I've never really been a huge soccer fan but lately I've been watching it more with all the world cup qualifiers going on right now.

One thing I don't really understand is the reason for the offsides system in soccer. Why should an offensive player be penalized for beating his man down the field? It seems like the offsides call exists to bail out poor defenders. That would be like taking away the fastbreak in basketball.

Wikipedia says the rule was implimented to prevent teams from permanently stationing an offensive player near the opponents goal. I don't see why this would necessarily be a problem. If a team does do this, the other team can just leave a defender on him at all times, or go on the offensive with a 10-9 advantage. And while the rule does accomplish its purpose, as I said above, it's other effect is to reward sloppy defence.

Anyone agree/disagree?

I might be wrong here, but from how you worded it "penalized for beating his man down the field" it's just you can't pass to someone on your team that's beyond the opponent's last man.

Like Jumperer said people would just hoof it to the furthest man even if that guy's near the keeper.

I don't think it rewards sloppy defense because the defense is forced to keep in line and can make a so-called offside trap by lifting the line a few steps. Sloppy defense in my opinion would be to keep a player behind the line. If you had no offside rule you would get extremely spread out teams with only longballs and no cut through passes with well timed runs.

I could see it breaking down basically into two 5-on-5's as you say, but I don't think it would just be long balls back and forth. If the 5 defenders stay back to protect, their offensive players would have to run in to get the ball, and from there it would be like playing half-pitch 5v5. It would probably lead to more goals being scored, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

I think eliminating offsides would put an end to the strategy involved in playing defense, as well as turn soccer into a booting contest in which each team would just clear the ball to the group of players in front of the opponents goal.

The thing is the ball can be moved so easily in soccer that the 5 defenders guarding the net, and the 5 offensive players on the other team who are standing stationary would just create a huge cluster fuck.

Once someone had ball control, even at mid field, they would just bomb one on net and hope for deflections and headbutts etc. There would be no need to work the ball around it would just be sending the ball in. Might as well just make the game all corner kicks cuz thats what you would be watching imo lol

Yea, you're probably right. I just get annoyed when a good run gets waved off because the offensive player was too quick for his defender.

because then people will just sit at the goal and wait for someone to pass it to them so they can just tap it in. there's no excitement that way.

if you play soccer you'd know how annoying it is to have someone kind of sneak behind you and wait by the goal. those people are dicks and we call them cherrypickers.

if he was waved off it's not because he's too quick it's because he timed his run wrong or because the pass came too late.

what's annoying is when a great goal gets denied because the assisting ref has bad eye-sight

just imagine how easy it would be if you just put 6 strikers and let them roam around the opposition area and just feed them with long distance passes. its not about sloppy defense its about balance and fairness , at least thats how I see it. Also the game would be extremely boring to watch

It IS like this, in all none professional games it works like this. All players stays at the top and waits for a ball so they can score.
