limbonic Art is definitely not mediocre, but each their own

In the BM realm I mostly only listen to Symphonic BM like Tvangeste, Anthelion, Black Countess, etc. As I said prior I don't like the production value for kvlt BM. I'm also a Pianist/Keyboardist so you can see why I prefer Symphonic BM.

Isn´t all kinds of music like that. And what do you mean by a respectable black metal band?
Ha, I guess one can meet some strange people in the interwebs.

Emperor is OK i liked most the last record which was like Ihsahns solo project... Ihsahn has made more interesting stuff afterwards IMO.

Kalessins Reclaim is the only record that Attilas vocals suit quite nicely, although their later production isn´t bad either.

Maybe you should try Immortals - At the heart of winter. I think it´s the best BM record ever and it´s the same style as KoK and Emperor with fast epic riffs and tight playing.

Actually, Immortal is pretty chill. I don't have any of their albums right now, and wouldn't call myself a listener of the band, however. I'll add it on my looong list of shit to get, though.

But you're right...there really is no genre that isn't like that, but I guess I'm more forgiving when it comes to other genres because they spend more than a Benjamin and two hours on producing and mixing their recordings. That is the main reason why I can't stand a lot of black metal...so much of their production is utter crap...

I loved Emperor...their last album as a band is my favorite. Ihsahn's solo stuff is good too, but I miss Emperor...):

Hells yeah!

"At the heart of winter" is sick. That album has atmosphere. I also forgot about Emperor completely and I like them alot.

I think all these genre classifications are ridiculous; Dimmu Borgir was and is a norwegian black metal band, although with alot of different influences nowadays. Yeah they're not as true as Burzum, but they still play black metal, albeit a symphonic version.

Yeah I think that Immortals masterpiece is AtHoW and then Damned In Black isn´t as good as Sons of Northern Darkness but those are the top3 records. They have the right ratio of studio/producing work yet not too clean and soft like one could say about alot of modern BM.

Man this is starting to be pretty good conversation, are you guys musicians or something? :D
Or just music enthusiasts?
I love playing some KoK and Immortal, that really gets your hand all fucked up... like Demonaz´s

E. Oh yeah. All Shall Fall is going to be super epic destruction of the known universe, I guess it comes out in September.

Yeah AtHoW/Sons of northern darkness (damn good album too) as number 1 and the rest of Immortal, like "Damned in black" as number 2.

I play guitar, and have played in several bands....mostly hardcore though since I'm not a very "metal" guy per se; no long hair etc. I also did some rapping in another band, so I'm pretty open to different music.

Actually I'm mostly into hardcore and hip-hop. And alot of metal too

Yeah, I know Abigail Williams. They aren't bad, they just don't measure up to many of the European and Southwest Asian bands.

Not sure if you listen to much symphonic BM, but I'd check out:

Alghazanth (Vocalist is in Swallow the Sun also)
Stormlord
Nightside Glance
Enslavement of Beauty
Dragonlord

Out of them, I'd have Enslavement of Beauty with the best overall feel to them. They have a very atmospheric sound which seems to envelop the listener. Alghazanth is probably the best to listen to if you prefer straight BM.

Yeah, I have a friend who listens to all kinds of finnish stuff so I know Alghazanth too but I´ve never really heard that much as I maybe should. There´s so much of it (finnish metal) that it´s getting pretty much generic shit

And to Foucault: Im a guitarist too (= main instrument )for good 6-7 years now, had some bandshit for a while but my friends ( don´t try to make a band with your friends!) were a bit to much interested in all other shit or just did fuckin nothing so it died. But I´m off to University and a bigger city ( The Metal Capital :D) so yeah I´ll definitely try to get to band or two.

Although I'm a huge fan of Death Metal I really can't get into Black Metal...

The fact that all bands in the genre put so much effort in their looks really break it up for me. I can't stand the whole evil clown look most black metal bands have, and the fact that sometimes it seems good music are not a black metal band's main priority, but looking and sounding "evil".

All this animal killing, blood and other crap are just something to make up for shitty music. You don't see a real band like Opeth having to do any of that to be worshiped.

That been said I'll check some of these bands out - I'm pretty sure there can be some hidden jewels in the genre I'm yet to find out.

