Today I learned something about myself. Very often there will be a player who displays great promise and is granted the attention of so many fans because of a moment in the sun (you can tell because of the 'calm is new savior' or whatever signatures). These players are doted upon for short times and then cast aside in favor of the new one-second-hero.
I prefer the players who show promise but do not perform well. Favorite protoss? BackHo and Free. Terran? I'm one of the only HiyA fans. Zerg? Well, Calm (I was saying shit like 'new savior'... lol). Sure I like good players. Sure I bandwagon with sick newbies like Violet. Sure sure sure. The thing is the players who don't perform well are more attractive to me. There is a component of heroism that comes from being down on your luck. This facet is what really calls to me when I choose my stars.
EDIT: I guess what I'm saying is that when there is an unfavorable relationship between skill and stardom, paradoxically, a kind of tainted stardom ensues.

EDIT: Free has been strong, certainly, but his play is not consistently strong enough to garner him the attention or success of similar players (like his dragon buddies).

you should talk to Fakesteve about Sea[Shield] and his tournament results!

Interesting.
I'm quite the opposite, but I really do sympathize with those who try so hard but fall short.
|
You're totally right about Sea. He falls perfectly into the category of progamer I'm talking about.

Everyone is like that.
I love the top players just because it's endlessly entertaining and impressive to see their impeccable gameplay...but I love to follow the up-and-comers; people who will never quite be Jaedong, Flash or Bisu, but people you can support in both their ups and downs.
My favorites in that category are Stork, Jangbi, Really, Piano and Thezerg. I love their play and I love following their games...just they hardly ever fucking deliver good results (Stork has run out of steam once again, and Jangbi just hasn't been playing like he used to since losing three finals in one season...T_T ).

Stork and Jangbi don't count I'd say. They are both such successful players. The romantic aspect of the loser-star I'm talking about is that they do not achieve that success.
I am really feeling inarticulate tonight. Maybe it's general Pabst's fault.

NaDa was a bonjwa, but not anymore. I still love him.
Zerg, I like savior. He simply destroys everyone.
Protoss ~ Who could forget RainbOw? That lovable little loser-boy.

Everybody likes an underdog... though perhaps for different reasons

You love players you can identify with in some way.
I'd say that people who's favorite players are top dogs and winners are more successful in life.
