That is a very very very good simile and I agree with it completely. The Earth is huge. There's tons of stuff for us to do during our lives. Live a good life and if there is an afterlife.. even better. I'm content with just living already though. The thought of not existing is a little scary though.

When you die, you become one with the source again, and then you pick another family to get born in.
you can imagine source like all waters in the world, they are ultimately the same thing, and you can transform one easily into another, one flows into another.
Or even better, source is the air humidity. Then you decide to come to earth a bit to experience the life here, and then you become the drop and chose a place to drop on. Then you die (you turn into humid air) and then you go all over again.
thats what I believe now, dunno if it fits any official religion..

Just remember that death is the great equalizer- everyone will have to confront it one day so try to live your life to the fullest without thinking about it so much.

I believe in ghosts and shit so to me thats proof of some sort of afterlife existence. That's about as far as I delve anymore because we just can't know.

The way i see it is that nothing exists outside of right now. (If you have read "the power of now" you will understand.) The only thing that us humans can possibly do is take everything seriously in the now, try as hard as we can in every task we do and just go with it. The future does not exist yet, and BELIEVE IT OR NOT the past does not exist either. It is all a figment of our imagination. Right now. and now. and now. those moments no longer exists but as soon as you read the word "now" in a few seconds that is reality. Now I conclude from all this present moment talk that an afterlife cannot possibly exist because it is a figment of our imagination. Humans tend to make up comfortable stories and cling to them as comfort. Once you reach a certain intelligence level you no longer need something to cling to. I think the "afterlife" is all made up by humans to make themselves feel better. We are all just a bunch of pussies. At least those who believe or hope for an afterlife.. Take everything as it is and you will be happy.

Why do you find the thought of not existing scary? Personally I think it would be a nice break from reality, I am kind of tired of losing on iccup and doing math homework

Not too long ago I'd have this problem with extreme anxiety to the point where I couldn't sleep because of the thought of "What if I were to not wake up the next morning?" After a while and some thinking it just took some acceptance that I do not comprehend things beyond my grasp.
And the only way to be content with dieing is to live life now and to make sure you can do what you feel is necessary to justify your existence.
FER REAL BITCH.
I went to sleep 2 weeks ago and didn't wake up the next morning, I slept for 28 hours. The sleep dealt terrible terrible damage to my system but in the end it doesn't even matter.

It makes me sad because I won't see what the world is like 1000 years from now.

Your not alone in not being able to sleep. Some nights I used to stay up the entire night, getting that "creeping", dreadful feeling in the bottom of my stomach that inevitably, someday, I will cease to exist. Even if scientist can make you live 9182301823019238 years, someday you will die, you cannot live forever. Eventually, the universe will either expand to infinity and all of matter will pull apart, or there will be a massive crunch. The end is inevitable. For awhile, all I was able to think about was death. Every day I would look at my family and friends, and be sad that they, inevitably, will also do nothing more than rot in the ground someday. I felt like we were all walking a straight, inevitable road towards death.
However, I comfort myself by thinking that living forever would suck really, really, hard. Eternal consciousness would mean that you would experience the same things an infinite amount of times. Eventually, everything would become tiring, repetitive, and boring. You would wish for death. Now, I do wish life was longer so that we could experience everything at least once, but that is only wishing. Now I just try to live my life as best I can and have as much fun as possible, not caring what other people think. Go for your dreams and fuck the haters.
And in a more physics sense, you are already dead in another spot on the fourth dimension. Don't worry about it. Your in a phase, and it will pass with age. Now, go play some SC and enjoy.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place. Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Yeah, but to the OP. If its any comfort I doubt any of the religions we see in existence today are even close to worshiping a real and actual god if one were to hypothetically exist. Man created god in his image and used religion as a form of control. I don't think there is much if anything truly spiritual about religion. But hey, I guess I am a cynic.
I choose to take what I see as the only logical view, Agnosticism. There are generally two forms of it. One is not believing you can proof or disproof the existence of God, which I hold as true. The other generally is the denouncing of any practicing religion as being truth. You essentially believe in a higher being, but not any of the religions around.
You could also believe a combination of the two. I have thought about God life and death for so long that I am over it now. I have come to accept that I will never have the answer until I am dead and at that point it won't matter. I don't think its likely that everything I am, everything I will be will one day fall into non existence.
Because then essentially life would be just a reprieve from nonexistence wouldn't it? If so why would we ever experience life? What decided that we should exist purely to inevitably not exist again?
I feel like Buddhism is the closest to truth than any other religion. I don't think heaven and hell could exist and the rigid rules set forth from religions like Christianity and Islam. Question faith and go to hell? Why would this supposed God give us free will then subsequently punish us for it? I am calling bullshit.
Ascending to a higher plane seems more likely. As in when you die you take a form of energy that would retain your experiences.
Basically of you TL;DR this. Place value on the one truth we can all acknowledge, life. Life is the one constant we all have and all know to be true. We all at one point live, and at another we die. So enjoy every moment of your life and make of it what you will. The only true "sin" so to speak that I believe in is wasting life. The one thing you know as truth.
If you think going to church is a good use of your life then do it. If it makes you feel better to sit in a church for 2-3 hours on a Sunday then do it. I think it is a waste of the gift of life to piss away 2-3 hours a week doing something that I DO NOT enjoy. I'd rather play some video games, or spent more time with family and friends.

Without the picking part I think this essentially refers to Buddhism/Hinduism. Reincarnation until purity? According to those religions (I am by no means an expert) I believe you have to keep achieving good in your life and then move up in classes when reincarnated. If you believe that to be true, then you were an evil asshole, and now your an Ethiopian.
Not saying Ethiopian's deserve that, I am just saying how it can be interpreted.

You don't need to make any effort. Just by not thinking about it you're already thinking right. Anything that you try to think about it is wrong. So just.. don't think about it and you already understand it better than any human possibly could!

What is very interesting about the relationship about religion and death is it provides somewhat of a safety net when a religious person ponders the subject. They believe fluffy clouds await them, and beautiful women with angel wings will feed them strawberries.
I am under the belief that when a person dies, nothing happens besides their body becoming one with the earth. However, hearing some of their explanations, I wish I could believe at times :p

If you believe that there simply is nothing afterwards, there's nothing to be afraid of. You were dead once before, and I don't recall hearing any complaints back then. It will be just as things were before your life started. Nothing. Think of it that way.
On the other hand if you're spiritual, things get way more interesting and exciting in my opinion, but more importantly, more meaningful.