Mork Gryning are pretty cool, haven't heard that name in years. Thanks for bringing them up again!

What about Vintersorg?

I never payed much attention to Vintersorg. Somebody told me to check them out, but I never got around to it because I was put off by the sound of bands like Immortal actually.

I like Ved Buens Ende and Forgotten Woods at the moment. I think France is also maybe a rival for Norway's dominance of the scene now as well, seeing as most of the original Norwegian bands have changed so much.

Cool list, although aren't Endstille NSBM? It maybe they just use that marduk style imagery, I dunno. Give SVEST a go if you havent already.

Also, thanks to OP for linking Ragnarok, I haven't actually heard them until now. HATE gorgoroth though, but i'm an elitist little shit so whatever.

Also also, make blog posts about Structuralist philosophy instead of metal for more cool points (sorry if your name has no relation to Michel)

Not their EP. Their recent release is. It's not bad, but there are much better symp BM bands.

haha, Endstille aren't NSBM, it's a common misconception. They don't support racism or anything like that, but they do like creating songs about WW2. ;p

bathory is barely black metal in its early form, really nothing attractive about them besides the fact that they are considered to be "the originators"
you would be the first person to name bathory in his top 3 BM list( it doesnt even make sense honestly)
burzum was the essence of black to me, much more then mayhem

ive noticed you are fairly knowledgeable in this area, my reply here was a first impression
im still positive you went on a stretch to post these bands that have 2-3 releases total
ive never heard of half of them, i had to look them up and what do you know, seems unknown to me
id be surprised if some of them had 500 listeners total
so even though i somewhat changed my opinion about you i still think it wouldnt hurt including something like Ulver, Taake or Wyrd just to seem realistic..

I wouldn't say that about people who have favorite bands that aren't known at all or very little.

For example, some of my favorite Melodic Death Bands aren't that well known.

Noumena
Omnium Gatherum
Mark:Black
Skyfire
Callenish Circle
Raintime

Sure, I could say Kalmah, Insomnium, Dark Tranquillity, Early In Flames, Darkest Hour, etc. but then I would be lying to myself.

I hope someone will sign Mark:Black ASAP, they fucking kick ass. Listen to their 3 songs they put up (Their album is complete just need to find a label)

That been said I'll check some of these bands out - I'm pretty sure there can be some hidden jewels in the genre I'm yet to find out.

Why would you compare Opeth and black metal? They haven't ever released anything remotely black metal...maaaayybee their first two albums take influence a bit, but nowadays? They're nothing close.

Opeth is a great band, and they're my favorite next to Dream Theater, but bringing them into a black metal discussion is fucking stupid.

cradle of filth is not black metal ffs.

gorgoroth is just the most overrated ever. and gaahl is just trying to hard to be "scary." ( anyone seen his interview on the movie "metal a headbanger's journey"/)
all he does is pretends to be scary and throughout the interview he goes ........*sips wine*.........."satan"

i'm surprising no one has mentioned bathory like after 2 pages. Quorthon was one of the most respectable figures in black metal. wasn't a sell out like shagrath.

@food, bathory is EVERYTHING that defines black metal in its early form.

The albums from the self titled "bathory" to "blood fire death" pretty much helped the black metal scene evolve. the raspy vocals, rawness of the drums and the riffs

They're the best band from Australia by far. Their guitarist is quite good and the vocals compliment the band very well. I prefer their full album to their new EP, though it's close.

I'd say Emperor were more influential than Bathory even though Bathory influenced the original BM bands.

Anyways, if this was the case Deep Purple would keep coming up time and time again as "one of the best" since they were one of the most influential bands in the beginning on the whole of metal.

Deep Purple was one of if not the most influential band on the WHOLE of metal. It influenced some of the first waves of metal like Thrash (Notably was the major influence on Metallica).

Deep Purple was also a major influence on bands like Venom (Who along with Bathory were the pioneers of the to come Black Metal scene) and Hellhammer.

Without Deep Purple there might not be a Thrash, Black Metal, or Death Metal scene since they are the ORIGINAL influence on METAL (This encompasses all genres of metal).

Ugh. Don't you get it. Without Deep Purple there might not have been a VENOM. They were the major influence on Venom.

Here, I'll break this down.

Deep Purple
|
/ \
BM Thrash
| \
BM SubG. DM

In other words, without Deep Purple to influence the beginning of Metal (That is Heavy Metal, Thrash, and Black Metal) those genres that popped up (The aforementioned) might not have come into existence (Or at least not for a great while) therefore those genres would not have had the bands to influence the later genres like Death Metal, Folk/Pagan, Melodic Death, Power, etc.

It's called branching. If you went back in time and killed Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and there was no more Ozzy or Ritchie Blackmoore how do you think the Metal scene would have evolved? Those two bands are the most influential bands in the history of METAL because they are the ORIGINAL bands.

Comprehend please ;/

Ugh. Don't you get it. Without Deep Purple there might not have been a VENOM. They were the major influence on Venom.

Here, I'll break this down.

Comprehend please ;/

so lets talk about jazz, blues, and rock and roll too! Wait what about tribal music or classical music, I guess we wouldn't have black metal with those!

Oh, and you're wrong

haha, so true.

lets keep it to the bands that started out as black metal or actually influenced black metal.

no need to drag the beginning of sound into this.

lol you just dont get it
everyone knows about bathory. Its not something that BM listener would listen to. As a history lesson, sure, i still have 2-3 albums. As something on a regular basis? Hed have to be retarded. Bathory relates to BM almost as much as Black Sabbath, it simply wasnt black. W/e you babble about respect, its a meaningless information. We all know the origins here, thanks for input

wat.

The first few albums sure you could definitely argue about them being simply origins and more influencial than good compared to some stuff now (I disagree, but w.e) but Blood Fire Death is still one of the best BM albums out there.

Black metal.

However they started incorporating symphonic arrangements into their music early on and later on industrial influences, which makes them not so "true" in some peoples eyes.

You mean they actually started to incorporate music into otherwise unintelligible mix of growling and ear-tearing noises?

thank you, someone who GETS it.

to clarify the 1st wave: bathory, venom, hellhammer, celtic frost. these are the bands that gave rise to other black metal bands (second wave and beyond). kind of like the building blocks of future black metal, helping them define the genre and how it is supposed to be.

bullshit
argue all you want, it cant be one of the best black metal albums ever just because it wasnt black yet. Everyone knows it was prototype of black but thats it. First black metal band was Mayhem. Bathory experimented with a lot of shit and they eventually ended up doing something else. You can find many elements of black in their early releases( see you are wrong here as well, they remotely remind BM only in first 4 albums) like vocals and lyrics overall, somewhat different pace, but thats it. Dont try to make something look bigger then it was

fuck yeah, building blocks. None of it was black metal, it only supports my point. If something like venom/hellhammer belongs to the same wave that only proves that bathory was in the same category. Not black metal, but one of its originators.

Correct. Compare Emperor's Wrath of the Tyrant EP which is the quintiessential BM sound to anything Venom/Bathory/Celtic Frost/Hellhammer put out in the early 80s and later and you can tell the difference. Bathory also was more closely linked with the beginnings of Viking metal also.

Emperor - Ancient Queen

Compare to Venom Black Metal (Which is pretty much agreed the origin of the start of BM)

Honestly, if you call that BM, I scoff at you. They created the building blocks, but didn't actually play BM.

Venom didn't play BM, but Bathory did. Celtic Frost played blackened thrash, and I'm not sure what Hellhammer is.

Ugh. Bathory did not play BM.

Listen to this from 1988 and try and honestly tell me this is BM when it is Thrash with harsh vocals. They set the stage for BM, but didn't actually PLAY it. Geeze.

Now listen to one of the pioneers of BM.

Darkthrone from their 1992 album and tell me NOW that Bathory actually plays BM. Darkthrones 1992 album is pure unadultered BM. A huge feature of pure BM is the raw production and dissonant guitar. (Neither of which Bathory possess)

For me honestly, I think BM bands should steer clear of music videos its like the antithesis of the whole point to BM. I never did understand the black and white paint either. Much of the early work and lyrics of BM dealt with the occult and satanism, and they look rather silly not something to be afraid of. You just can't convey BM songs in a music video.

Anyways, thats my opinion. Its probably in the minority.
